Popular culture and marketing rarely share the same realm of research. However, these theories start to influence each other, which are especially visible when compared with international marketing as the framework. In order to analyze the gap between popular culture and marketing culture, the author followed a cultural object, Domo-kun, as it entered the US market. Domo-kun gradually changed, including its marketing aesthetics, its significance, and meaning within popular culture after it entered the market. These meaning changes are through the process of commoditization, emotional value, and how they are reinterpreted within cultural frames and reference groups.展开更多

The purpose of this investigation was to prospectively examine the relationship among self-presentational concerns and pre-game affective states among middle and high school aged football players. Methods: American football players (n = 112; mean age = 15.57 years) completed a measure of self-presentational concerns (SPSQ, McGowan, et al., 2008) a week prior to the measurement of selected pre-game affective states (i.e., attentiveness, self-assurance, serenity, and fear). Results: Regression analyses revealed that concerns about appearing athletically untalented negatively contributed to the significant prediction (p 〈 0.001) of pre-game attentiveness, /3 = -0.43, Radj ^2 19.5% (p 〈 0.001), and self-assurance, /3 = -0.38, R^dj = 11.9% (p 〈 0.01). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of reducing self-presentational concerns in promoting positive pre-game mental states that likely impact the quality of athletes' competitive play and experience. The novel was strictly and prudently organized by Fitzgerald, which used lots of writing techniques and skills, such as symbolism, analogy and so on. These techniques contributed to deepen theme and increase artistic appeal. In this novel, Fitzgerald portrays the real state of American society vividly in 1920s with cold attitude and subtle analysis. This is the most typical tragicomedy about the realization and vanishment of "American dream" that describes the love tragedy between Gatsby and Daisy.展开更多

These results were then compared to xanthan gum usage. The equipment test results showed that HEC promoted proper tensile capacity in masks which are made from strong structured fabrics such as medium thick, thick and cross woven & homogenous thin mask fabrics. HEC was found to be more compatible with mask fabrics than xanthan gum. HEC improved mask softness and dampness and had an improved water binding and water retention ability compared to xanthan gum. The split face sensory evaluation results demonstrated that sheet masks containing HEC had improved adhesion and lubricity, provided more moisture to the skin, better elasticity and gloss after use and took longer to dry out. Overall, the panel preferred facial masks which contain HEC.展开更多

The author suggests that education in art contributes to evolving sensibility towards the surrounding world. The artistic knowledge or attitude helps us perceive and feel the quotidian with affection, imagination, and creativity. It functions as a complement to a rational understanding of reality. This paper retakes Aristotelian category of poiesis, considering it a creative act and delves into John Dewey's view of relations between education and art. Dewey f'mds in the aesthetic-artistic experience of the quotidian a way to engage with the other and to treat life as something with deep aesthetic sense. The discussion shown in this article follows four main threads under the scope of the Deweynian notion of art as experience, They are the education for art, education by art, education in art, and the creative act of the quotidian.展开更多

Literature and psychology has been linked together starting from Plato and Aristotle period. In the neuropsychological domain, synaesthesia allows people to combine several perceptions together; while in literature, it magically melts the “voice” of the author’s into the works. To interpret the female voice of the book, this article analyzes the voice of poverty and distress, of pursuing ethnic equality, and of pursuing female independence, on the basis of the psychological perception, synaesthesia, so as to reveal Sandra Cisneros’s feminist voice on the reflections of ethnic Mexican female values by her beautiful naive poetic language, with a pure and innocent tone.展开更多

Using Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province as a case study, we conducted questionnaires with 620 local residents and a logistic regression model to determine aesthetic perceptions and factors affecting these perceptions. We found that local residents in Nujiang hold a relatively high perception of their residential landscapes. A majority of respondents, 75.81%, believe their residential landscapes are beautiful. Eight factors were found to influence the aesthetic perception. In direct influential factors, administrative village located in the protected areas and the standard deviation of the elevation around the administrative village have positive influence; distance from administrative village to county town, the ecological environment has changed in recent years, whether tourism development has a negative impact and wish to live in the city have negative influence. In indirect influential factors, both residential house type and have a television at home have positive influence. Based on these results, we discussed relevant policy suggestions to maintain the aesthetic perceptions held by local residents of their residential landscapes and promote the protection and sustainable development of this valuable landscape in Nujiang.展开更多

In the theoretical analysis, the FBG sensor response to longitudinal US wave is investigated. The result indicates that the FBG wavelength can be modulated as static case when the grating length is much shorter than US wavelength. The experimental results of standard sinusoidal and spindle wave test agree well with the generated signal. Further research using two FBGs for realizing linear location is also achieved. The maximum linear location error is obtained as less than 5 mm. FBG-based US wave sensor and AE linear location provide useful tools for specific requirements.展开更多

In addition, whether short-term captivity influences metabolic rate re- peatability in birds is currently uninvestigated. In this study, we measured Msum (maximal cold-induced metabolic rates) in sum- mer acclimatized American goldfinches Spinus tristis directly after capture from wild populations, after approximately 2 weeks of indoor captivity (Captive 1), and again after an additional 1-2 weeks of captivity (Captive 2). M~ increased significantly (16.9%) following the initial captive period, but remained stable thereafter. Body mass (Mb) also increased significantly (9.2%) during the initial captive period but remained stable thereafter, suggesting that muscle growth and/or remodeling of body composition pro- duced the observed metabolic variation. Mb and Msum were not significantly repeatable between wild and Captive 1 birds, but were significantly repeatable between Captive 1 and Captive 2 groups. These data suggest that caution must be exercised when extrapolating metabolic rates from short-term captive to wild populations. In addition, Msum was a repeatable trait for birds under conditions where mean metabolic rates remained stable, but Msum repeatability disappeared during acclimation to conditions pro- moting phenotypically flexible metabolic responses. This suggests that the capacity for phenotypic flexibility varies among indi- viduals, and such variation could have fitness consequences展开更多

Based on surveys of the public in Canada,Mexico, and the United States, the article shows the levels of concern over climate change threats, perceived risk, knowledge of climate change policies, levels of uncertainty, and other perception factors to help understand the relationships between public perceptions and policy preferences for renewable energy. Results show national differences between the three countries in nearly all climate change perceptions, with Mexico reflecting the highest levels of concern and the United States the lowest. Mexico also shows the greatest support for renewable energy sources. However, the results show very high levels of uncertainty about climate change dimensions concerning risk, science, and knowledge and the effectiveness of policy approaches. The data demonstrate strong statistical correlations between risk perception factors and preferences for mitigation policies in the form of renewable energy policies.展开更多

ZIKV was first detected in 1947 and only 14 human infection cases were reported until 2007. This virus was previously observed to cause only mild flu-like symptoms. However, recent ZIKV infections might be responsible for the increasing cases of neurological disorders such as GuillainBarre′ syndrome and congenital defects, including newborn microcephaly. Therefore, researchers have established several animal models to study ZIKV transmission and pathogenesis, and test therapeutic candidates. This review mainly summarizes the reported animal models of ZIKV infection, including mice and non-human primates.展开更多
