A Forest Fire Risk Assessment Using ASTER Images in Peninsular Malaysia

Based on the physical concept of heat energy of pre-ignition,a new fire susceptibility index (FSI) is used to estimate forest fire risk. This physical basis allows calculation of ignition probabilities and comparisons of fire risk across eco-regions. The computation of the index requires inputs of fuel temperature and fuel moisture content (FMC),both of which can be estimated using remote sensing data. While ASTER data for land surface temperatures (LST) was used as proxys for fuel temperatures,fuel moisture content is estimated by regression technique utilizing the ratio NDVI/LST of ASTER data. FSIs are computed in peninsular Malaysia for nine days before the fires of 2004 and 2005 and validated with fire occurrence data. Results show that the FSI increases as the day approaches the fire day. This trend can be observed clearly about four days before the day of fire. It suggests that FSI can be a good estimator of fire risk. The physical basis provides a more meaningful FSI,allows calculation of ignition probabilities and facilitates the development of a future class of fire risk models. FSI can be used to compare fire risk across different eco-regions and time periods. FSI retains the flexibility to be localized to a vegetation type or eco-regions for improved performance.

Motivations and performance of public to private transactions： An international study

This article deals with the motivations and the different sources of value from public to private transactions in Europe, USA and Asia from 2000 to 2007. We determine eight main motivations （tax savings, incentive realignment, control, free cash flow, growth of prospects, transaction costs, takeover defence and undervaluation）. Then, we evaluate the shareholder wealth by measuring the offered premiums and the CAAR （cumulative average abnormal return）. Finally, we analyse the impact of public to private to the wealth shareholder. The main sources for firms from going private are incentive realignment, free cash flow （mostly for Asia）, the economy of cost transaction and undervaluation. Furthermore, taxation benefit is a source of wealth effects for Asia and family blockholder （for the control hypothesis） is significant for Europe. Premiums and CAAR are the most important for the USA and Asia. The main observation that we have made is that Asia gets the same behavior as the USA.

Analysis of the Energy Embodied in Foreign Goods Trade of China

In recent years,scientists have been increasingly interested in the energy embodied in traded goods among countries.In this article,the direct energy intensities in various economic sectors of China were calculated with the data of energy consumption and output value of each sector,and the input-output table was used to estimate the external energy consumption.The total energy intensity of all sectors was then obtained.From the data of international trade,the energy embodied in goods trade of China was estimated for the period of 1994-2001.During this period,the average energy intensity of imported goods was always higher than that of exported ones.As a country with a surplus in international goods trade,China actually imported net embodied energy in the past few years.The net embodied energy imported was at the same magnitude of the imported energy in the form of fossil fuels.

Clinical research of biphenotypic acute leukemia witht(8;21)(q22;q22)

Objective:To report 4 cases of biphenotypic acute leukemia(BAL)with t(8;21)(q22;q22),and analyze the characteristics of morphology,immune phenotype,chromosome karyotype(MIC)and clinical manifestations.Methods:The BAL patients with t(8;21)(q22;q22)(group A)were compared with the randomly selected BAL patients with other clonical chromo- somal changes(group B)and acute myeloid leukemia M2 cases with t(8;21)(q22;q22)(group C)in MIC and clinical features. Results:BAL with t(8;21)(q22;q22)showed acute myeloid leukemia with high percentages of blast cells morphologically; revealed co-positive to B-lymphoid and myeloid lineages,frequent and high expressions of CD34 and CD33;were responsive to chemotherapy for myeloid and lymphocytic leukemia simultaneously well.Conclusion:A new subset of BAL with t(8;21)(q22;q22)was reported,and this suggests that the leukemia colony with t(8;21)(q22;q22)might originate from early phase of hematopoiesis.

Facile Synthesis of Micro/Nano Binary Dendritic Gold Structures for SERS and Superhydrophobic Applications

Via a galvanic displacement reaction, well-defined micro/nano binary dendritic gold structures were prepared on silicon wafers in fluoride acid solution containing HAuCI4 at 50 ℃. The gold deposits were characterized with scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy-dispersive X-ray （EDX） spectrum and X-ray diffraction （XRD）. The investigation of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） reveals that the film of gold dendrites was an excellent substrate with significant enhancement effect. Also, the gold dendritic structured surface exhibited a remarkable superhydrophobic property with a contact angle of approximately 165° and low contact angle hysteresis after further simple surface modification with n-dodecanethiol.

Embodied Pollution in China-U.S.Trade——An Empirical Study Based on Estimation of Input-Output Technology Matrix

Using input-output tables of China and the U.S., this paper has calculated the pollution embodied in trade and structure of pollution, the balance of emissions embodied in trade （BEET） and the pollution terms of trade （PTT） for 18 manufacturing sectors of China and the US. between 2001 and 2010. The calculation aims to verify whether China has become a ＂pollution haven＂ in bilateral trade with developed countries represented by the U.S., and whether Chinese exports are ＂dirtier＂ compared with imports from the U.S., and further conducting an industry structure analysis and effect decomposition study on pollution embodied in trade in industrial goods between China and U.S.. Result of our research indicates that according to our calculation of the BEET, China remains a country with environmental deficits in bilateral trade with the U.S. while the gaps between pollution embodied in China＇s export and import are narrowing. Pollution embodied in China＇s export has the tendency of increase before decline while pollution embodied in import demonstrates no significant tendency of decline. Through effect decomposition, we further found that the effect of technology arising from the substantial decline of pollution intensity effectively lowered pollution embodied in export and narrowed the environmental deficits of China in its bilateral trade. The effect of scale arising from growing export volumes significantly increased China＇s environmental deficits while the structural effect arising from changes in the structure of import and export is insignificant in reducing environmental deficits. Our calculation of the PTT led to the finding that China＇s export goods are more pollution intensive compared with import goods and that the structure of US exports to China is cleaner than the structure of Chinese exports to the US., which requires further improvements of China＇s import and export structure.

Overexpression and export of Vibrio anguillarum metalloprotease in Escherichia coil

Vibrio anguillarum metalloprotease, an extracellular zinc metalloprotease involved in the virulence mechanism of Vibrio anguillarum, is synthesized from the empA gene as a 611-residue precursor and naturally secreted via Sec secretion pathway in Vibrio anguillarum. In this study, hetemlogous expression of the empA gene encoding metallopmtease and export of the recombinant metallopmtease in Escherichia coli were examined. The empA gene was subcloned into pBAD24 with arabinose promoter and sequenced. The sequence encoded a polypeptide （611 amino acids） consisting of four domains： a signal peptide, an Nterminal pmpoptide, a mature region and a C-terminal pmpoptide. The empA gene inserted in plasmid pBAD24 was overexpressed in TOP10 strain of E. coli after arabinose induction. The 36kDa polypeptide of the recombinant metallopmtease as the mature pmtease was further confirmed by SDS-PAGE and im- munoblotting. It was found that recombinant metallopmtease with the EmpA activity and antigenicity was exported into the poriplasm of Escherichia coli cells via Sec translocation pathway, whereas it was secreted into extracellular environments in V. anguillarum. The results imply that the expression, export and processing mechanism of the protein in E. coli are similar to those in V. anguillarum.

Grinding Characteristics Of Directionally Aligned SiC Whisker Wheel - Comparison With A12O3 Fiber Wheel

A unique SiC whisker wheel was invented,in which the whiskers were aligned normally to the grinding wheel surface.In this paper,grindabilities of the SiC whisker wheel are investigated and compared with those of other wheels of SiC grains,Al2O3 grains,as well as Al2O3 long and short fibres which were also aligned normally to the grinding wheel surface,respectively.The main research contents concern grinding characteristics of a directionally aligned SiC whisker wheel such as material-removal volume,wheel-wear rates,integrity of the ground surfaces,grinding ratios and grinding efficiency.Furthermore,grinding wheels of whiskers and fibres have a common disadvantage:they tend to load easily.The authors have proposed a simple method of loading-free grinding to overcome this propensity and investigate some related grinding characteristics under loading-free grinding conditions.

Trends and Features of China's Inter-Provincial Trade:1987-2007

With today's economic globalization,inter-provincial trade plays an important role in a country's economy.This paper is the first to adopt the input-output tables of 30 Chinese provinces and to summarize the evolution of China's inter-provincial trade from1987 to 2007.This paper reaches the following conclusions.First,China's inter-provincial trade has sustained a period of rapid growth.In 2007,the total volume of inter-provincial trade was twice the amount of international trade,with the eastern region accounting for the majority of the inter-provincial trade volume.GDP may have a greater effect on interprovincial trade than geographic distance does.Second,inter-provincial trade maintains a high level of concentration and overlaps with the high concentration of GDP.Third,the inter-provincial trade dependence of Chinese provinces tends to increase,an indication of the growing domestic market integration.Moreover,the eastern region's dependence on inter-provincial trade is higher than the central and western regions'.Fourth,the share of inter-provincial trade in the overall external trade of Chinese provinces has a declining tendency,which indicates a slower process of China's domestic market integration compared with international market integration.However,in terms of proportion,the external trade of most Chinese provinces is still dominated by inter-provincial trade.Fifth,most provinces with longstanding inter-provincial trade deficits are in the central and western regions.

On Camassa-Holm Equation with Self-Consistent Sources and Its Solutions

Regarded as the integrable generalization of Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, the CH equation with selfconsistent sources (CHESCS) is derived. The Lax representation of the CHESCS is presented. The conservation laws for CHESCS are constructed. The peakon solution, N-soliton, N-cuspon, N-positon, and N-negaton solutions of CHESCS are obtained by using Darboux transformation and the method of variation of constants.

Full-Goodwill Method of Accounting for Business Combinations and Quality of Financial Statements

Accounting goodwill arises as a result of business combinations and appears in a consolidated balance sheet of an acquirer. It is an intangible asset which reflects an excess of value of an acquired business as a whole over a summed value of its identifiable net assets. Since 2010, the International Financial Reporting Standards （IFRS） allow for two alternative methods of measuring goodwill in those business combinations, where an acquirer obtains a control over a target company without obtaining 100% share in its shareholder＇s equity. Under one of these methods, which is called a ＂full-goodwill method＂, the goodwill attributable to non-controlling interests in subsidiary is measured at fair value. Thus, the main accounting problem with this method lies in its requirement to estimate the fair value of non-controlling interests. This paper suggests that the ＂full-goodwill method＂ may sacrifice financial statement reliability for its alleged relevance, with significant potential for ＂creative accounting＂. The problems with reliability and transparency of financial statements, when ＂full-goodwill method＂ is applied, are illustrated by a real-life example of the takeover of Formula Systems Ltd. by Asseco Group （one of the biggest IT companies in Europe, listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange）.

Financial Statement Comparability： Empirical Evidence From Brazil

The convergence of accounting standards started in the 1970s, with international norms issued by the International Accounting Standards Board （IASB） and with the efforts of various countries to adopt the International Financial Reporting Standards （IFRS）, already mandatory in Brazil since 2010. Thus, comparable accounting information is clearly important, and this study plans to confirm the level of comparability of net income and equity of companies in the financial sector （in Brazil, ＂Finance and Others＂）, listed in the stock exchange, futures, and commodities （BM＆F Bovespal）, issued according to Brazilian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles （BR GAAP） and the IFRS. This study is descriptive, using a quantitative approach. Data were collected from secondary sources, more specifically, from the explanatory notes in the financial statements of the companies listed in the financial sector of the BM＆F Bovespa in the fiscal year of 2010. The results showed a reasonable level of comparability, with 68% of the companies presenting materially comparable information for net income and 72% of them for equity. However, decisions made based on data issued following the two different standards may have suffered the influence of asymmetric information; in other words, the comparability of information did not seem to satisfy those companies during the studied period of time. The main limitations of this study were data collection and selection for the development of the research because of： （1） inconsistence in net income and equity reconciliation criteria in the companies investigated; and （2） lack of uniformity in designating the adjustments that affect net income and equity in the conversion of the BR GAAP standard into the IFRS.

A preliminary study of the Six-Item Screener in detecting cognitive impairment

Objective The present retrospective study was to explore the clinical value of Six-Item Screener （SIS）, which is constituted by 6 items from mini-mental status examination （MMSE）, to identify cognitive impairment. Methods A total number of 1976 patients aged over 50 years, from the Memory Clinic of Huashan Hospital were employed in a battery of neuropsychological tests including MMSE. Subjects with severe conditions, unable to cooperate, or having been previously enrolled, were excluded from this study. The employed subjects were divided into 3 groups： subjective memory complaints （SMCs） （475 cases）, patients with mild cognitive impairment （MCI） （440 cases）, and patients with Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） （1061 cases, including 555 mild, 339 moderate, and 167 severe）. A total score of MMSE and a score of SIS composed of date, month, year, three-word delayed recall from MMSE were calculated. Data were analyzed based on educational background. Results The cut-off of SIS score was 〈 2 for illiterate, 〈 3 for elementary, and 〈 4 for junior high school or above. The sensitivity and specificity of SIS for detecting mild AD were 88.5% and 78.3%, respectively, with an overall accuracy of 83.8%, while for detecting MCI, the sensitivity and specificity were 34.3% and 90.1%, respectively, with an overall accuracy of 63.2%. Conclusion SIS is an effective and reliable instrument for dementia detection in outpatient department. However, it has limited value for MCI identification.

Nanomagnetic CoPt truncated octahedrons:facile synthesis,superior electrocatalytic activity and stability for methanol oxidation

Nanomagnetic CoPt truncated octahedral nanoparticles （TONPs） were successfully synthesised through a facile one-pot strategy. These single crystal CoPt TONPs with an average size of about 8 nm exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performance of both activity and stability for methanol oxidation reaction （MOR）. The mass and specific activities of CoPt TONPs is 8 and 6 times higher than that of standard commercial Pt/C, respectively. After accelerated durability test （ADT）, the loss of electrochemical surface area （ECSA） for CoPt TONPs is only 18.5%, which is significantly less than that of commercial Pt/C （68.2%）, indicating that CoPt TONPs possess much better stability than commercial Pt/C in the prolonged operation. The Curie temperature of CoPt TONPs down to 8 nm is as high as 350 K with weak ferromagntism at room temperature （RT）, which is greatly valuable for recycling in the eletrocatalytic applications.

Fine-control-valve of halide perovskite single crystal quality for high performance X-ray detection

Halide perovskite single crystals(HPSCs)provide a unique platform to study the optoelectronic properties of such emerging semiconductor materials,while the temperature induced crystal growth method often has an increased solute integration speed and/or unavoidable solute consumption,resulting in a soaring or slumping crystal growth rate of HPSCs.Here,we developed a universal and facile solvent-vola tilization-limited-growth(SVG)strategy to finely control the crystal growth rate by the fine-control-valve for high quality crystal grown through solution processes.The grown HPSCs by SVG method exhibited a record low trap density of 2.8×10^(8)cm^(-3)and a high charge carrier mobility-lifetime product(μτproduct)of 0.021 cm2/V,indicating the excellent crystal quality.The crystal surface defects were further passivated by oxygen suppliers as Lewis base,which led to a reduction of surface leakage current by two times when using for low dose rate X-ray detection.Such HPSC X-ray detector displayed a high sensitivity of 1274μC/(Gyair cm^(2))with a lowest detectable dose rate of 0.56μGyair/s under 120 keV hard X-ray.Further applications including alloy composition analysis and metal flaw detection by HPSC detectors were also demonstrated,which not only shows the bright future for product quality inspection and non-destructive materials analysis,but also paves the way for growing high quality single crystals and fabricating polycrystalline films.
