Theresult of comprehensive analysis shows that constraining factors to sustainable utilization of waterresources in China are complicated, including physical geographical factors and socio-economicfactors, such as uneven distribution of water resources at temporal and spatial scales, inappropriate institutional arrangement and non-water-saving and non-wter-conservation productionand life mode. The countermeasures against constraining factors to water resources sustainabledevelopment are put forward as follows: 1) using wetlands and forests, and through spatialconversion to realize temporally sustainable supply of water resources; 2) transferring waterbetween basins and areas and developing various water resources in water shortage area; 3)establishing water-saving society; 4) strengthening water pollution control and water resourcesprotection; and 5) establishing unified water resources management mechanism.展开更多

Since that time, socio economic development in Miyun Area has been slowing due to the restriction of severe environmental standards. More and more attention from the public and government has been paid to the regional sustainable development. And an effective planning for the local society management system is urgently desired. In this study, a regional sustainable development system dynamics model, named MiyunSD, is developed for supporting this planning task. MiyunSD consists of dynamic simulation models that explicitly consider information feedback that governs interactions in the system. Such models are capable of simulating the system′s behavior and predicting its developing situation of the future. For the study case, interactions among a number of system components within a time frame of fifteen years are examined dynamically. Three planning alternatives are carefully considered. The base run is based on an assumption that the existing pattern of human activities will prevail in the entire planning horizon, and the other alternatives are based on previous and present planning studies. The different alternatives will get different system′s environmental and socio economic results. Through analyzing these dynamic results, local authorities may find an optimal way to realize the objectives that the regional environment will be well protected and at the same time the economy will be rapidly developed.展开更多

The model was calibrated and validated against the historical monitored data from 2005 to 2009. The streamflow was estimated by downscaling HadCM3 outputs to the daily mean temperature and precipitation series, derived for three 30-year time slices, 2020s, 2050s and 2080s. Results suggest that daily mean temperature increases with a changing rate of 0.435~C per decade, and precipitation decreases with a changing rate of 0.761 mm per decade. Compared with other seasons, the precipitation in summer shows significant downward trend, while a significant upward trend in autumn. The annual streamflow demonstrates a general down-ward trend with a decreasing rate of 0.405 m^3/s per decade. The streamflow shows significant downward and upward trends in summer and in autumn, respectively. The decreasing rate of streamflow in summer reaches 1.97 m^3/s per decade, which contributes primarily to the decrease of streamflow. The results of this work would be of great benifit to the design of economic and social development planning in the study area.展开更多

Today, younger generation is more attached to technology, immerging it mostly for social purposes. Therefore, the importance of its existence cannot be ignored. For that, it is the time for every mentor to apply technology to education. Instructors from different majors need to realize that integrating technology into education is a powerful tool that helps them moderate their course, but never a replacement to their existence. This paper's interest is to deliver a personal experience to other instructors on how to correctly use technology for educational purposes. One way of clarifying this point is to shed light on a very common social application that is WhatsApp. It is a social application available on every smartphone that is usually used as a social medium among users from different generation. This paper used WhatsApp as an application that can associate technology with leaming and teachers' moderation and collaboration under one roof, and that is by applying Mobile learning. One main question to rise at this point is whether students are going to be collaborative or not with their teacher in applying technology into education. There will be an anticipated approach from this paper on both Mobile learning and WhatsApp, that is to reach an agreement that Mobile learning is essential and adds value to the educational material we have in hand. Great examples from my own data are going to be presented to encourage others to predict new ways that can be added to my effort and others as well. The result hoped for after this paper is to be able to answer any digital immigrants' questions and help them to be more confident with technology.展开更多

The agricultural pattern and social and demographic status in the upper basin of the Dulung Nala Stream (a tributary of the Subarnarekha River) in the western part of the State of West Bengal, India, reveals growing demand of water in the basin. The paper reports different management plans involving different types of water harvesting structures (and associated different types of water distribution systems) and different crop combinations and with benefit/cost ratios varying from 1.3 to 11.2 for the basin. The study points out that the judicious choice of both the water harvesting structure as well as the water distribution system is important. Proper planning of crop pattern is also to be emphasized for reaping maximum benefit. It further emphasizes that cost- benefit ratio cannot solely govern the choice of structure and that maximum utilization of catchmental water and thus enhancement of agricultural output (and also economic return from the catchment) i.e. quantum of benefit is also important. The water harvesting structures proposed in this study can be implemented in other semi-arid regions of India having almost the same climatic and socio-economic conditions.展开更多

Previous studies support relationships between exposures to marketing communications on alcohol consumption. This study proposed to examine influence of exposure to social media and drinking intention. Participants comprised of 2,565 students grade 4th-12th from randomly selected 11 provinces across Thailand. Drinking intention was at moderate level for students who ever drink (mean = 3.66, SD = 1.06), low level among never drink (mean = 2.43, SD = .81), and overall students (mean = 2.85, SD = 1.08). The ever drink group were moderately communicated through Facebook (mean = 3.17, SD = 1.56) and Line (mean = 2.53, SD = 1.58). Regression analysis revealed weak but significant relationship of social media that explain 1.3%-5.2% of drinking intention among Thai students. Therefore, more study is needed to effectively understand and regulate the use of social media and prevention or delaying youth from using alcohol.展开更多

Previous studies have revealed high levels of contamination. The origin of which can be attributed to geochemical processes, combustion of fossil fuels, mining and anthropogenic activities. Most borehole water and well water in local communities of Nigeria are not safe for drinking due to heavy industrial and environmental pollution. This study was undertaken to assess the quality in some selected boreholes in the Port Harcourt metropolis for a period of two years. Borehole water samples were randomly collected from thirteen boreholes in a local community in plastic bottles (100 mL) in the months of September for the years of study (2010 & 2011). Four out of the seven heavy metals analyzed were found to be present in the first year of study. These were Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn. In the second year of study, Pb, Cr, Fe and Co were not detected in all of the samples except Cu and Fe which were present in only two samples. Mn and Zn were found to be present in all of the samples for both years of study.展开更多

The major function oriented zoning plays a role in spatial coordination mainly' by spatial guidance and restriction, so. the proposal of major function oriented zoning gives a new train of thought to generate a coordination evaluation of economy-society and the resource-environment system, From the view of major function oriented zoning that considers resource environmental bearing capacity, existing development density and development potential, this paper constructs an index system and model of coordination evahtation with a case study on Pearl River Delta. The results have shown: (I) It can reveal the conflicts of economic-social development and resource-environment quality to ac- curately consider resource environmental bearing capacity, existing development densio~ and development po- tential; (2) The coordination degree between social-economy system and resource-environment system in Pearl River Delta continued to decline in the past 10 years. Level 3 fair value measurements are inappropriate for areas (called "Level 4" by the author) in which models are not formulated and that have material uncertainty in measurement. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate "measurement uncertainty", which impacts "faithful representation" in fair value measurement, from the perspective of "verifiability". To do so, it will employ a conceptual examination of the limits of Level 3 fair value measurement based on IFRS 13 (Fair Value Measurement). While taking into consideration recent discussions on reviewing conceptual framework, the author will reorganize the conceptual categories of verifiability (i.e., clarification of the "reasonable verifiability" categories) to underpin the fact that material uncertainties in measurement have obstructed constructing faithful representation. In addition, the author will discuss the problem that the dichotomy of direct and indirect found in IASB is not accurate enough to fully understand the concept of verifiability. In this context, the author will also suggest that the concept of verifiability, reorganized through "reasonable verifiability", can satisfy the requirements for constructing faithful representation.展开更多

The study aimed at assessing challenges observed during implementation of PIM approach for food security in semi-arid areas of Tanzania. Data were collected through questionnaire, participatory rapid appraisal (PRA) tools, key informants interview, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), observation and literature review. Data collected from questionnaire were analyzed using SPSS. Data fi'om other methods were analyzed using content analysis. The study revealed that PIM approach has contribution in improving food security at household level due to involvement of communities in water management activities and decision making, which enhanced availability of irrigation water and increased crop production. However, there were challenges observed during implementation of the approach, including the minimum participation of beneficiaries in decision making during planning and designing stages, which means that inadequate devolution of power among scheme owners, inadequate and lack of transparency on income expenditure in water utilization associations (WUAs), water conflict among WUAs members, conflict between farmers and livestock keepers and conflict between WUAs and village government leaders regarding training opportunities and status. The rules and regulation of WUAs were not legally recognized by the national courts and few farmers who planted trees around water sources. However, it was realized that some of the mentioned challenges were rectified by farmers themselves and facilitated by government officials. The study recommends that the identified challenges need to be rectified for farmers to realize more on the importance of PIM approach as it was realized in other Asian countries.展开更多

It has two main pillars: measuring and declaring the costs that result from the activities of companies, especially industrial companies because they affect the environment. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate how well industrial companies are committed to measuring their environmental duties and declaring them in their balance sheets. This topic will be developed over two parts: scientific basis of environmental costs and accounting; environmental measuring and disclosure.展开更多

The likely warmer climate induced by the climate change is set to alter hydrological cycle and the shifting pattern of the rainfall would affect the spatial and temporal distribution of runoff, soil moisture, and surface and groundwater reserves. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess the impacts of climate change on water and devise adaptation measures including management structures and processes by which one can deal with this challenge. The paper highlights with the global overview of climate change impacts on water in the arid region, supported and substantiated through scientific evidence drawn from IPCC reports and other relevant documents. This paper provides an overview of water resource management challenges including transboundary geopolitical concerns documented across the world and emphasizes the importance of an integrated framework for adaptive policy making. Further, it examines the viable water resource management options for various sectors and regions and showcases some of the international best practices in adaptation and mitigation. The paper also explains the complementary role of traditional knowledge in coping with climate change risks and uncertainties and the need for a balanced view in designing adaptation and mitigation strategies.展开更多

The empirical analysis, conducted on a sample of 192 Canadian companies, generally shows the importance of board characteristics in determining the level of disclosure and firms' costs of financing. In particular, the results found indicate that boards whose characteristics meet the governance requirements that are associated with greater transparency in disclosure on governance attributes reduce the costs of financing of their companies by debt as well as by equity capital.展开更多

Farmers are expert in local biophysical and socio-economic situations and can contribute in developing pragmatic indicators of agro-environmental development. During evaluation of an agricultural research project in Yunnan, China, local farmers were capable of evaluating the effects of modified technologies on existing cropping systems and discussed their attitudes to the interventions using their own indicators. Farmers' response can be grouped into seven major aspects: i) effects on income, ii) effects on production resources, iii) effects on crop management, iv) existing local knowledge about the technology, v) availability of inputs, vi) access to information, and vii) socio-economic conditions of farming households. Farmers concluded that environmental conditions in the experimental catchment in comparison to an adjacent untreated catchment were better in terms of soil and water losses, vegetation cover and natural resources, infrastructures and catchment management, use of environmentally-friendly technologies, and crop productivity. Success in soil and water conservation programmes depends on the efforts of the farmers and other local users and their greater involvement helps to identify more pragmatic indicators. Furthermore, it increases ownership of the programme, enhances interactions with the project scientists, increases farmers' awareness of ago-environmental problems and their possible consequences. These development will enable scientists to develop better targeted interventions and increase the likelihood of adoption of tested technologies by local communities. The use of paired adjacent catchments improved evaluation activities and is proposed as good practice for future catchment improvement programmes.展开更多

文摘Presently concepts and methods related to water resources conservation of mountain rivers are seriously insufficient, and its level is far from being adaptable to the development of a harmonious society. As mountain ecosystems play a key role in water resources conservation of mountain rivers, and the characteristics of mountain ecosystems and hydrologic features of mountain river follow strong temporal and spatial distribution, partition theory can be applied to the water resources conservation of mountain river. This theory observes the following partition principles:regional relativity, spatial continuity, integralcounty, meeting management needs, hierarchical principle, and comparability principle. And it lays equal emphasis on both water resources conservation and environmental protection,on both water quality conservation and water quantity protection,on the combination of water features, water cycle and water pollution. In the partition methods, index method and map superposition method will be applied in region partition. The example of region partition of water resources conservation in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River shows that the partition theory is practicable in water resources conservation of mountain rivers, and it provides a platform for future study in water resources conservation.

文摘Based on the maximum flux principle(MFP),a water quality evaluation model for surface water ecosystem is presented by using self-organization map(SOM) neural network simulation algorithm from the aspect of systematic structural evolution. This evaluation model is applied to the case of surface water ecosystem in Xindu District of Chengdu City in China. The values reflecting the water quality of five cross-sections of the system at different developing stages are obtained, with stable values of 1.438,2.952,1.86...
文摘Participatory irrigation management (PIM) is theoretically assumed to reduce poverty significantly, but its practical experience and challenges are yet researched and documented in Tanzania. The study recommends that the identified challenges need to be rectified for farmers to realize more on the importance of PIM approach as it was realized in other Asian countries.
文摘Accounting, being an integrated information system, is not merely influenced by its environment, but also affects environment as well, due to its crucial role in generating the necessary information to decision-makers. It has two main pillars: measuring and declaring the costs that result from the activities of companies, especially industrial companies because they affect the environment. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate how well industrial companies are committed to measuring their environmental duties and declaring them in their balance sheets. This topic will be developed over two parts: scientific basis of environmental costs and accounting; environmental measuring and disclosure.
文摘Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlighted the complex linkages between climate change and water. The paper also explains the complementary role of traditional knowledge in coping with climate change risks and uncertainties and the need for a balanced view in designing adaptation and mitigation strategies.
文摘The purpose of this article is to analyze the impact of corporate governance and disclosure policy on corporate financial performance by examining the combined effect of board characteristics and disclosure level on financing costs. The empirical analysis, conducted on a sample of 192 Canadian companies, generally shows the importance of board characteristics in determining the level of disclosure and firms' costs of financing. In particular, the results found indicate that boards whose characteristics meet the governance requirements that are associated with greater transparency in disclosure on governance attributes reduce the costs of financing of their companies by debt as well as by equity capital.

文摘Diversity in the biophysical and socio-economic attributes of agricultural systems makes them uniquely niche based. The use of paired adjacent catchments improved evaluation activities and is proposed as good practice for future catchment improvement programmes.
