Physical testing of large-scale ship models at sea is a new experimental method.It is a cheap and reliable way to research the environment adaptability of a ship in complex and extreme wave conditions.It is necessary to have a stable experimental system for the test.Since the experimental area is large, a remote control system and a telemetry system are essential, and were designed by the authors.An experiment was conducted on the Songhuajiang River to test the systems.The relationship between the model's speed and its electromotor's revolutions was also measured during the model test.The results showed that the two systems make it possible to carry out large-scale model tests at sea. 展开更多

When new types of hydrate chemical inhibitor (such as hydrate anti-agglomerant) are used in offshore fields, some difficulties will be encountered in the pipe transportation processing design. In view of these difficulties, a horizontal flow experiment pipe loop of transparent polypropylene pipe (25.4 mm inner diameter, 20 m long) was constructed, and some experiments were conducted. The working fluids were the mixed paraffin hydrocarbons, water and condensate oil mixtures obtained from offshore oil field. Analyzing the experimental results and adopting relevant theories of liquid-solid two-phase flow, the computational method of hydrate slurry transportation in pipe was developed. For the operating conditions of a certain multiphase pipeline, by using OLGA software, this method can be used to calculate pressure drop of the multiphase flow pipelines using anti-agglomerant, which can provide support for hydrate anti-agglomerant application. 展开更多

Generating the rogue waves in offshore engineering is investigated,first of all,to forecast its occurrence to protect the offshore structure from being attacked,to study the mechanism and hydrodynamic properties of rouge wave experimentally as well as the rouge/structure interaction for the structure design.To achieve these purposes demands an accurate wave generation and calculation.In this paper,we establish a spatial domain model of fourth order nonlinear Schrdinger(NLS) equation for describing deep-water wave trains in the moving coordinate system.In order to generate rogue waves in the experimental tank efficiently,we take care that the transient water wave(TWW) determines precisely the concentration of time/place.First we simulate the three-dimensional wave using TWW in the numerical tank and modeling the deepwater basin with a double-side multi-segmented wave-maker in Shanghai Jiao Tong University(SJTU) under the linear superposing theory.To discuss its nonlinearity for guiding the experiment,we set the TWW as the initial condition of the NLS equation.The differences between the linear and nonlinear simulations are presented.Meanwhile,the characteristics of the transient water wave,including water particle velocity and wave slope,are investigated,which are important factors in safeguarding the offshore structures. 展开更多

Artificial upwelling, as a geoengineering tool, has received worldwide attention because it may actualize ocean fertilization in a sustainable way, which could potentially alleviate the pressures on the fish stocks and human-driven climate change in the ocean. We reviewed the current knowledge on the development of an artificial upwelling system and its potential environmental effects. Special attention was given to the research progress on the air-lift concept artificial upwelling by Zhejiang University. The research on artificial upwelling over the past few decades has generated a range of devices that have been successfully applied in the field for months. Based on field experiments and the associated modeling results, part of them reported positive effects on increasing primary production and enhancing CO2 sequestration. However, as a significant disturbance to the environment, especially for large-scale applications, the uncertainties related to the potential effects on ecosystem remain unsolved. Zhejiang University has overcome the technical challenges in designing and fabricating a robust and high efficiency artificial upwelling device which has been examined in two field experiments in Qiandao Lake and one sea trial in the East China Sea. It was investigated that cold and hypoxic deep ocean water(DOW) could be uplifted to the euphotic layer, which could potentially change the nutrient distribution and adjust the N/P ratio. Both simulation and field experiments results confirmed that utilizing self-powered energy to inject compressed air to uplift DOW was a valid and efficient method. Therefore, further field-based research on artificial upwelling, especially for long-term field research is required to test the scientific hypothesis. 展开更多
