Binzhou section of Changshen highway was selected to study the effectiveness of road sweeping in decreasing the pollutant loads of highway runoff.With on-site continuous sampling the discharge rules of Cu Cd Pb and Zn are analyzed.The total and dissolved event mean concentrations of Cu Pb and Zn are calculated and the loads of heavy metals attached to particles sampled before and after rainfall are also studied.A test section on highway road was swept in different frequencies during a week and the amount of removed particles was measured.Based on the analysis of highway runoff and road sweeping a prediction equation is established to calculate the pollution control efficiency of the sweeping measure and the results indicate that the 1 time/week road sweeping method can remove 47.93% of dissolved Cu 46.87% of Pb and 44.21% of Zn. 展开更多

Peroxodiphosphate anion (a powerful oxidant) can be formed in a special water-based cleaning agent through an electrochemical reaction on boron-doped diamond electrodes. This electrochemical reaction was applied during the oxidation,decomposition, and removal of organic contaminations on a silicon wafer surface, and it was used as the first step in the diamond electrochemical cleaning technique (DECT). The cleaning effects of DECT were compared with the RCA cleaning technique, including the silicon surface chemical composition that was observed with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the morphology observed with atomic force microscopy. The measurement results show that the silicon surface cleaned by DECT has slightly less organic residue and lower micro-roughness,so the new technique is more effective than the RCA cleaning technique. 展开更多

This paper is to study appropriate control strategies for a clarifier in an industrial wastewater treatment plant. Five control strategies are proposed, implemented and evaluated in a simulation software (West ++). The sludge blanket height and the effluent suspended solids concentration were proposed as the measured variable. The manipulated variable was the quantity of polymer added to the system. The strategies were evaluated in terms of their ability to maintain the sludge blanket height below 1.5m, their polymer requirements, their sensitivity to poor tuning and the required control action. 展开更多

The removal of phosphate from municipal sewage by high gradient magnetic separation using aluminium sulphate as precipitating agent and Fe3O4 as seeding material was studied. The effects of aluminium sulphate, Fe3O4, magnetic field intensity, pH value and flow-rate of sewage on phosphorus removal rate were investigated. The results show that addition of 200 mg/L Al2(SO4)3·18H2O and 300 mg/L Fe3O4, magnetic field intensity of 200 kA/m, pH value of 4.57.0 and flow-rate of 6.15 cm/s are both efficient and economic technical parameters for removal of phosphate. The pH value has a tremendous effect on the removal of phosphate. In the pH range of (4.5)7.0, more than 95% phosphate can be removed. Theoretical analysis indicates that the solubility of AlPO4 is minimum at pH 4.07.0 and the electrostatic attractive force between AlPO4 and Fe3O4 is maximum at pH 4.5(6.5.) 展开更多

Using air pollution detecting equipments ITX, ATX620 and IBRID-MX6 Multi gas monitors a pioneer research was carried out to assess the levels of the exhausted gas emission in double-floored car parks of the Holy Prophet Mosque in Al-Madinah A l-Munawarah from early 12:00 to 14:00 of Friday and from 19:00 to 22:30 at holy month, Ramadan. The percentage of both carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) had significantly increased (p 〈 0.05-0.005). The peak levels of these air pollutants were between 13:15-13:20 during Fridays. The increase in the emission of these exhausted gases was concomitant with the significant decrease (p 〈 0.05) in oxygen (02) levels but the latter recovered its levels after 13:20 hours. The arithmetic total mean density of vehicle per minute (vpm) at Salam Road, the busiest road of Al-Madinah, during hours (07:00-09:00), (13:00-15:00) and (17:00-19:00) of both Friday and Saturdays respectively were (8/45, 16/40 and 36/43). The increase in air pollution has been attributed to a dramatic increase in number of public cars use the car parks during these times, the consequent congestion at entries, the excess or/and poor consumption of fuels being utilized and the inadequate ventilation. 展开更多

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast is located in the south-western part of Ukraine, close to the geographical center of Europe at the junction of the two major geographic units, the East European Plain and the Eastern Carpathians (the Carpathian region of Ukraine). Between September 2013 and September 2015, the expert group of the Department of Organic and Analytical Chemistry of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University conducted the mobile monitoring of air cleanliness in Ivano-Frankivsk region; the authors monitored the level of air contamination with seven gases: carbon monoxide and dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, formaldehyde, beta-particles, and gamma radiation. For this purpose, there were used six automatic analyzers "Dozor-C-P", the formaldehyde Gas Analyzer "MIC-98170", and the radiometer "TERRA". The monitoring resulted in the making of three maps of Ivano-Frankivsk region, on which the average levels of concentration of three particular gases (CO2, SO2, and CH20) throughout all the districts of the oblast were marked. There was registered the excess of CH20 limits--the consequences of the presence of the chipboard and wood-fiber production, for which formaldehyde is used as a raw material. Also there was observed the excess of SO2 in the air caused by gas fumes from vehicles and thermal power stations. 展开更多

Phosphorus Recovery as Struvite from the Supernatant of Anaerobic Digestion in Wastewater Treatment Plant

Furthermore, it has an almost one-way circulation on earth, so it is necessary to close the phosphorus cycle loop. Phosphorus could be recovered as struvite, which is a good slow-released fertilizer for agriculture. The supernatant of anaerobic digestion used to treat sludge from wastewater treatment plant is one main source from which phosphorus can be recovered. Studies have proven that phosphorus recovery from digester supematant is a feasible choice to preserve phosphorus rock technically and economically. A modified "PHOSNIX" P-recovery process was applied under the operating conditions of a 9.0 pH value and a 1.8 mg: P ratio with the influent of the centrate coming from the sludge centrifuge of the Songjiang Wastewater Treatment Plant in Shanghai. More than 80% influent phosphorus was recovered as struvite. Crystal products with good purity and low heavy metal content were gained. The largest crystal had a length of up to 0.26 mm. It was found in our study that the reaction time did not play an important role in crystal growth. Therefore, the optimization of the reaction condition for crystal growth should be examined in future study. 展开更多

Based on the characteristics of impulse noises, the authors establish a new filter, Iterative Adaptive Median Filter (IAMF). Acccording to the characteristics of images polluted by impulse noises, they establish weight function combined with iterative algorithm to eliminate noises. In IAMF filter process, because the noise sixes do not participate in the computation, they do not influence the normal points in the image, therefore IAMF can retain the detail well, maintain the good clarity after processing image, and simultaneously reduce the computation. Experiments showed that IAMF have ideal denoising effect for the images polluted by the impulse noises; especially when the noise rates are more than 0.5, IAMF is mote prominent, even when the noise rotes are more than 0.9, IAMF can achieve a satisfactory results. 展开更多

The European Union Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS), Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI) are just a few examples of the ambitious EU initiative that heavily relies on such instruments. Effect of Earthworms on Removal of Pathogens during Stabilization of Industrial Organics

To investigate feasibility of pathogen free industrial organics with higher agronomic value, the industrial organic wastes were subjected to vermistabilization. The body of earthworm work as "biofilter" and they can "purify" and also "disinfect" and "detoxify" municipal and industrial organics. The microbiomics of gut and cast of earthworm (Eisenia foetida Savigny) and their association with vermistabilization was studied to determine the microbial quantification in reactors (industrial organics). Worm were reared in five reactors viz. Sewage sludge (SS), Paper mill industry sludge (PS), Vegetable processing industry (VP), Tannery waste (TW) and Meat process industrial sludge (MP) for ninety days. The microbial load (Salmonella, Shigella, Escherichia, Mycobacterium, Streptococcus) in gut and cast, biomass, recovery of cast in different reactors were determined, periodically. The microbiomics of worms gut revealed the removal of Salmonella (12-18 × 10^8±0.02 to 0-4 × 10^3 + 0.05 CFU/g), Shigella (14-23 × 10^8 ± 0.04 to 0-4 × 10^3 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Escherichia (4-16 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0-4 × 10^2 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Mycobacterium (3-16 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0-3 × 10^2 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Streptococcus (6-16 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0-4 × 10^3 ± 0.05 CFU/g) during stabilization of industrial organics. Similarly, reduction in pathogens Salmonella (12-19 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0-8 ×10^3 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Shigella (7-20× 10^8 ± 0.04 to 0-2 ×10^3 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Escherichia (2-20 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0.0-2 × 10^3 ± 0.05), Mycobacterium (1-8 × 10^8 ±0.05 to 0.0-5 × 10^2 ± 0.05 CFU/g), Streptococcus (8-18 × 10^8 ± 0.02 to 0-7 × 10^3 ± 0.05 CFU/g) in castings of industrial organics indicates the selective nature of feeding of worm. This amply demonstrates that these pathogens have been eliminated as they entered in food chain of worms. However, it may not be possible to remove pathogens completely, but at least worms change the "microbial make-up" of industrial organics to make it harmless to the soil and enable its use as a nutritive organic fertilizer. 展开更多

An electricity generation planning model of the six major Chinese power grids was developed based on the General Algebraic Modeling System to evaluate and analyze the CDM (clean development mechanism), including consideration of the environmental co-benefits of reductions in air pollutants (SO~, NO~ and particulate matter) achieved by advanced electricity generation technologies incorporating CCS (carbon capture and storage). An objective function was developed that included revenue from sales of electric power, total system cost, the cost of CO2 transport and storage, and emissions reduction co-benefits for SOx, NO~, and particulate matter. The objective function was minimized using an optimization model. We also developed a method for evaluating and analyzing the potential for transferring advanced power generation technologies into the Chinese power system through the CDM. We found that: (1) thermal power generation is predominant in the Chinese electricity system and will remain so for a long time; (2) advanced thermal plants are being installed as a result of the CDM, which contribute to decreasing emissions of CO2 and other air pollutants; and (3) CCS projects have significant potential to reduce substantial and sustained CO2 emissions from the Chinese power and industrial sectors. 展开更多

Ex-situ soil washing technology offers advantages such as speed and efficiency of remediation and range of application and has been developed to conform with legal requirements and best management practices in USA and some European countries. In this study, nano-sulfonated graphene (SGE) was used as a washing agent to evaluate different processing (washing) parameters for the ectopic leaching removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from a coking plant soil. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the characteristics of the SGE tested. The results showed that SGE had a strong adsorption capacity for PAHs through the role of π-π, H-π, and anion-π interactions. The washing parameters, an SGE concentration of 2000 mg L-1, a liquid/soil (L/S) ratio of 10:1, and 4 cycles of successive washing, were set to arrive to the optimum condition for achieving more than 80% of PAH removal. Under the optimum condition, the PAH removal rate decreased with increasing ring numbers. After one washing cycle at SGE concentration of 2000 mg L-1 and L/S ratio of 10:1, the PAH removal rate of the SCE tested was much higher than that of Tween 80 (TW80) or methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MCD) (P 〈 0.01). Therefore, SGE is a promising material for the nanoremediation of PAH-contaminated soils. 展开更多

Potentials of GHG reductions from wastewater treatment for the CDM

The study aims to evaluate the potential of GHG (greenhouse gas) reductions by installing an anaerobic digester in a wastewater treatment facility in Southeast Asia. Then the break-even point of additional investment to reduce GHG is obtained by exchanging carbon price as emissions credits. In the project scenario, the wastewater treatment system has the digester, where methane (biogas) is produced and recovered. Compared with the baseline scenario, the biogas has calorific value to produce heat and electricity, and can substitute fossil fuels for power generation. The objective of the study is to define the relationship between CERs (certified emission reductions) and investment costs, and the beak-even point, finding out the dominant pa- rameters in the system. Financial parameters such as capital costs and operating costs are considered to evaluate the investmerit costs. The result shows that the methane recovery reduces 54% of GHG emissions. Although the substitution of the biogas for the fossil fuels reduces only 6% of the GHG emissions, the electricity output can satisfy the electricity consumption.
