The origin of which can be attribu...Underground water (Borehole) has been the main alternative source of drinking water for most communities in my country. Previous studies have revealed high levels of contamination. The origin of which can be attributed to geochemical processes, combustion of fossil fuels, mining and anthropogenic activities. Most borehole water and well water in local communities of Nigeria are not safe for drinking due to heavy industrial and environmental pollution. This study was undertaken to assess the quality in some selected boreholes in the Port Harcourt metropolis for a period of two years. Borehole water samples were randomly collected from thirteen boreholes in a local community in plastic bottles (100 mL) in the months of September for the years of study (2010 & 2011). Four out of the seven heavy metals analyzed were found to be present in the first year of study. These were Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn. In the second year of study, Pb, Cr, Fe and Co were not detected in all of the samples except Cu and Fe which were present in only two samples. Mn and Zn were found to be present in all of the samples for both years of study.展开更多

Significant discrepancies have been reported among satellite-derive...Because land cover plays an important role in global climate change studies, assessing the agreement among different land cover products is critical. Significant discrepancies have been reported among satellite-derived land cover products, especially at the regional scale. Dif- ferent classification schemes are a key obstacle to the comparison of products and are considered the main fac- tor behind the disagreement among the different products. Using a feature-based overlap metric, we investigated the degree of spatial agreement and quantified the overall and class-specific agreement among the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectoradiometer (MODIS), Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC2000), and the National Land Cover/Use Data- sets (NLCD) products, and the author assessed the prod- ucts by ground reference data at the regional scale over China. The areas with a low degree of agreement mostly occurred in heterogeneous terrain and transition zones, while the areas with a high degree of agreement occurred in major plains and areas with homogeneous vegetation. The overall agreement of the MODIS and GLC2000 products was 50.8% and 52.9%, and the overall accuracy was 50.3% and 41.9%, respectively. Class-specific agree- ment or accuracy varied significantly. The high-agreement classes are water, grassland, cropland, snow and ice, and bare areas, whereas classes with low agreement are shru- bland and wetland in both MODIS and GLC2000. These characteristics of spatial patterns and quantitative agree- ment could be partly explained by the complex landscapes, mixed vegetation, low separability of spectro-temporal- texture signals, and coarse pixels. The differences of class definition among different the classification schemes also affects the agreement. Each product had its advantages and limitations, but neither the overall accuracy nor the class-specific accuracy could meet the requirements of climate modeling.展开更多

A...The Phlegrean Fields are an area in the west of Naples (Italy), with a huge interest in geophysical community being a volcanic caldera among the most dangerous in the world. Various techniques of monitoring exist. Among all, the control of ground deformations and variations in sea level has considerable importance. Time series of ground deformation and tidal data in this area have been analysed to highlight these important geophysical features and these results are compared with those obtained from similar data in other time periods. With regard to first mentioned, tiltmetric data have been analysed. These ones come from the tiltmeter network sited in Pozzuoli. Instead, the tidal data come from the tide gauge in Pozzuoli. Data have been analysed by means of a wavelet approach, using a Continuos Wavelet Transform and using, as so-called "Wavelet Mother", a Gabor-Morlet wavelet. For each time series, the principal harmonic constituents result: lunar semidiurnal (M2), solar semidiumal (S2) and lunar diurnal (K1). Other harmonic constituents, having frequencies higher than 1/hour, are present.These last ones could be interpreted as seiches and they could be linked up with generation of discrete plumes of rising magma. Frequencies at which there is the occurrence of these seiches are in agreement with previous studies.展开更多

The gauge group G is defined and then we introduce the gauge-covariant derivative Dμ. The strength tensor of the gravitational gauge field is also obtained and a gauge-invariant Lagrangian including the cosmological constant is constructed. A model whose gravitational gauge potentials A^α μ (x) have spherical symmetry, depending only on the radial coordinate τ is considered and an analytical solution of these equations, which induces the Schwarzschild-de-Sitter metric on the gauge group space, is then determined. All the calculations have been performed by GR Tensor II computer algebra package, running on the Maple V platform, along with several routines that we have written for our model.展开更多

For this comparative study, the authors selected the area of Lower Bavaria for lowland wood, as a great deal of wood is imported from this region to western Austria. At first, the felling area is described for both regions, from forest site to sawmill. Thereby, the authors create mean values related to timber harvesting and transportation, which are applicable to the whole of western Austria and Lower Bavaria, southern Germany. Secondly, the eco-balance of mountain and lowland wood is established. It is based on the following impact categories: global warming potential, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, ozone depletion potential and non-renewable primary energy. The environmental impact is more expressive if the results are applied to a specific construction part (i.e., glued laminated timber-ceiling). Our research study showed the eco-balance of western Austrian mountain wood is more favourable than the environmental impact of harvesting lowland wood in southern Germany.展开更多
Prophylactic strategies against hepatitis B virus(HBV) recurrence after liver transplantation(LT) are essential for patients with HBV-related disease.Before LT, lamivudine(LAM) was proposed to be down-graded from firs...Prophylactic strategies against hepatitis B virus(HBV) recurrence after liver transplantation(LT) are essential for patients with HBV-related disease.Before LT, lamivudine(LAM) was proposed to be down-graded from first-to second-line therapy.In contrast, adefovir dipivoxil(ADV) has been approved not only as first-line therapy but also as rescue therapy for patients with LAM resistance.Furthermore, combination of ADV and LAM may result in lower risk of ADV resistance than ADV monotherapy.Other new drugs such as entecavir, telbivudine and tenofovir, are probably candidates for the treatment of hepatitis-B-surface-antigen-positive patients awaiting LT.After LT, low-dose intramuscular hepatitis B immunoglobulin(HBIG), in combination with LAM, has been regarded as the most cost-effective regimen for the prevention of post-transplant HBV recurrence in recipients without pretransplant LAM resistance and rapidly accepted in many transplant centers.With the introduction of new antiviral drugs, new hepatitis B vaccine and its new adjuvants, post-transplant HBIG-free therapeutic regimens with new oral antiviral drug combinations or active HBV vaccination combined with adjuvants will be promising, particularly in those patients with low risk of HBV recurrence.展开更多

Then handover decision is made with the handover queuing and channel allocation strategy. An adaptive channel resource allocation scheme is considered to optimize resource utilization with guarantee of emergency communication, which is significant for emergency rescue and disaster relief. In order to count the diversity of pers...In the daily life,people often repeat regular routes in certain periods. In this paper,a mining system is developed to find the continuous route patterns of personal past trips. In order to count the diversity of personal moving status,the mining system employs the adaptive GPS data recording and five data filters to guarantee the clean trips data. The mining system uses a client/server architecture to protect personal privacy and to reduce the computational load. The server conducts the main mining procedure but with insufficient information to recover real personal routes. In order to improve the scalability of sequential pattern mining,a novel pattern mining algorithm,continuous route pattern mining(CRPM),is proposed. This algorithm can tolerate the different disturbances in real routes and extract the frequent patterns. Experimental results based on nine persons' trips show that CRPM can extract more than two times longer route patterns than the traditional route pattern mining algorithms.展开更多

Quantitative analysis is increasingly being used in team sports to better understand performance in these stylized,delineated,complex social systems.Here,the authors provide a first step toward understanding the patte...Quantitative analysis is increasingly being used in team sports to better understand performance in these stylized,delineated,complex social systems.Here,the authors provide a first step toward understanding the pattern-forming dynamics that emerge from collective offensive and defensive behavior in team sports.The authors propose a novel method of analysis that captures how teams occupy sub-areas of the field as the ball changes location.The authors use this method to analyze a game of association football(soccer) based upon a hypothesis that local player numerical dominance is key to defensive stability and offensive opportunity.The authors find that the teams consistently allocated more players than their opponents in sub-areas of play closer to their own goal.This is consistent with a predominantly defensive strategy intended to prevent yielding even a single goal.The authors also find differences between the two teams' strategies:while both adopted the same distribution of defensive,midfield,and attacking players(a 4:3:3 system of play),one team was significantly more effective in maintaining both defensive and offensive numerical dominance for defensive stability and offensive opportunity.That team indeed won the match with an advantage of one goal(2 to 1) but the analysis shows the advantage in play was more pervasive than the single goal victory would indicate.The proposed focus on the local dynamics of team collective behavior is distinct from the traditional focus on individual player capability.It supports a broader view in which specific player abilities contribute within the context of the dynamics of multiplayer team coordination and coaching strategy.By applying this complex system analysis to association football,the authors can understand how players' and teams' strategies result in successful and unsuccessful relationships between teammates and opponents in the area of play.展开更多
Septic arthritis of acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a rare entity. It is generally seen in patients who are immunocompromised. Only 15 cases have been reported till now, with only one case series of 6 patients, We r...Septic arthritis of acromioclavicular (AC) joint is a rare entity. It is generally seen in patients who are immunocompromised. Only 15 cases have been reported till now, with only one case series of 6 patients, We report a case of septic arthritis of AC joint in an immunocompetent child. A 9 years old girl presented with history of pain in left shoulder for 4 days associated with fever, No history suggestive of any immunocompromised state was complained. On local examination, a swelling of around 3 cm in diameter was found over left AC joint region with raised local temperature, tenderness on palpation and positive response in fluctuation test. Total leukocyte count was 18.7 - 109/L with 80% of neutrophils. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was 28 mm/1 h. C-reactive protein (CRP) was 12 mg/L. X-ray showed enlarged left AC joint space. Ultrasound revealed hypoechoic collection in the AC joint and the surrounding area. The aspirate was thick and purulent in nature, revealing Gram positive cocci at staining. Arthrotomy and thorough lavage of AC joint was done. Culture of the aspirate showed Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) after 48 hours that was sensitive to amikacin, gentamicin, erythromycin and teicoplanin. Patient was symptom-free at 2 months of follow-up with no signs of osteomyelitis on the radiographs. Thus this is the first case of AC joint septic arthritis in healthy individual. Being proximal to the shoulder joint, AC joint septic arthritis can be confused with the shoulder joint septic arthritis. Thus, high index of suspicion is required for accurate diagnosis.展开更多

A 9 years old girl presented with history of pain in left shoulder for 4 days associated with fever, No history suggestive of any immunocompromised state was complained. On local examination, a swelling of around 3 cm in diameter was found over left AC joint region with raised local temperature, tenderness on palpation and positive response in fluctuation test. Total leukocyte count was 18.7 - 109/L with 80% of neutrophils. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was 28 mm/1 h. C-reactive protein (CRP) was 12 mg/L. X-ray showed enlarged left AC joint space. Ultrasound revealed hypoechoic collection in the AC joint and the surrounding area. The aspirate was thick and purulent in nature, revealing Gram positive cocci at staining. Arthrotomy and thorough lavage of AC joint was done. Culture of the aspirate showed Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) after 48 hours that was sensitive to amikacin, gentamicin, erythromycin and teicoplanin. Patient was symptom-free at 2 months of follow-up with no signs of osteomyelitis on the radiographs. Thus this is the first case of AC joint septic arthritis in healthy individual. Being proximal to the shoulder joint, AC joint septic arthritis can be confused with the shoulder joint septic arthritis. Thus, high index of suspicion is required for accurate diagnosis.
