Antibacterial and antifungal activities of different parts of Tribulus terrestris L. growing in Iraq

Antimicrobial activity of organic and aqueous extracts from fruits, leaves and roots of Tribulus terrestris L., an Iraqi medicinal plant used as urinary anti-infective in folk medicine, was examined against I l species of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms： Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Serratia marcescens, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida albicans using microdilution method in 96 multiwell microtiter plates. All the extracts from the different parts of the plant showed antimicrobial activity against most tested microorganisms. The most active extract against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria was ethanol extract from the fruits with a minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） value of 0.15 mg/ml against B. subtilis, B. cereus, P. vulgaris and C. diphtheriae. In addition, the same extract from the same plant part demonstrated the strongest antifungal activity against C. albicans with an MIC value of 0.15 mg/ml.

Teaching Religious Education in Schools and Adolescents＇ Social and Emotional Development. An Action Research on the Role of Religious Education and School Community in Adolescents＇ Lives

The presentation of the findings of this article is based on an action research focused on the supportive role of the school in adolescents＇ lives, whereby Religious Education＇s contribution to the social and emotional development of adolescents （11-15） is combined with the evaluation of the potential offered by a constructivist approach to the learning process. The research commenced in 2012 and is now in its third ＂year. The project is based on an intervention at a high school in an impoverished suburb of Athens and researches educational practices through interpretative-ethnographic methods. The researcher has attempted to answer the question of whether the design of the learning environments is effective not only in the learning process, but also on inter-communication and ＂connectedness＂ between the members of the learning community. The findings so far indicate a correlation between adolescents＇ emotional and social wellbeing and the school＇s approach to knowledge and learning methods, specifically in Religious Education classes. It is fair to say, however, that there exist ethnic, social and family components that are negatively related to a sense of＂connectedness＂ within the school although at the same time Religious Education as a subject is, however, found to be positively related to learning community atmosphere.

Hepatitis C virus infection and health-related quality of life

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) hepatitis and other diseases related to HCV,such as cryoglobulinemia,lymphoma and renal failure,impair health-related quality of life(HRQoL).In addition,HCV per se might directly influence HRQoL via colonization of microglia in the brain or,indirectly,via the effect of systemic inflammatory cytokines which,in turn,can trigger brain interleukin production.The treatment of HCV-related disorders with interferon(IFN) has an effect on HRQoL.Initially,IFN causes a transient deterioration of HRQoL,due to the induction of depression and other side effects of treatment.Subsequently,the subjects who obtain a sustained virologic response experience an improvement in HRQoL.Only rarely does interferon treatment causes permanent detrimental effects on HRQoL,due to residual psychiatric or neurologic side effects.Liver transplantation is the only treatment for end-stage HCV-related liver disease.HRQoL generally improves massively a few months after transplantation,except in the case of serious complications of the transplant procedure.Furthermore,high levels of anxiety and neuroticism pre-transplant are associated with lower HRQoL one year after transplant.Additionally,six months after transplant,patients with HCV who experience virologic recurrence show significantly greater depression,anxiety,phobic anxiety,and paranoid ideation than anti-HCV-negative patients.In conclusion,optimal care for the overall well-being of patients with HCV infection requires adequate knowledge of their neurological and psychological status.

A Coverage-Aware Unequal Clustering Protocol with Load Separation for Ambient Assisted Living Based on Wireless Sensor Networks

Ambient Assisted Living(AAL) is becoming an important research field. Many technologies have emerged related with pervasive computing vision, which can give support for AAL. One of the most reliable approaches is based on wireless sensor networks(WSNs). In this paper, we propose a coverage-aware unequal clustering protocol with load separation(CUCPLS) for data gathering of AAL applications based on WSNs. Firstly, the coverage overlap factor for nodes is introduced that accounts for the degree of target nodes covered. In addition, to balance the intra-cluster and inter-cluster energy consumptions, different competition radiuses of CHs are computed theoretically in different rings, and smaller clusters are formed near the sink. Moreover, two CHs are selected in each cluster for load separation to alleviate the substantial energy consumption difference between a single CH and its member nodes. Furthermore, a backoff waiting time is adopted during the selection of the two CHs to reduce the number of control messages employed. Simulation results demonstrate that the CUCPLS not only can achieve better coverage performance, but also balance the energy consumption of a network and prolong network lifetime.

The reason why religion can exist is that it provides a sense of absolute dependence, which is the ultimate emotion based on the belief of cosmic and human harmony. In a sense, it can be said that religion is absolute piety and humility, which stems from the experience of God＇ s power.

A Study on Feelings of Worriment Due to Middle-Sized Robot in Living Space

Recently, the demand of services for architectural space is more increasing due to the diversification and complication of people＇s needs. In this research, it is assumed that the robot will support people＇s various needs and people＇s lives in the near future. In this study, the authors investigated the relationship between a robot and a person in quasi space close to actual life space. The authors carried out an experiment to clarify the feelings of worriment due to a robot in the living room in the case of Japanese males. This research aims to establish architecture techniques for robots and humans living together. In this experiment, the robot approached a male sitting on a sofa in quasi space. At different distances between the robot and the male, the subject evaluated his feelings of worriment from ＂no worriment＂ to ＂worriment＂ in five steps from one to five. The robot used in this experiment is middle-sized （380 mm （L） × 380 mm （W） × 350 mm （H））. In this experiment, it is considered that the robot asks for help outside when an emergency occurs. In this experiment, the authors had three situations for the subject： watching television, reading a magazine and just sitting.

David Hume＇s Notion of Personal Identity： Implications for Identity Construction and Affective Communal Living in Africana Societies

The notion of personal identity is a topic that is widely discussed in all philosophical traditions-western, African, Asian, and Caribbean. The thread that runs through the different conceptions of personal identity is that the notion is linked with self-consciousness, whether in the metaphysical, epistemological, religious, or social contexts. In this paper, I shall focus attention on Hume＇s conception of personal identity drawing from it, and certain implications for affective communal life in Africana societies. It is a common knowledge among philosophers that Hume denies the ontological and independent existence of the self. For Hume, the self is a bundle of perception. However, in another section of the Treatise of Human Nature, Hume examines the development of what could be considered as self, placing it in a broad social context in which mirroring fellow minds have a critical role. What is significant in Hume＇s conception of personal identity is that the self is the locus of multifarious experiences and the social context in which it is placed enables us to relate the self to affective and relational construction of identity. It is then argued that this conception of identity can be used to stress the need for affection, love, compassion, sympathy, and empathy among persons, which in turn can promote societal transformation in Africana societies.

Impact of hepatitis C virus infection on lifestyle

AIM: To evaluate the impact of the diagnosis of hepatitis C infection on lifestyle habits such as smoking, drinking, sports activity and diet.METHODS: A self-administered, anonymous question-naire was offered to out-patients with HCV infection consecutively attending three clinical centres in Italy.RESULTS: Of the 275 respondents, 62.2% (171) were male. Mean age was 51 (range 20-80) years. Overall, after the diagnosis of hepatitis C, 74.5% of drinkers had modified (giving up or reducing) alcohol consumption, 21.3% of smokers had modifi ed their habits and 32.3% of subjects who reported sports activity had either stopped or reduced frequency of activity or chose a less fatiguing sport. Sixty-four percent of the respondents reported having modified their diet, most of them on physician's advice. CONCLUSION: After the diagnosis of hepatitis C many patients correctly modif ied their alcohol consumption and a minority their smoking habits. The reason for reported changes in diet and physical activity needs further investigations.

The Conversational Implicature in Sense and Sensibility -A CP Perspective

Sense and Sensibility is Jane Austen’s debut which uses Elinor’s and Marianne’s marriage life as the main line, describing exquisitely and vividly the protagonists’ love and marriage. Since the dialogue is one of the basic ways to shape characters in literary works, the analysis of dialogues, especially that of those contradictory dialogues helps better analyze the novel itself. This paper analyzes different conversational implicatures in the typical dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, in order to help us to understand character differences, and to further understand the novel’ s theme. Through the analysis, this paper finds that there exist many indirect expressions in the dialogues in Sense and Sensibility, which reflect that characters violate the four maxims of Cooperative Principle in order to implicitly express their true thoughts and avoid such unpleasant communicational effects as embarrassment and conflict.

Civilization and Art： Lifeworld in the Variety of Visual Experience

The paper examines the assignment of the visual experience in the context of interrelation between civilization and art. Civilization is defined as ＂the survival of the weak＂. It is stressed that this definition can be applied to man, animal and every living being. Lie as ＂someone else＇s truth＂ and art as ＂the process of the creation of ＇copies of the copies of nature＇＂ are considered to be the weak man＇s tools for survival. The author argues that purpose of erotic scenes and scenes of hunting （death and violence） both in the past and in the present is the excitation at the woman of desire to reproduction.

DS-MMAC:A Delay-Sensitive Multi-Channel MAC Protocol for Ambient Assistant Living Systems

In Ambient Assistant Living(AAL) systems, it is a fundamental problem to ensure prompt delivery of detected events, such as irregular heart rate or fall of elderly, to a central processing device(e.g. gateway node). Most of recently proposed MAC protocols for low-power embedded sensing systems(e.g. wireless sensor networks) are designed with energy efficiency as the first goal, so they are not suitable for AAL systems. Although some multi-channel MAC protocols have been proposed to address the problem, most of those protocols ignore the cost of channel switching, which can have reverse effect on network performance, especially latency of data delivery. In this paper, we propose a Delay-Sensitive Multi-channel MAC protocol(DS-MMAC) for AAL systems, which can provide high packet delivery ratio and bound low latency for data delivered to the gateway node. The novelty of the protocol is that an efficient distributed time slot scheduling and channel assignment algorithm is combined with the process of route establishment, which takes the channel switching cost into account and reduces endto-end delay to meet the required delay bound of each data flow. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated through extensive simulations. Results show that DS-MMAC can bound low latency for delivering detected events in AAL system to the gateway, while providing high delivery reliability and low energy consumption.

Haptic Interface with Magnetic Field Sensitive Elastomer

Sense of touch is one of the important information from environment for human to live in daily life. Haptic interface is a hot topic in virtual reality but almost all of the devices focus on fingers and hands as targets. In this paper, we focus on the foot haptic device with magnetic flied sensitive elastomer （MSE）. We developed a haptic unit used as a magnetic field generator for MSE and contact point of foot haptic device. MSE samples mixed with 80 wt% carbonyl iron particles were prepared and evaluated with the developed magnet. Experimental results show that the mechanical property of the haptic unit can be modeled with the adjustable friction element. This property has a good advantage for the haptic unit.

Solid Waste Dumping Site Selection Using GIS and Remote Sensing for Kajiado County, Kenya

Solid waste dumping is a hectic problem in urban and developing areas due to shortage of land for the purpose. The main objective of this study was to select potential areas for suitable solid waste dumping for Kajiado County, Kenya. Eight input map layers including DEM （digital elevation model）, topography, urban settlement, roads, wetlands, rivers, forests and protected areas were prepared and MCDA （Multi Criteria Decision Analysis Methods） were implemented in a GIS （geographic information systems） environment. GIS, RS （remote sensing） and MDCA are powerful tools which can effectively be applied during the planning phase of solid waste management in order to avoid adverse catastrophes in future. The final suitability map was prepared by weighted overlay analyses and leveled as the most suitable, moderate suitable, less suitable and unsuitable areas. The area of each suitability level was calculated using spatial statistics. Polygons representing the most suitable sites were further analyzed in terms of area perimeter ratio in order to investigate the most suitable areas in terms of shape regularity. The leading four polygons considered were marked A, B, C, D respectively in the final map. This study showed that suitable areas for solid waste landfills were limited and scattered in the study area.

Perspectives in application of biosensors for the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine

Biosensor is an instrument which is sensitive to biological material and converts its concentration into electrical signals.Organisms such as enzymes, antibodies, tissues, cells and so on can selectively identify specific substances. Thesemolecular recognition functions can be combined with the target, such as the binding of antibodies and antigens, and thebinding of enzymes to the substrate through the recognition process. Biosensor has the advantages of high specificity,high sensitivity, fast reaction speed, low cost and easy operation. Popular Catholicism Based on Sensory Engagement and Corporeal Perception

Pat Mora＇s House of Houses is a collection of memories about a Southwestern Mexican immigrant family. She develops multilayered meanings of the house in terms of psychological, spiritual, and sensory influences on both her private and communal life. She deploys sensory signiflers to portray religious and spiritual memories in a picturesque or performative way. The book reveals that the primacy of the senses as a perceptual device transforms the habitual religious rituals of popular Catholicism into the unconscious. This book shows how sensory perception is engaged in appropriating mystical space/time and interiorizing spiritual objects of family life. Thus, the paper investigates how the sensory agencies contribute to exploring culturally plural ways of experiencing the divine. It also illustrates how Mora＇s deployment of corporeality is related to her reassessment of femaleness and understanding of a meaning of the divine, which is distinctively embodied through 1o cotidiano. In effect, it focuses on Mora＇s treatment of the sensible body in connection with spiritual and religious connotations.

Delimitation of Urban Growth Boundary Based on the Coordination of Ecology and Residential Activity Spaces: A Case Study of Jinan, China

Delimitation of an urban growth boundary(UGB)can effectively curb disorderly urban expansion,optimize urban development space and protect the ecological environment.Eco-environmental sensitivity was evaluated and areas prohibiting construction expansion were extracted by establishing an index system.Point of interest(POI)and microblog data were utilized to analyze the expansion of residential activity space.Urban space expansion potential was calculated using a comprehensive evaluation model,and an urban growth boundary for Jinan in 2020 was delimited combining the predicted urban expansion scale.The results showed that:(1)An evaluation of eco-environmental sensitivity can effectively protect ecological land and provide an ecological basis for urban expansion.Regions with high eco-environmental sensitivities in Jinan are located along the banks of the Yellow River and Xiaoqing River and in southeast mountainous areas,but eco-environmental sensitivities in the central,north and southeast areas are relatively low;(2)The model to evaluate urban residential activity expansion can quantify the spatial distribution of urban residents’activities.Regions with high potential for residential activity space expansion in Jinan are mainly concentrated in the middle of Jinan and most are part of existing built-up areas and surrounding areas;(3)The method that delimits urban growth boundaries based on the coordination of ecology and residential activity space is reasonable.Spatial expansion in Jinan mainly extends towards the east and west wings,and the boundary conforms to the spatial strategy guiding Jinan’s development and is consistent with the overall layout in related plans.Considering both ecological protection and the internal forces driving urban expansion,the method of urban growth boundary delimitation used in this study can provide a reference and practical help for studies and management of urban development in the new era.

Recombinant expression of different mutant K-ras gene in pancreatic cancer Bxpc-3 cells and its effects on chemotherapy sensitivity

K-ras is a member of ras gene family which is involved in cell survival,proliferation and differentiation.When a mutation occurs in ras gene,the activation of Ras proteins may be prolonged to induce oncogenesis.However,the relationship between K-ras mutation and clinical outcomes in pancreatic cancer patients treated with chemotherapy agents is still under debate.In this study,we constructed five pAcGFP1-C3 plasmids for different types of K-ras gene(WT,G12V,G12R,G12D,and G13D)and stably transfected human pancreatic cancer Bxpc-3 cells with these genes.The wild type and mutant clones showed a comparable growth and expression of K-Ras-GFP fusion protein.The expression of some K-ras mutations resulted in a reduced sensitivity to gefitinib,5-FU,docetaxel and gemcitabine,while showed no effects on erlotinib or cisplatin.Moreover,compared with the wild type clone,K-Ras downstream signals(phospho-Akt and/or phospho-Erk)were increased in K-ras mutant clones.Interestingly,different types of K-ras mutation had non-identical K-Ras downstream signal activities and drug responses.Our results are the first to reveal the relationship between different K-ras mutation and drug sensitivities of these anti-cancer drugs in pancreatic cancer cells in vitro.

Paying less but harvesting more:the effect of unconscious acceptance in regulating frustrating emotion

Previous studies indicate that emotion regulation may occur unconsciously, without the cost of cognitive effort, while conscious acceptance may enhance negative experiences despite having potential long-term health benefits. Thus, it is important to overcome this weakness to boost the efficacy of the acceptance strategy in negative emotion regulation. As unconscious regulation occurs with little cost of cognitive resources, the current study hypothesizes that unconscious acceptance regulates the emotional consequence of negative events more effectively than does conscious acceptance. Subjects were randomly assigned to conscious acceptance, unconscious acceptance and no-regulation conditions. A frustrating arithmetic task was used to induce negative emotion. Emotional experiences were assessed on the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale while emotion-related physiological activation was assessed by heart-rate reactivity. Results showed that conscious acceptance had a significant negative affective consequence, which was absent during unconscious acceptance. That is, unconscious acceptance was linked with little reduction of positive affect during the experience of frustration, while this reduction was prominent in the control and conscious acceptance groups. Instructed, conscious acceptance resulted in a greater reduction of positive affect than found for the control group. In addition, both conscious and unconscious acceptance strategies significantly decreased emotion-related heart-rate activity(to a similar extent) in comparison with the control condition. Moreover, heart-rate reactivity was positively correlated with negative affect and negatively correlated with positive affect during the frustration phase relative to the baseline phase, in both the control and unconscious acceptance groups. Thus, unconscious acceptance not only reduces emotion-related physiological activity but also better protects mood stability compared with conscious acceptance. This suggests that the clinical practice of acceptance therapy may need to consider using the unconscious priming of an accepting attitude, instead of intentionally instructing people to implement such a strategy, to boost the efficacy of acceptance in emotion regulation.
