The paper makes an attempt to categorize and...The wide application of Chinese and foreign allusions is a big feature of QIAN Zhong-shu＇s only novel and masterpiece Fortress Besieged, which was first published in 1947. The paper makes an attempt to categorize and analyze the strategies in translating allusions adopted by Jeanne Kelly and Nathan K. Mao in the only English version. The strategies include literal translation, literal translation plus endnote, literal translation plus explanation added in the text, interpretation of the implied meaning plus endnote, and interpretation of the implied meaning in the text. In particular, the strategy of literal translation plus endnote is mostly adopted. This is indicative of the translators＇ wish to be as faithful as possible to the source text. What＇s more, the literal translation strategy and use of endnotes is of a big help to communicate the Chinese culture to foreigners展开更多
This paper proposes a novel LDPC based differential unitary space-frequency coding (DUSFC) scheme for MIMO-OFDM systems when neither the transmitter nor the receiver has access to the channel state information (CSI). ...This paper proposes a novel LDPC based differential unitary space-frequency coding (DUSFC) scheme for MIMO-OFDM systems when neither the transmitter nor the receiver has access to the channel state information (CSI). The new DUSFC strategy basically consists of coding across transmit antennas and OFDM tones simultaneously as well as differential modulation in the time-domain. It can fully exploit the inherent advantages provided by the multipath fading channels, resulting in a high degree of diversity. The state-of-the-art low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are concatenated with our DUSFC as channel coding to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance considerably. Owing to the maximum multipath diversity and large coding advantages, LDPC-DUSFC strongly outperforms the differential unitary space-time coded OFDM techniques re- cently proposed in literature. The corresponding iterative decoding algorithm without channel estimation is finally provided to offer significant performance gain. Simulation results illustrate the merits of the proposed scheme.展开更多
This study attempts to explore the relationship between translation and English as a foreign language writing proficiency and the writing time's effect on this relationship through detailed analysis of a case stud...This study attempts to explore the relationship between translation and English as a foreign language writing proficiency and the writing time's effect on this relationship through detailed analysis of a case study of sixteen English majors who are required to write four English compositions, each time each group adopting one of the two different writing methods: the direct method and the translation-based method. The first two writing tasks have a time limit of 45 minutes while the latter two do not. The results show that the translation-based method has advantages over the direct writing method with regard to the quality of the compositions. Based on this finding, the author claims that the translation-based method is an effective way to train and enhance EFL learners' English writing ability.展开更多
This study is undertaken to find out writers' attention patterns in these two different writing methods (the direct method and the translation-based method) during the writing process through the think-aloud metho...This study is undertaken to find out writers' attention patterns in these two different writing methods (the direct method and the translation-based method) during the writing process through the think-aloud method and EFL learners' perception of the advantages and disadvantages of those two writing methods.The results show that the subjects' attention patterns in the direct method and in the translation-based method are quite different and the differences are mainly embodied in the linguistic level attention and personal comment.As far as the subjects are concerned,writing directly in English is easier and faster than writing through translation,and the direct writing method often helps them learn English language and forces them to focus on English expression.In contrast,for the translation-based writing method,the subjects as a whole relate that they have a wide range of vocabulary and expressions,have a greater number of ideas,and can think through ideas clearly.展开更多
