Studies of communicative approach and teaching reform on college English

In pace with the constant increase of exchange with other countries, the traditional teaching approach cannot meet the demand of modem education. But the communicative approach conforms to historical trends, focusing on students and developing their overall language ability to handle changes and solve problems. Proceeding from the tortuous course of teaching reform on English, analyzing theories of foreign language approaches and characteristics of communicative approach and researching into its strategies, the author aims to study how to spur teaching reform on college English towards great success.

Adapting communicative language teaching approach to China＇s context

The issue on which this essay focuses is how to adapt the Communicative Language Teaching （CLT） Approach to China＇s context. With the recent accession to the WTO, the long-awaited Olympic games in Beijing, China has made learning English a national priority. It is very important and necessary to research on how to adapt CLT flexibly and appropriately to China＇s context if most Chinese English learners are to gain a good grasp of oral English, and if specialist learning is to be achieved by those who need English for business and academic purposes. Therefore this essay is structured as follows： First, analyzing the different types of English teaching methods in China and then focusing on the CLT Method. By analyzing and contrasting these English teaching methods, the need to change the current English teaching methods in China will be discovered. Finally, it explains the problems of adopting the more modem CLT Approach and gives suggestions on how it may best be adapted to the Chinese context.

The Application of Task-Based Language Teaching to ＂Longman English Interactive＂

Interactive courses are becoming more and more popular today. LEI （Longman English Interactive） is one of them Recently, many teachers in China's Mainland learn to adopt TBLT （task-based language teaching） in these interactive courses including LEI. However, some of them feel confused about how to apply TBLT more effectively in their classes since they may not understand clearly why TBLT is such a ＂matching＂ teaching method for this type of classes. To illustrate this issue, this paper sets LEI as an example. It firstly analyzes the syllabus design of LEI based on the theories of communicative teaching approach, then discusses about why the renowned TBLT is a suitable method to organize the class, and finally exemplifies how TBLT can be fully applied to the course in real classrooms. The objective of this paper is to inspire English teachers to have a better application of TBLT in interactive classes alike.

Communicative Language Teaching in a Chinese University Context: Beliefs and Practice

This paper reports communicative language teaching （CLT） in a university context in China. It examines the classroom observations of five English language teacher participants to reveal how CLT is applied in their English classes. Two of the five participants, Ms. Lan and Ms. Shan, who claim to be strong supporters of the CLT approach, and who teach the same Comprehensive English Reading Course with the same textbooks, are selected in particular for detailed comparison and analysis in order to show similarities and differences between them in line with the principles of the CLT approach. The findings of this study show that the gap between what the teachers claim to be doing and what they actually do reflects not only their misconceptions about CLT, but also manifests the various challenges confronting them in adopting CLT in their English classes.

REFLECTION ON PRACTICE OF COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH IN CLASSROOM ENGLISH TEACHING IN RURAL AREAS

This article reports the results of the investigation on the practice of the Communicative Approach in classroom English teaching in rural areas in Hebei Province. Surprisingly, it turns out that most of the English teachers in rural areas fail to perform the Communicative Approach in their English classes. So this paper intends to present the results of the investigation, analyze the reasons for the failure of implementing the Communicative Approach in classroom English teaching, and discuss the implications of the findings.

THE ROLE OF GRAMMATICAL INSTRUCTION WITHIN COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING AMONG CHINESE ESL STUDENTS

这篇论文探讨了在加拿大接受英语学习的中国学生对于英语语法教学的认识看法及转变。加拿大的英语教学主要应用交际英语教学法。通过对15名在加拿大的中国留学生的采访,结果发现近一半的采访对象表示,交际英语教学法中的英语语法教学对于他们的英语交际能力的提高是大有裨益的,而另一部分学生则认为英语语法的学习已经不再重要。据此,作者针对中国国内的英语教学方法以及在海外的留学生的英语学习提出了一些观点及建议。
