Maxim population from the desert of Fukang, Xinjiang, were assessed by means of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. High genetic diversity and differentiation were revealed in the population of R soongorica by 15 random primers. One hundred and thirty-six individuals from seven subpopulations were sampled in the study. Seventy-one loci have been detected, and among them 69 were polymorphic. The mean proportion of polymorphic loci (PPB) was 97.18%. The analyses of Shannon information index (0.307 5), Nei's gene diversity (0.312 7) and G(ST)(0.312 0) indicated that there were more genetic variations within the subpopulations than those among the subpopulations. The results of AMOVA analysis showed that 61.58% of the genetic variations existed within subpopulations, and 38.02% among the subpopulations. The gene flow among the subpopulations of R soongorica (Nm = 1.102 8) was much less than that of the common anemophytes (Nm = 5.24), so genetic differentiation among the subpopulations occurred to some extent. Additionally, through the use of clustering and the correlation analyses, we found that the genetic structure of natural population of R soongorica was related to some ecological factors (soil factors mainly) of the oasis-desert transition zone. The genetic diversity level of R soongorica had negative correlation with the content of total soil P and Cl significantly (P < 0.05). On the contrary, it had significant positive correlation with CO32- (P < 0.05), showing that the distribution of the individuals of R soongorica in the sampled areas correlates with certain soluble salt. Furthermore, the genetic diversity of the natural population of R soongorica increased with the decreasing of the content of soil organic matters, water, total N and total P in soil. The paper concluded that the microenvironment ecological factors played an important role in the adaptive evolution of R soongorica population.展开更多

Based on determination of algal crusts with different successive ages (4-, 8-, 17-, 34-, 42-year-old) and unconsolidated sand in the desert area, species composition and clustering analyses were carried out in this study. Results on successional orientation revealed that (1) the abundance of Cyanophyta, specially of Scytonema javanicum gradually decreased; (2) the abundance of Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta and a species of Cyanophyta, Phormidium tenue increased; (3) the biodiversity increased gradually with the community succession; and (4) biomass of microalgae increased at the early stage, but decreased at the later stage due to the abundance of lichens and mosses. But, the speed of natural succession was so slow that the community-building species was still the first dominant species after 42 years, except that its dominant degree decreased just slightly. However, successive speed and trend were affected by water, vegetation coverage, terrain, time and soil physico-chemical properties as well, especially Mn content in the soil appeared to have a threshold effect.展开更多

[Method] Based on MODIS image data with the spatial res- olution of 1 km, 5 indicators which could reflect different desertification features were selected to conduct inversion. The desertification information of Hulun Buir region was extracted by decision tree classification. [Result] The desertification area of Hu- lun Buir region is 33 862 km2, accounting for 24% of the total area, and it is mainly dominated by sandiness desertification. Though field verification and mining point validation of high-resolution interpretation data, the overall accuracy of this evaluation is above 89%. [Conclusion] Evaluation method used in this study is not only effectively for large scale regional desertification monitoring but also has a better evaluation performance.展开更多

Saxoul seedlings maintained high transpiration when the soil moisture was above 11%. The seedlings were able to take up water from soil with above 6 % soil water content, which was the threshold level of soil moisture for seedlings. The relationship between transpiration and potential evaporation was linear for well-watered seedlings. The de-crease of soil water availability led to different degrees of down-regulation of stomatal conductance, leaf transpiration and net CO2 assimilation rate. The stomata played a relatively small part in determining the net CO2 assimilation rate for the same seedling. The relationship between net CO2 assimilation rate and transpiration was linear diurnally, and reduction scale of leaf transpiration was much bigger than that of net CO2 assimilation rate by waters tress treatments, therefore intrinsic wa-ter-use-efficiency increased. High evaporative demand increased the leaf transpiration but inhibited net CO2 assimilation rate. Because of the effect of VPD on transpiration in this region, the transpiration of well-watered and mild water stress seedlings becomes responsive to change in stomatal conductance over a wider range.展开更多

Plants adapted to moving sand conditions are able to reverse this process. They can stabilize die substrate. Not much data is available on the soil stabilization capacity of plants. This study was conducted to investigate the wind-induced sand displacement around plants in relation to their biomass. Sand displacement is examined in relation to the biomass allocation pattern of three different plant species. A new method was developed to experimentally investigate plant sand-binding capacity. The relationship between sand displacement and plant biomass was not linear. Apart from the amount of biomass, species-specific plant characters like the biomass allocation pattern and plant structure may be very important in determining the sand-binding capacity.展开更多

The results showed that barren lands in Lutian Town were exten- sive and the barren rate was as high as 48.6%. It is notable that the rate is in- creasing as farmer ages and education declines. It is proposed that forestry cooper- atives should be established and land management laws and rules can be formulated to promote mountainous area economy and forestland use.展开更多

The results show that the instabili- ty of average temperature in January and April increased, and the isothermal date in February was 10.36 d earlier from 1961 to 2013. The instability of extreme maxi- mum temperature in December and January improved. The instability of extreme minimum temperature in July instability also increased. The coefficient of variation of extreme minimum temperature in May was up to 287.3%. It is concluded that the instability of desert climate of Minqin County increased with global warming. The stability of climate is more worthy of attention.展开更多

[Method] The visual interpretation method was used to process TM/ETM+ image based on field work and investigation of Hotan Oasis. These interpretation dates have been reclassified to desert and oasis. Then, the driving mechanism of desertification and oasification was analyzed. [Result] The analysis indicated that the oasification velocity(91.24 km^2/year) was faster than the desertification’s(77.78 km^2/year),with a rapid growth of 5.59 km^2/year in oasis area in the mid-lower reaches of the Hotan River. [Coclusion] There existed spatial coupling linked by water consumption between oasification in the middle reaches and desertification in the lower reaches. And the changing trends were opposite not only for the oasis area, but also for the oasification area and oasification velocity between the middle and the lower reaches of the Hotan River Basin. With climatic warming, population growth, economical development, scientific and technological progress, and in particular the implementation of national policies, the cropland area increased and oasis expanded, speeding up the oasification and water consumption in the middle reaches. Hence it is urgent to prevent the Hotan Oasis from exacerbating the current water supply-demand imbalance and prohibit the expansion of arable land to transitional belt between oasis and desert.展开更多
