Lecturers’Efforts in Building Rapport in the English-Medium Instruction(EMI)Context:Focus on the Use of Communication Strategies

Past studies reveal the prevalence of anxiety,coupled with low motivation and disengagement among students in English-medium instruction(EMI)programs.Given the detrimental impact these negative emotions can have on learning outcomes,it is imperative that teachers establish positive emotional rapport with their students.This study explores how experienced and highly rated EMI lecturers at a Chinese university’s overseas campus use communication strategies to build rapport with their students during interactive academic activities.It identifies the strategies used by these lecturers and examines how the strategies facilitate the teaching-learning process.The data,consisting of 10 hours of tutorials and 10 hours of supervisor-student supervision meetings,is analyzed using an adapted Conversation Analysis(CA)approach.The analysis reveals three types of communication strategies(CSs)frequently used by lecturers:back-channeling,codeswitching,and co-creation of messages.By employing these strategies,the lecturers established a strong rapport with the students,which created an encouraging and supportive learning environment.Consequently,this positive atmosphere facilitated students’learning of content knowledge through English.The findings of this study have implications for the training of lecturers who encounter difficulties in establishing rapport with multilingual students in the EMI setting. 展开更多

This paper is a qualitative study of how and why English teachers in military academy use personal pronoun I and inclusive and exclusive we. Through analysis of teachers' use of/and we in the taped videos, some differences in the frequency use of inclusive we and exclusive we have been found and a number of effects the inclusive pronouns create are illustrated. Specifically, the paper reveals how 1 and we help teachers create a sense of authority in the classroom, showing how teachers are aligning with the students. Inclusive pronouns can act as a positive politeness device by imparting knowledge, organizing the contents, and highlighting the important and difficult points. It is noticed that there is fuzziness between inclusive personal pronoun and exclusive pronoun, which can be manipulated by the teacher to create authority or closeness with students. 展开更多

It plays crucial roles in giving instructions, organizing classroom norm, and facilitating students' language acquisition. Based on Leech's Politeness Principle, this paper has analyzed the politeness in teachers' classroom talk and explored the functions it possesses as well. The study shows that the politeness feature of college English teachers' classroom talk is the consequences of observing each maxim of the Politeness Principle and is of the functions such as making effective cornmnication, keeping friendly relations with students, saving students' face, etc.. Conducting research on politeness in teachers' talk is conducive to understanding the process of language teaching and learning. 展开更多

Students' Withdrawal of Teacher's Deposited Knowledge in Teacher-Dominated Classroom Talk

Prior studies on classroom discourse research often concluded that a teacher's control of classroom interaction greatly affected his/her students' response to classroom talk. Students as academic novices are often expected to accept the teacher's deposited knowledge for academic achievement in traditional school contexts. Given little attention being paid to their withdrawal of teacher's deposited knowledge for use as meaning-negotiation, this study observes one academically-irrelevant curriculum context----one free and non-compulsory adult Chinese class offered by one local Taiwan Residents government to its foreign residents--to know whether the students' motivation for responding to classroom talk is still affected much by the teacher's dominance of classroom talk. It employs Courtney Cazden's I-R-E (teacher-initiation, student-response, and teacher-evaluation) classroom talk model and Paulo Freire's banking education metaphor as theoretical frameworks to discuss the classroom power relations reflected on the students' withdrawal of the teacher's deposited knowledge. The findings show that when the students' academic achievement is not the instructional objective, the teacher's thematic control, affects the students' motivation for responding more than his/her control of classroom interaction. It concludes that a classroom talk highlighting the students' interest activates their participation and allows the instructor to gain access to the students' knowledge, values, attitudes, and perceptions. 展开更多

An Overview of the Development of Research on Public Speaking Course from 2004 to 2013

This research explores the studies published in English from 2004 to 2013 on the Public Speaking (PS) course to provide a preliminary framework of the research paradigm and identify its major themes and sub-themes i... This research explores the studies published in English from 2004 to 2013 on the Public Speaking (PS) course to provide a preliminary framework of the research paradigm and identify its major themes and sub-themes in this field. A maiority of the studies were from the communication literature, with the remaining studies coming from the disciplines of linguistics, education and psychology, which indicates research on PS is multidisciplinary. In the literature, the years 2004 and 2005 saw a peak of studies from native-speaking countries while the years 2011 and 2012 began to see an increase of the research from non-native speaking countries. Nearly half of the studies fell into the non-empirical category. With the method of content analysis and based on the research agenda in the public speaking proposed by Lucas (2011), seven themes were identified, including public speaking anxiety, goals of the public speaking course and pedagogical strategies, pedagogical content, course assessment, technology and integrative methods as pedagogy, PS textbooks, and adaptation of the course to non-native speakers. It is hoped that the findings here can contribute to refining research on PS course in China and providing insights for Chinese practitioners. 展开更多

If every Christian is a consecrated priest and has the right to administer the sacraments for himself, is there any necessity to retain a professional priesthood for the Church? While detailing how Luther's concept entailed the shift of clerical functions from a sacramental priesthood to a preaching ministry as occurred within the evolving Protestant Churches, this paper offers a clarification of what Luther actually meant by his formula. 展开更多
