A Corpus-Based Study on the Acquisition of the Modal Adverb Fanzheng by Foreign Learners of Chinese

This study investigates foreign learners' acquisition of the Chinese modal adverb fanzheng on the basis of interlanguage corpus. We find that the sentences written by foreign learners of Chinese (hereafter simplified as FLC) with the wordfanzheng are quite similar to those by Chinese native speakers in the distribution of the syntactic categories, semantic types, semantic functions, pragmatic or discourse functions. These characterize basically the wordfanzheng as one of the modal adverbs in such three aspects as syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Most of the FLCs study the basic meanings and typical contexts of the wordfanzheng at primary stage, and later the functions emphasizing reasons, summary or explaining, and then the function of textual cohesion at the intermediate and advanced stage. The main causes of errors reflect that the FLCs are not able to differentiate the usage offanzheng and that of other causal or adversative conjunctions. 展开更多

This paper investigates the interpersonal meanings in Chinese cosmetic advertising discourse from mood, modality and appraise the three aspects. Based on an exploratory study of data of six typical Chinese cosmetic advertising discourses, the paper claims that the distribution of mood and modality has close link with the interpersonal meaning in advertising. The context query is based on a resource description framework (RDF) dataset and SPARQL language. To discover collaborative associations, an approach of transforming RDF named graphs into "context graph" is proposed. First, the definitions of the importance of the nodes and the weight assignment for the "context graph" are given. Secondly, the implementation of a spread activation algorithm based on "context graph" is proposed. Gender in other Indo-European languages is a grammatical abstract notion, but English gender is a semantic concrete conception. English nouns can be divided into four categories: masculine, feminine, common and neuter. Gender genre of an English noun involves the choice of a pronoun that is employed to substitute it. Gender of the pronoun should be identical with its referent. However, the rule may be broken under special conditions. The English Middle Construction (EMC), as a piculiar syntactic structure, shares its semantic features, but diversifies in its syntactic configuration compared with other languages. This paper tries to have a contrast study of the Middle Construcitons between English and Chinese and find the two languages share the same semantic features that the incompatibility between the semantic quantitatives (SQs) of the Adverb (Adjunct in the syntactic term) and the SQs of the Verb denoted by the predicate of MC leads to the deactivization of the predicate by means of the Adjunct, functioning as a quantitative device, assign delimitation to the predicate, hence ensures the grammaticality of the construction. But syntatically, we agree that the NP Movement Approach accounts for the formation of EMC, while we argue in Chinese it is the verb raising that results in the MC. This paper first represents the structural representation of the English Middle Construction; then the structural analysis is elaborated in comparison with that in Chinese, based on the previous studies; and finally the motivations of the Ecs in the perspective of syntactic and semantic functions are explored and hence a new hypothesis is raised to probe the similar construction in Chinese. 展开更多

There are mainly 3 types of meaning model of polysemy, namely, radiation, concatenation and integrated model. According to prototype theory, in the semantic category formed by a polysemic word, category members are determined by prototype. They are the result of development from prototype to boundary. Connected by a network of overlapping similarities (i.e., family resemblances), category members present different degrees of prototypicality, but not all of them can represent the category. Only the prototype can fully embody the category. With the extension of the semantic category, the boundary of the category is fuzzy and begins to intersect another semantic category. 展开更多

The relative features are mined among English text phrases and sentences, the semantic relevance analysis and feature extraction of keywords in English abstract are realized, the association rules differentiation for English text summarization is obtained based on information theory, related semantic roles information in English Teaching Texts is mined. Text similarity feature is taken as the maximum difference component of two semantic association rule vectors, and combining semantic similarity information, the accurate extraction of English text Abstract is realized. The simulation results show that the method can extract the text summarization accurately, it has better convergence and precision performance in the extraction process. 展开更多

This article explores the potential resources of the Bakhtin's theory of dialogism and its core concepts for the development of the philosophy and methodology of the human sciences. Focusing on Bakhtin's late essays: "The Problem of the Text in Linguistics, Philology, and the Human Sciences; From Notes Made in 1970-71;" and "Toward a Methodology for the Human Sciences," the author deals with such concepts as sense, semantic whole, superaddressee, the third, and outsideness. Metalinguistics is interpreted as a philosophical approach to the problems of humanities methodology. The specifics of the human sciences, which Bakhtin put to the question, are described in comparison and correlation with the natural sciences. The author elaborates the idea of the communicative three-part relationship or trilogue (as a development of the dialogue). The role of the superaddressee as the third participant of the trilogue between the researcher (the subject) and the text (the object) is discussed. The notion semantic whole and its implementation in the process of the sense's becoming (development) are analyzed. 展开更多

This paper examines the expression of being from the syntactic perspective in the framework of Cassirer's philosophy of language in his Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. It first introduces the debate about the validity of the question of being between the logical and ontological perspectives, represented by J. S. Mill's attempt to annul the question and Heidegger's counter argument. It then moves to the syntactic perspective by using Aquinas' statement that in every apprehension being should be present, and then reconsiders the function of copula in a sentence. The main part of this article follows Cassirer's argument by picking up the so-called "war of the giants" between the Heraclitean flux and the Parmenidean immovable being in the context of language in Plato's three dialogues, namely Cratylus, Theaetetus, and Sophist. It then moves on to Cassirer's Kantian scheme of analysis to handle the Platonic question, and argues that words and sentences are different moments of unit formation in our consciousness. It concludes with Cassirer's argument of the priority of sentence over words, and that the concentration merely on the copula is a limited approach to the question. The purpose of this paper is to show Cassirer's contribution to the problem of being by shifting the attention from semantics to the syntax and by breaking new ground from neo-Kantianism, and offers an approach to understand the role of language in our knowledge of the objective world which is neither purely nominal nor realist. 展开更多

The virtual community of foreign language leaming can improve the sense of language authenticity in foreign language learning and improve the quality of foreign language teaching. A method of building a virtual community for foreign language learning is proposed based on data mining technology, data acquisition and feature preprocessing model for building semantic vocabulary of foreign language learning is constructed, the linguistic environment characteristics of the semantic vocabulary data of foreign language learning is analyzed, and the semantic noumenon structure model is obtained. Fuzzy clustering method is used for vocabulary clustering and comprehensive retrieval in the virtual community of foreign language learning, the performance of vocabulary classification in foreign language learning is improved, the adaptive semantic information fusion method is used to realize the vocabulary data mining in the virtual community of foreign language learning, information retrieval and access scheduling for virtual communities in foreign language learning are realized based on data mining results. The simulation results show that the accuracy of foreign language vocabulary retrieval is good, improve the efficiency of foreign language learning. 展开更多

Question answering is an important problem that aims to deliver specific answers to questions posed by humans in natural language.How to efficiently identify the exact answer with respect to a given question has become an active line of research.Previous approaches in factoid question answering tasks typically focus on modeling the semantic relevance or syntactic relationship between a given question and its corresponding answer.Most of these models suffer when a question contains very little content that is indicative of the answer.In this paper,we devise an architecture named the temporality-enhanced knowledge memory network(TE-KMN) and apply the model to a factoid question answering dataset from a trivia competition called quiz bowl.Unlike most of the existing approaches,our model encodes not only the content of questions and answers,but also the temporal cues in a sequence of ordered sentences which gradually remark the answer.Moreover,our model collaboratively uses external knowledge for a better understanding of a given question.The experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better performance than several state-of-the-art methods. 展开更多
