Possibility of Sea Water as Mixing Water in Concrete

In the near future, fresh water will be very difficult to get and scarce. It is said that in 2025 half of the mankind will live in the areas where fresh water is not enough. Also, UN and WMO （World Meteorological Organization） are predicting five billion people will be in short of even drinking water. Also, in the present, there are some areas where sea water or chloride contained sand are used as mixing water with or without intension. The authors believe that the possibilities of using sea water as mixing water in concrete should be investigated seriously. In this paper, the authors would like to show various possibilities of using sea water as mixing water in RC （reinforced concrete） members. The possibilities are shown as follows： （1） mixed with pozzolanic materials （Blast furnace slag powder, etc.） expecting to fix the free chloride ion; （2） Mixed with corrosion inhibitor; （3） reinforced with stainless steel or corrosion resistant reinforcement; and （4） used in very dry or submerged conditions.

From Sex Objects to Heroines A Tough Road for Female Characters in Video Games

Female character in video games is the one of the most controversial topic in game studies and nowadays women＇s anthropology. From the beginning of role in games＇ plot to sexualized graphical representation, woman in virtual world were （and sometimes still are） a point of discussion about characters sexualisation and role of female sex in virtual industry. The main aim of this paper is to present analysis of female representation in video games and how in last 30 years it has changed. In other words, how female characters were ennobled from sex object to main protagonist status. In presented research, there were used mostly the examples of popular video games with extended plot and world which can be explored by protagonists. Video game historiography, textual analysis （which helped to treat video game character as a protagonist）, and thematic analysis of video games were used as a main research method. The main conclusion of this paper is that female characters can overcome all gender or sexual stereotypes and even eventually became an icon of popular culture

The Garden of Finzi-Continis, Compassion, and the Struggle to Affirm Identity

This work investigates De Sica＇s depiction of compassion proposing new ways of examining the film. Remaining faithful to his neorealist responsibility to denounce the plight of others and the experience associated to World War Two, the director offers models of compassion associated with past circumstances and the subsequent recollection of them. In other instance, compassion becomes the result of imaginative and elaborated descriptions that contrast with the neorealist aesthetic. These creative depictions suggest compassion through technical elements. For instance, the usage of flashbacks, the long shots of the garden, the close-ups and tracking shots on specific components of the environment, the soft focus on certain characters are ways to reflect on past circumstances to outline a new awareness and perspective.

Development of a Low-Cost Weather Station to Measure in Situ Essential Climate Variables

A weather station is proposed especially designed for developing countries, and to meet the standards of the international scientific community making research on the earth system. The station would measure in situ several ECV （essential climate variables）. These data may enable an agricultural breakthrough in countries lacking meteorological infrastructure, help in climate change monitoring, and facilitate diffusion of wind energy. A pre-feasibility analysis is presented. It appears interesting that the station is supplied by a social enterprise. A research to establish the best shelter design using computational fluid dynamics is also reported. The criterion is the accuracy with which the surface air temperature is reproduced inside the shelter. A design following recommendations by the WMO （World Meteorological Organization）, a smaller design with identical geometry, and two alternative small designs are analyzed. All four designs are simulated in PVC, natural rubber and wood, with and without white paint coating. The smaller shelters perform better. The influence of the material, dimensions and design is smaller than that of the white paint. Shelters made of PVC or rubber, and/or in alternative designs, may be more interesting if other criteria are considered, like whether logistics, manufacturing, etc. are more sustainable, easier and/or cheaper.

A Corpus-Driven Analysis of Image Construction of BRIC Bank from Mainstream Media＇s Perspective-- A Case Study of China Daily

Despite the fact that BRIC Bank was instituted to enhance the core competitiveness of developing countries, opponents concern it would undermine the status of the World Bank and incurred negative impact. However, as China is one of initiated countries of the BRIC nations, domestic mainstream media witnessed widespread coverage to justify Bank＇s roles. Therefore, this paper, based on Halliday＇s Meta-language Function theory, intends to explore the significance of BRIC Banks from the perspective of domestic mainstream media. Meanwhile, the thesis, combining with corpus research tools and VRIN standard theory （namely Valuable, Rare, Imperfectly, Imitable, Non-Substitutable）, probes into image construction and interprets roles of BRIC Bank in mainstream reports.

The Symbols of the Fire in Georgian Folklore in Comparison With Global Experience

Fire is the world meaning symbol of wisdom, purification. Elements of place symbolism associated with fire are day time and specifically noon when the sun＇s light and heat is the greatest. The association with the sun makes fire an above space phenomena rather than a below or within space phenomena. The fireplaces have the same meaning for the houses like the sun for the earth. This paper is divided in several topics to show how the fire changes its meaning and how do peoples attitude to fire can be changed. Fire can represents in wedding ceremony, fire out of control makes chaos, destroying around everything from which arise the new life, and fire make the soul to be free from the sin. Fire, the eternal flame is the symbol of strong emotional feelings. The purpose of the paper is to give the interesting examples of fire symbols in Georgian folklore and make some similarities with world experiences. Georgian people as a part of ancient world make their own culture and in order to integrate Georgian materials in world cultural fund paper aims to make comparative work to achieve the main goal.

Probing Into the It-World： A Thematic Study of Wise Blood

Based on Martin Buber＇s theory of ＂Ontology of Between＂, the present paper tries to analyze the unfathomable themes in Wise Blood and argues that the world of Wise Blood （1968） is a highly commercialized society filled with spiritual blindness, moral degeneration, and social corruption. In keeping with O＇Conner＇s artistic creations, the more disgusting the It-world in Wise Blood is represented to the readers, the more palpable her implication becomes that such a world needs the necessary and urgent spiritual redemption.

The Disastrous Lifeworld： A Phenomenological Consideration of Safety, Resilience, and Vulnerability

The lifeworld is, according to Husserl, the horizon of all our experiences, in the sense that it is the background environment of human being＇s competences, practices, and attitudes. The lifewofld is the intersubjective, pre-given in the ontie sense, and immediately perceived world of everyday life. Although Husserl has distinguished the lifeworld from the objective world that natural science describes with mathematical methods, we cannot divide the world on the practical level into the perceived world of ordinary life and the scientific world. The characteristic of human beings is that they live in the environment which they have enormously changed. Modem science has accelerated this tendency： the contemporary world is constructed so deeply scientifically and technologically. Accordingly, as Ulrich Beck pointed out, the risk of the technologically constructed world is often invisible/unperceivable. The disaster at Fukushima nuclear power plants is a terrible testament of this kind of risk. In order for a land to become the lifeworld of meaningful human interactions, the land should be first of all safe and livable for all of us. The risk calculation made by Tokyo Electric Power Company was shown to be sloppy and deceptive. The contemporary techno-science should be democratically governed and watched by all kinds of stakeholders, and never be left it to the specialists of science. For re-establishing the livable and sustainable lifeworld, safety, resilience, and vulnerability should be the fundamental values. And, the autonomy of the local residents, including the most vulnerable people, through the democratization of the techno-science must be the fundamental value to establish and protect such a safe environment.

In the Labyrinth of Memory Cultural Representations About the Warsaw Rising of 1945 in Polish Film and Media Narration

The Warsaw Uprising is one of the events key to understanding not only the history of Poland but also Central Europe and World War II. The Uprising shows that the war was not a simple fight of good against evil （as it often perceived in Western Europe） but that in fact three sides, each with different goals, were involved--two totalitarian systems and the world of Western democracies. Memory is a phenomenon that is directly related to the present; our perception of the past is always influenced by the present. The aim of the author＇s presentation is to examine how the collective memory of Polish people about the Warsaw Rising was changing. The author would argue that the remembrance of this event is situated between the communicative memory and cultural memory. To prove it, the author will examine two movies： Sewer （1956） by Andrzej Wajda, Eroica （1956） by Andrzej Munk, and the narrative exhibition of the Warsaw Rising Museum.

Safe Space of Ideology

Our studies about safety in society lead us to the most popular book by Karl Mannheim： Ideology and Utopia. This work envisages the discrepancies between social knowledge and the material world itself. The crucial conclusion reads as follows： Our image of reality is mostly based on our interests and desires and does not rely on thorough research. There are two types of such representations： utopia and ideology. The first of them, less interesting for us, is the type of ideas which can revolutionize a social being. The second one is a particular set of visions which can never be realized but on the other hand they act as common knowledge （general knowledge of the world）--stabilizing the social structure by presenting it with a holistic image of the world. Taking the above into consideration, how is it possible that representations, being so distant from reality （creating a completely separate ＂world＂）, basically enable efficient functioning in it？ Ideology, being the foundation of the society＇s functioning space, should always be tautological, in the sense that for the participants of the given world＇s image （creation as it is）, it should define the being in a comprehensive and adequate way （in Thomas Aquinas spirit）. What is more, it would always be true. We should also mention that the main tools of ideology, understood this way, are specific definitions and the extrapolation of sense. The purpose of this lecture is to prove that it is possible for ideology to come to life, only when the individuals who acknowledge it will consider their image of reality proper. The above ideological system should be understood as the obviousness of description of the surrounding world which in return makes unreflective functioning in reality possible. This obviousness of the presented world will be referred to as social safety.

Language Attitude Education as ICC Facilitation: An Explorative Class

This paper reports the design, implementation, and outcome of an action research. The research aimed to examine and improve college students＇ attitudes towards varieties of World Englishes through a mild intervention in an intercultural communication class. Viewing education as a means to facilitate Intercultural Communication Competence （ICC）, of which language attitude was an integral part, the study designed a four-step pedagogical intervention to help students become more open and critical of their attitudes. The four pedagogical steps included language attitude elicitation, deconstruction, reconstruction, and creative solutions to communicative problems. The study found that students largely had conservative language attitudes and prejudices to start with. After the intervention, over 40% of the students acquired more open language attitudes, while some remained ambivalent about embracing linguistic diversity, and a small number of students maintained their previous conservative attitudes. Challenges of attitude change and language attitude education are discussed.

Analysis on gust factor of tropical cyclone strong wind over different underlying surfaces

Based on one year gradient wind data and the wind data of a strong typhoon observed by three meteorological towers located on the coast and at the inshore sea,the underlying surfaces of the meteorological towers were classified and the roughness lengths were calculated quantitatively.On the basis of strong wind characteristic representative assessment and sample selection on the wind data of strong typhoon Hagupit,the gust factor variation characteristics of tropical cyclones under different underlying surfaces were analyzed.The observed fact and variation rule were found as follows:1) The roughness lengths under neutral atmospheric condition which were calculated using logarithmic wind profile fitting based on the observation data can describe the slight change of the underlying surface objectively.2) The gust factor of strong typhoon wind didn't have variation trends with wind speed.But the variation amplitude of the gust factor was rather large over rough underlying surface which had pronounced effect on the numerical design of structural engineering.3) The variation of the gust factor with height satisfied power law or logarithmic law.The power law fitting was more suitable for smooth underlying surface while the logarithmic fitting was better over rough underlying surface.4) The observation data also suggested that the relationship between gust factor and roughness length can be described by power or linear equation.5) The gust factor observed in this typhoon case was different from the gust factor recommended by WMO:The gust factor of the offshore wind came from rough underlying surface was higher than the value recommended by WMO while the gust factor of the onshore wind came from smooth underlying surface is less than the WMO recommended value.

EPIDEMICS ON SMALL WORLDS OF TREE-BASED WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

Due to link additions, small world phenomena exist in tree-based wireless sensor networks. Epidemics on small worlds of tree-based networks are studied, and the epidemic threshold at which the outbreak of the epideIrlic occurs is calculated. Epidemiological processes are analyzed when the infection probability is larger than the percolation threshold. Although different epidemiological processes occur on the underlying tree topology, the number of infected nodes increases exponentially as the infection spreads. The uniform immunization procedure is conducted in the homogeneous small-world network. The infection still extends exponentially Mthough the immunization effectively reduces the prevalence speed.

Aiming at the storage and management problems of massive remote sensing data,this paper gives a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics and advantages of thirteen data storage centers or systems at home and abroad. They mainly include the NASA EOS,World Wind,Google Earth,Google Maps,Bing Maps,Microsoft TerraServer,ESA,Earth Simulator,GeoEye,Map World,China Centre for Resources Satellite Data and Application,National Satellite Meteorological Centre,and National Satellite Ocean Application Service. By summing up the practical data storage and management technologies in terms of remote sensing data storage organization and storage architecture,it will be helpful to seek more suitable techniques and methods for massive remote sensing data storage and management.

A Two-step Approach to Progressive Collapse Analysis of Building Structures under Blast Loading

Structural collapse under blast loads is a very complex process. For several decades, the engineering profession has considered some approaches to analyze the essential physics of collapse phenomena. Recently, the interest in this topic has risen to an apex since the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. A two-step analysis approach to capture the characteristics of structural collapse during explosions is proposed. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the performance of the presented approach.
