AIM:To evaluate the diagnostic value of endoscopy in patients with gastrointestinal graft-versus-host disease (GI GVHD). METHODS:We identified 8 patients with GI GVHD following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell trans-plantation (HSCT). GVHD was defined histologically as the presence of gland apoptosis, not explained by other inflammatory or infectious etiologies. RESULTS:The symptoms of GI GVHD included anorexia, nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, GI bleeding, etc. Upper endoscopic appearance varied from subtle mucosal edema, hyperemia, erythema to obvious erosion. Colonoscopic examination showed diffuse edema, hyperemia, patchy erosion, scattered ulcer, sloughing and active bleeding. Histological changes in GI GVHD included apoptosis of crypt epithelial cells, dropout of crypts, and lymphocytic infiltration in epithelium and lamina propria. The involvement of stomach and rectocolon varied from diffuse to focal. CONCLUSION:Endoscopy may play a significant role in early diagnosis of GI GVHD patients following allogeneic HSCT, and histologic examination of gastrointestinal biopsies is needed to confirm the final diagnosis. 展开更多

The incidence and prevalence of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), the two major forms of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), are rising in western countries. The modern hygienic lifestyle is probably at the root of a disease where, in genetically susceptible hosts, the intestinal commensal flora triggers dysregulated immune and inflammatory responses. Current therapies ranging from anti-inflammatory drugs to immunosuppressive regimens, remain inadequate. Advances in our understanding of the cell populations involved in the pathogenetic processes and recent findings on the regenerative, trophic and immunoregulatory potential of stem cells open new paths in IBD therapy. Hematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells are catalyzing the attention of IBD investigators. This review highlights the pivotal fi ndings for stem cell-based approaches to IBD therapy and collects the encouraging results coming in from clinical trials. 展开更多

Objective To provide novel spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) findings of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease as well as new insights into the pathogenesis of this disease. Methods Detailed SD OCT and fluorescein angiography (FA) findings of 18 consecutive VKH patients (11 women and 7 men) from December 2007 to April 2009 who were in acute uveitic stage at presentation were reviewed. All the patients had been followed up for at least 6 months with reevaluation(s) of SD OCT performed in 10 patients. Results Intraretinal cysts were found to be located in various layers of the outer retina. In addition to the photoreceptor layer, they could also be found between the outer plexiform layer and the outer nuclear layer, or spanning the external limiting membrane. On FA, intraretinal cysts could be hypofluorescent, normofluorescent, or hyperfluorescent. Some intraretinal cysts had a characteristic FA pattern, in which a small round hypofluorescent area was surrounded by a ring of hyperfluorescence (donut-shaped dye pooling). Subretinal fibrinoid deposit appeared in acute uveitic stage in two severe VKH patients and seemed to develop from subretinal exudates and evolved into typical subretinal fibrosis. Gradual transfiguration/migration and progressive proliferation/pigmentation of the subretinal fibrinoid deposit/subretinal fibrosis was observed in one patient. Conclusions Intraretinal cysts could form in various layers of the outer retina and may result from extension of choroidal inflammation. Subretinal fibrosis may develop from subretinal exudates in VKH patients and may cause substantial visual impairment. 展开更多

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube complications can be serious or life threatening. Retrograde intussusception is a very rare complication of PEG tubes with only 9 cases reported in the literature. We describe a case of retrograde intussusception, associated with the use of a Foley catheter as a replacement gastrostomy tube, presenting with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of PEG-related retrograde intussusception successfully managed in a non-surgical manner. Retrograde intussusception likely occurred due to migration of the replacement tube with resultant securing and invagination of the proximal jejunum when the gastrostomy tube was anchored to the abdominal wall. 展开更多

Carbon nanotube thin film transistor (CNT-TFF) is an emerging technology for future macroelectronics, such as chemical and biological sensors, optical detectors, and the backplane driving circuits for flat panel displays. The mostly reported fabrication method of CNT-TFT is a lift-off based photolithography process. In such fabrication process, photoresist (PR) residue contaminates the interface of tube-metal contact and deteriorates the device performance. In this paper, ultraviolet ozone (UVO) and oxygen plasma treat- ments were employed to remove the PR contamination. Through our well-designed experiments, the UVO treatment is confirmed an effective way of cleaning contamination at the tube-metal interface, while oxygen plasma treatment is too reactive and hard to control, which is not appropriate for CNT-TFTs. It is determined that 2-6 rain UVO treatment is the preferred window, and the best optimized treatment time is 4 rain, which leads to 15% enhancement of device performance. 展开更多

Erythropoiesis is a process during which multipotential hematopoietic stem cells proliferate, differentiate and eventually form mature erythrocytes. Interestingly, unlike most cell types, an important feature of erythropoiesis is that following each mitosis the daughter cells are morphologically and functionally different from the parent cell from which they are derived, demonstrating the need to study erythropoiesis in a stage-specific manner. This has been impossible until recently due to lack of methods for isolating erythroid cells at each distinct developmental stage. This review summarizes recent advances in the development of methods for isolating both murine and human erythroid cells and their applications. These methods provide powerful means for studying normal and impaired erythropoiesis associated with hematological disorders. 展开更多
