In the current data-intensive era, the traditional hands-on method of conducting scientific research by exploring related publications to generate a testable hypothesis is well on its way of becoming obsolete within just a year or two. Analyzing the literature and data to automatically generate a hypothesis might become the de facto approach to inform the core research efforts of those trying to master the exponentially rapid expansion of publications and datasets. Here, viewpoints are provided and discussed to help the understanding of challenges of data-driven discovery.

SEVERAL NEW TYPES OF FINITE-DIFFERENCE SCHEMES FOR SHALLOW-WATER EQUATION WITH INITIAL-BOUNDARY VALUE AND THEIR NUMERICAL EXPERIMENT

This paper proposed several new types of finite-difference methods for the shallow water equation in absolute coordinate system and put forward an effective two-step predictor-corrector method, a compact and iterative algorithm for five diagonal matrix. Then the iterative method was used for a multi-grid procedure for shallow water equation. A t last, an initial-boundary value problem was considered, and the numerical results show that the linear sinusoidal wave would successively evolve into conoidal wave.

Experimental study on the compression-shear performance of a new-type circumferential joint of shield tunnel

To investigate the compression-shear behavior of a new circumferential joint based on the sleeve-straight bolt combination type connection of large-diameter shield tunnels,a series of full-scale joint experiments was carried out.In the process of the experiment,more attention was paid to the specimen displacement,bolt stress and joint damage mode.On the basis of these experiment phenomena,this study discussed the compression-shear bearing process of the new connector,analyzed the damage mode of the joint structure,and finally evaluated the performance of the new connector.It is found that the bearing process of the joint can be divided into four stages:the transitional stage for overcoming the friction of the concrete,the sleeve bearing stage for the sleeve bearing shear loads alone,the combined bearing stage for bearing shear loads by the connector system,and the structural damage stage for structural instability and damage.Generally speaking,affected by connector position and hand hole,the positive compression-shear stiffness of the joint is less than the negative compression-shear stiffness,and the positive shear strength of the joint is greater than the negative shear strength.The increase of longitudinal axial force will improve the compression-shear performance of the joint.The relationship between longitudinal axial force and joint stiffness is a logarithmic function.The use of new type of connector can effectively improve the compression-shear stiffness of joints under low shear loads,but the application of straight bolts will lose part of the strength performance.

New Criticism is an approach to literature which was developed by a group of American critics,most of whom taught at southern universities during the years following the First World War.The New Critics wanted to avoid impressionistic criticism,which risked being shallow and arbitrary,and social/historical approaches which might easily be subsumed by other disciplines.Thus,they attempted to systematize the study of literature,to develop an approach which was centered on the rigorous study of the text itself.They were given their name by John Crowe Ransom,who describes the new American formalists in The New Criticism(1941).

Different literary criticism theories have paved the way to analyse and evaluate the literature works from various per?spectives. In the last century, especially during the 1940s to the 1960s, the New Criticism almost dominated the literature analysis field. However, in the 1970s and early 1980s, a kind of literary criticism theory which maintained that the personal biases could largely affect the interpretation of the literature work and all history could be subjective seized the literature critic's eyeballs. And the appearance of New Historicism marked a vital transition of literature criticism theories. By analyzing the historicity of texts and the textuality of history, New Historicism does not set a clear distinction between history and literature.New Historicism mainly connects the texts and history and puts an end to the texts isolation. By figuring out the origin of New Historicism, trying to analyse the historicity and textuality thoroughly in this literature criticism theory, and exploring the disputes over this theory, the origins, concepts,historicity and textualityof New Historicism will be clarified.
