From a scientific point of view, however, major methodological drawbacks can arise when trying to arrive at a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of the decision usefulness of financial reports. In this conceptually-based exploratory study, the authors construct a 33-item index aimed at operationalizing decision usefulness in terms of the fundamental and enhancing qualitative characteristics laid out in the conceptual framework (CF) of the IASB (2010). Using a matched-pairs sample design, which includes 70 UK annual reports and 70 US 10-K reports for 2010, the results of test-retest and inter-rater reliability tests show that these multiple items, which were based on items used in previous research, can be measured in a reliable manner. At the same time, the results of an exploratory factor analysis indicate that the IASB qualitative characteristics cannot be measured separately when the 33-item index is applied. At an aggregate level, the results of paired-sample t-tests reveal that UK reports score on average higher than US 10-K reports, which suggests that the overall quality of UK reports is better. The findings of this study add to the existing literature on the empirical evaluation of the effects of international accounting standards, showing that, as compared with 10-K reports, UK annual reports provide more information on topics such as corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate governance, and annual bonus schemes. On the other hand, US reports outperform UK reports with respect to the content of fair value information, cash flow statements, off-balance financing, and audit reporting.展开更多

This study analyzed the annual reports of 100 NPOs registered with the Registry of Society (ROS) under the charity and religious categories. The objectives of this study are: (1) to determine the current state of reporting practices by NPOs; and (2) to describe the contents of a set of annual reports and the financial statement presentation of NPOs. This study found that there were variations in reporting practices among the charity and religious categories of NPOs. On average, the results show that NPOs do not focus on the disclosing information required by the ROS, the governing body of NPOs. This indicates that the regulators need to strongly practice enforcement to strengthen the compliance of the annual reports submission. Overall, the findings of this study provide useful information to regulators as a basis for preparing and presenting NPOs' annual report framework in the future.展开更多

Companies release non-financial information concerned with corporate sustainability issues like market share, customer loyalty, supply chain management, corporate governance, and human resources in annual reports as well as the audited financial reports. Annual reports, one of the important instruments of transparency and disclosure, are widely used by shareholders and stakeholders. Recent laws and regulations in the US, European Union, and Turkey require enhanced disclosures in annual reports. In the first part of this study, a comparative regulatory framework for annual reports will be established under the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing requirements, the New Turkish Commercial Code, and regulations of Capital Markets Board (CMB) of Turkey. In the second part of this study, annual reports of four sample companies listed in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Corporate Governance Index of Borsa Istanbul will be discussed in the light of disclosure requirements of Form 20-F. Findings of this study support the hypothesis which states that regulatory environment has a positive impact on the quantity and quality of disclosures. Attention is drawn to the need for global standardization to reduce the reporting variances and the need for independent audit of annual reports to increase the reliability.展开更多

With an increasing number of cytostatic treatment agents, the criteria to determine patient response to Phase I treatment has become harder to define. Physicians are increasingly looking to patient-reported outcomes (PROs) such as quality of life (QOL) to help evaluate treatment response. Electronic daily diary (EDD) devices can be used by patients to report their QOL over extended periods of time, thereby providing a more accurate picture of how patients are affected by treatment on a daily basis. However, questions remain about how to integrate this patient-reported information into decisions about Phase I treatment. This study investigated how physicians use patients’ daily QOL reports to evaluate patient response to Phase I treatment. Data were collected over a 4-month period from Phase I patients (N = 30) and physicians (N = 3) in an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center. Patients completed daily QOL reports using EDD devices and physicians were provided with a summary of patients’ QOL before each visit. After the visit, doctors recorded their treatment decision and also rated the importance of four biomedical factors (Toxicity, Imaging, Labs, and Performance Status) and QOL in their treatment decision for that visit. Although physicians rated QOL as being very important in evaluating treatment response, in practice, when predictors of their decisions were analyzed, results showed they relied exclusively on biomedical data (Toxicity, Imaging) to make Phase I treatment decisions. Questions remain about the utility and effective integration of QOL and biomedical data in clinical decision-making processes in Phase I clinical trials.展开更多

文摘BACKGROUND Meta-analysis,a form of quantitative review,is an attempt to combine data from multiple independent studies to improve statistical power.Because of the complexity of process involved in study selection, data analysis, and evaluation of bias and heterogeneity, checklists have been prepared by the Institutes of Medicine(IOM),Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Metaanalyses(PRISMA),and Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology(MOOSE)to standardize the reporting quality of a meta-analysis.AIM To use these checklists to assess the reporting quality of the coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)meta-analysis literature relevant to laboratory hematology.METHODS After a search of the literature 19 studies were selected for analysis, including 10 studies appearing in the preprint literature(studies that can be identified by database search but have not yet completed peer review).RESULTS The average IOM(76%of required elements completed),PRISMA(75%of required elements completed),and MOOSE(60%of required elements completed)scores enumerated demonstrated a reporting quality inferior to that of earlier reports of pathology and medicine meta-analyses.There was no statistically significant difference in performance between accepted/published and preprint studies.Comparison of the results of PRISMA and MOOSE studies demonstrated a weak positive correlation(Pearson’s correlation coefficient=0.39).CONCLUSION The most common deficits in the studies included sensitivity analysis, assessment for bias, and details of the search strategy.Although the COVID-19 laboratory hematology meta-analysis literature can be a helpful source of information, readers should be aware of these reporting quality deficits.

文摘BACKGROUND As a significantly important part of clinical practice, the professional nursing process can be advanced in many ways.Despite the fact that case reports are regarded to be of a lower quality grade in the hierarchy of evidence, one of the principles of evidence-based medicine is that decision-making should be based on a systematic summary of evidence. However, the evidence on the reporting characteristics of case reports in the nursing field is deficient.AIM To use the CARE guidelines to assess reporting quality and factors influencing the quality of case reports in the nursing field.METHODS Nursing science citation indexed(SCI-indexed)journals were identified from the professional website. Each of the identified journals was searched on their website for articles published before December 2017.Twenty-one sub-items on the CARE checklist were recorded as“YES”,“PARTLY”,or“NO”according to information reported by the included studies. The responses were assigned corresponding scores of 1,0.5,and 0,respectively.The overall score was the sum of the 21 sub-items and was defined as“high”(more than 15),“medium”(10.5 to 14.5),and“low”(less than 10).The means, standard deviations, odds ratios(OR),and the associated 95%confidence interval(CI)were determined using Stata 12.0 software.RESULTS Ultimately,184 case reports from 16 SCI-indexed journals were identified, with overall scores ranging from 6.5 to 18(mean=13.6±2.3).Of the included case reports,10.3%were regarded low-quality,52.7%were considered middle-quality,and 37%were regarded high-quality.There were statistical differences in the mean overall scores of the included case reports with funding versus those without funding(14.2±1.7 vs 13.6±2.4,respectively;P=0.4456)and journal impact factor<1.8 versus impact factor≥1.8(13.3±2.3 vs 13.6±2.4,respectively;P=0.4977).Five items from the CARE guidelines,5a(Patient),6(Clinical findings),8c(Diagnostic reasoning),9(Therapeutic intervention),and 11d(The main take-away lessons)were well-reported(Reporting rate more than 90%)in most of the included case reports. However, only three items,2(Keywords,OR=0.42,95%CI:0.19-0.92,P=0.03),4(Introduction,OR=0.35,95%CI:0.15-0.83,P=0.017),and 11b(The relevant medical literature,OR=0.19,95%CI:0.06-0.56,P=0.003)were considered better-reported after the CARE guidelines published in 2013.CONCLUSION The reporting quality of case reports in the nursing field apparently has not improved since the publication of the CARE guidelines.
文摘Majority of the patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer(NSCLC)experience two or more disease related symptoms, which may have a negative impact on their health-related quality of life(HR QOL).These patients prefer a therapy that would improve disease related symptoms,as opposed or treatment that slightly prolongs their survival without improving symptoms. The improvements of the symptoms augment the significance of improved response rates or progression free survivals. The choice of the questionnaires to evaluate patients-reported outcomes(PROs)and HRQOL benefits and methods of collecting the data and their interpretations are very important and are discussed in this manuscript.PROs and HR QOL outcomes are important in patients with advanced NSCLC only when the data are collected and analyzed correctly. Then they can be viewed as components of the total value of a treatment, providing a comprehensive picture of the benefits and risks of anticancer therapies.Enabling the patients to feel during the last months of their lives more comfortable and not be dependent on their loved ones is a very important task in the treatment of advanced NSCLC.

文摘Based on investigation data on PHC in Jiaozhou Bay, China from 1979 to 1983, the monthly, seasonal and annual variations of PHC content in Jiaozhou Bay were studied. The results showed that from 1979 to 1983, Jiaozhou Bay was polluted by PHC seriously and then slightly in spring and summer, while Jiaozhou Bay was polluted by PHC slightly in autumn. During 1979 -1983, PHC content in the water body of Jiaozhou Bay decreased year by year, and it was close to the background value gradually. Moreover, the reduction was obvious in spring and summer but very slight in autumn. Therefore, the water quality of Jiaozhou Bay became better.

文摘For cancer patients on Phase I trials, one of the most important physician decisions is whether or not patients are deriving benefit from therapy. Questions remain about the utility and effective integration of QOL and biomedical data in clinical decision-making processes in Phase I clinical trials.
