文章简要回顾"rhetoric"研究的发展演变过程并探讨"演讲论辩修辞"的定义扩展问题,提出把演讲论辩修辞从"语辞"研究中分离出来,在我国已经成熟的修辞理论指导下进行更深层次的研究的必要性。文章将演讲论辩修辞的定义扩展为:演讲者针对一定的语境,在充分了解自身性格特点和听众心理期盼的基础上,恰当地调整目光交流、面目表情、手势、站姿等态势语和谋篇、成段、锻句、选词、设格等言辞调整手段来说服听众或者给听众传达各种信息的言语活动。

Advertisements are penetrating into our daily life.Rhetorical strategies are always employed for persuasion in advertisements.The article analyzes the advertisements from the rhetorical angle mainly using the theory of "communication triangle".It is very interesting to see how the advertisement applies the appropriate strategies to attain the proper targets.

The Compatibility of Pragmatic Twist and Rhetoric

It is universally believed that Rhetoric is an expressive way of language, while pragmatic twist(Deliberate misinterpretation) isthe understanding phenomenon, which is not a rhetorical device but a cognitive activity in nature. Teaching Writing Contrastively： Contrastive Rhetoric in the Teaching of Writing

Writing fluently and expressively in English is a necessary skill for communication, as well as a required skill for Chinese students at the tertiary level. Since college students have already been trained on their Chinese writing skills for a considerable length of time and are able to write in Chinese quite successfully, the application of contrastive rhetoric in the teaching of English writing is very effective. Quentin Skinner＇s ＂Rhetorical Turn＂ and the Chances for Political Thought

Quentin Skinner＇s work since his turn to rhetoric has not been extensively discussed. My thesis is that with this turn Skinner has invented another novelty in the study of political thought, by including the analysis of the rhetoric of debating pro et contra among political agents as sources of political thought. The exemplary institution for such debates is the Westminster Parliament, and Skinner extends the analysis of the rhetorical culture of English Renaissance to studies on parliamentary debates. Here I am first comparing Skinner＇s The Foundations of Modern Political Thought and Reason and Rhetoric in the Philosophy of Hobbes in their relationship to rhetoric. Subsequently I discuss Skinner＇s comments on English parliamentary debates, including his recommendation to read Hobbes＇s Leviathan ＂as a speech in Parliament.＂ Reason and Rhetoric has inspired valuable studies on English Renaissance political rhetoric, shortly discussed here. For the understanding of the distinct parliamentary variety of deliberative rhetoric, I refer to the formation of a specific parliamentary procedure and to procedural tracts from sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Westminster, which among others create a parliamentary vocabulary and rules for conducting and regulating parliamentary debates. The parliamentary procedure institutionalizes the principle of in utramque partem disputare, central in Skinner＇s rhetorical studies. By this manner we can re-activate the link between political thought and parliamentary studies as well as explicate a dissensual alternative to Jiirgen Habermas＇s views on the political thought studies and parliamentary debates.

Cicero's Rhetoric vs.Baumgarten's Aesthetics:A Small Comparison of Decorum of Cicero With Magnitudo of Baumgarten

This paper made a comparison of Cicero’s Rhetoric with Baumgarten’s Aesthetics,for answering the question of how Baumgarten built the system of ars aesthetica on the basis of Cicero’s rhetoric.The paper demonstrated how Baumgarten’s key ideas of pulchritudo and magnitudo were related with Cicero’s decorum and modus concepts.Baumgarten’s magnitudo originated in Cicero’s modus.Baumgarten,however,differentiated the idea pulchritudo from the Cicero’s decorum for approaching the issue of pulchritudo ipsa.

Collectivism and Collective Ethos in Classical Chinese Rhetoric

The paper explores two aspects in classical Chinese rhetoric： collectivism and collective ethos. It looks closely at some of the key notions, like harmony, face, and cheng-yan （诚言） to show how the spirit of collectivism drives Chinese rhetoric on a path different from its Western counterpart, which is defined as an art of persuasion characteristic of personal endeavors.

The Rehabilitation of Rhetoric in Gadamer’s Philosophical Hermeneutics

The interrelation of rhetoric and hermeneutics is rooted in our existential historicity and linguisticity.Rhetorical competence and education are integral approaches to a better understanding of being-in-the-world.Inspired by Platonic dialectic and Aristotle’s phronesis,Gadamer has redefined true rhetoric and revived the epistemological and ethical dimensions in rhetoric in his philosophical hermeneutics.This article investigates four aspects in Gadamer’s rehabilitation of rhetoric.First,rhetoric as ethics.Rhetoric transcends the dualism of self-other,subject-object through its dialogical structure,and is composed of understanding and application as a whole in hermeneutic experience.Second,rhetoric as discursive knowledge.Rhetoric is oriented to eine Sache(reality)itself,and is endowed with primitive experience of truth.Its own validity as discursive knowledge is not confined to scientific methodology,and is essential for natural and human sciences.Third,rhetoric as component of linguisticity.The ubiquity of rhetoric makes it an integral component of linguisticity.The capacity to use metaphors,symbols,allegory is an important aspect of our linguisticity,revealing the rhetorical quality in language.Lastly,hermeneutic theories inspired by rhetoric.Gadamer’s rehabilitation of rhetoric is beneficial for the development of philosophical hermeneutics and humanist education in modern world.
