The characteristics of powders prepa...A self-invented atomization process, in which molten metal is atomized into powder by a high-velocity gas stream carrying solid particles as the atomization medium, was introduced. The characteristics of powders prepared by common gas atomization and dual-phase flow atomization under similar conditions were compared. The experimental results show that the dual-phase flow-atomized powders have average particle sizes that are one-half that of the common gas-atomized particles;additionally, they possess a finer microstructure and higher cooling rate under the same atomization gas pressure and the same gas flow. The Weber number in the crash criteria of liquid atomization is adopted to measure the crash ability of the atomization media. The Weber number of the dual-phase flow atomization medium is the sum of that of the gas and the solid particles. Furthermore, the critical equation of the crash model in dual-phase flow atomization is established, and the main regularities associated with this process were analyzed.展开更多

Methods Thermosensitive in situ gels of penciclovir were prepared through combination of ...Aim To develop pluronic F127 (PF127) based formulations of penciclovir (PCV) aimed at enhancing its ocular bioavailability. Methods Thermosensitive in situ gels of penciclovir were prepared through combination of HPMC K4M or carbopol 934P and pluronic F127. Optimized formulations were examined through measuring gelation temperature, rheology speciality, drug release behavior, pharmacokinetics and ocular irritation. Results The gelation temperature was reduced by adding HPMC K4M or carbopol 934P, and the viscosity was enhanced slightly. Either HPMC K4M or carbopol 934P delayed the release of PCV from in situ gel. PCV was released by non-Fickian diffusion. The study of ocular irritation for different PCV formulations did not show any irritation or damage for the cornea. PCV bioavailability from combination of carbopol 934P and pluronic F127 gels was higher than that obtained from any other gels. Conclusion Pluronic F127 formulations of PCV can be used as liquid for administration by instilling into the eye. Facilitated by the appropriate eye temperature, the formulations were transformed to gel phase. On the basis of in vitro and in vivo results, PCV formulations containing HPMC K4M or carbopol 934P and low concentration of pluronic F127 (12%) showed potential for use as a drug delivery system with improved ocular bioavailability.展开更多

The prepared electrode was characterized by scanning e...Electrochemically treated nanoporous TiO2 was employed as a novel electrode to assist in the pho- toelectrochemical degradation of acetaminophen and valacyclovir. The prepared electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), Mott-Schottky plots, ultraviolet-visible light (UV-vis) absorbance spec- troscopy, and a total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer were employed to investigate the photoelec- trochemical degradation of acetaminophen and valacyclovir. The results indicated no obvious re- moval of acetaminophen and valacyclovir over 3 h when separate photochemical degradation and electrochemical oxidation were employed. In contrast, acetaminophen and valacyclovir were rapid- ly eliminated via photoelectrochemical degradation. In addition, electrochemically treated nanopo~ rous TiO2 electrodes significantly enhanced the efficacy of the photoelectrochemical degradation of acetaminophen and valacyclovir, by 86.96% and 53.12%, respectively, when compared with un- treated nanoporous TiO2 electrodes. This enhanced performance may have been attributed to the formation of Ti3~, Ti2~, and oxygen vacancies, as well as an improvement in conductivity during the electrochemical reduction process. The effect of temperature was further investigated, where the activation energy of the photoelectrochemical degradation of acetaminophen and valacyclovir was determined to be 9.62 and 18.42 kJ/mol, respectively.展开更多

For...Aim To assess the safety and tolerance of adefovir dipivoxil (ADV) in Chinese healthy volunteers. Methods A total of 52 healthy volunteers, 26 males and 26 females, aged from 19 to 26 were enrolled in the study. Forty-two subjects were randomized into 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 mg dose groups (6 - 10 subjects in each) matched by sex and weight for single-dose trial. Ten subjects were orally given 10 mg of ADV tablets once daily for 7 d for multiple-dose trial. Physical examination, vital signs examination, electrocardiography, type-B ultrasonography, chest fluoroscopy, routine blood test, routine urine test, coagulation tests, and blood biochemical test were conducted on schedule and statistically evaluated. Results Asthenia frequently occurred in multiple-dose trial, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea occurred in both single- and multiple-dose trials. ALT, bilirubin, CK, and LDH were slightly elevated. All adverse reactions and laboratory abnormalities were mild, and the frequency and severity were not related to doses. Conclusion ADV is safe and well tolerated in Chinese healthy volunteers at dose of 5 - 60 mg oncedaily or 10 nag once daily for 7 d. The recommended oral dosage regimen is 10 mg once daily. Attention should be paid to renal and liver functions, CK, AMY and LDH, if we take ADV for a long period of time.展开更多
AIM: To compare the hemostatic efficacy and safety of two mechanical endoscopic methods: endoscopic band ligation (EBL) and endoscopic hemoclip placement (EHP) in patients with actively bleeding Mallory-Weiss syndrome...AIM: To compare the hemostatic efficacy and safety of two mechanical endoscopic methods: endoscopic band ligation (EBL) and endoscopic hemoclip placement (EHP) in patients with actively bleeding Mallory-Weiss syndrome (MWS). METHODS: A prospective randomized study to compare the efficacy and safety of EHP with EBL was performed from January 2002 to August 2005. Forty-one patients with active bleeding from MWS were treated with EHP (n = 21) or EBL (n = 20). RESULTS: There were no significant differences between groups with respect to clinical and endoscopic characteristics. The mean number of hemoclips applied was 3.2 ± 1.5 and the mean number of bands applied was 1.2 ± 0.4. Primary hemostasis was achieved in all patients. Recurrent bleeding was observed in one patient from the EHP group and two from the EBL group. Patients with recurrent bleeding were treated by the same modality as at randomization and secondary hemostasis was achieved in all. There were no significant differences between the two groups in total transfusion amount or duration of hospital stay. No complications or bleeding-related death resulted. CONCLUSION: EHP and EBL are equally effective and safe for the management of active bleeding in patients with Mallory-Weiss syndrome, even in those with shock or comorbid diseases.展开更多

This combination therapy has drastically improved t...Pegylated interferon α (IFNα) in combination with ribavirin is currently recommended as a standard-of-care treatment for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. This combination therapy has drastically improved the rate of sustained virological response, specifically in difficult-to-treat patients. Recently, individualized treatment, such as response-guided therapy, is being developed based on host-, HCV- and treatment-related factors. Furthermore, modified regimens with currently available medications, novel modified IFNα and ribavirin or combinations with specifically targeted antiviral therapy for HCV agents, are currently being investigated. The purpose of this review is to address some issues and epoch-making topics in the treatment of chronic HCV infection, and to discuss more optimal and highly individualized therapeutic strategies for HCV-infected patients.展开更多

AIM:To investigate retrospectively the long-term efficacy of various treatment strategies using adefovir dipivoxil(adefovir) in patients with lamivudine-resistant chronic hepatitis B.METHODS:We included 154 consecutiv...AIM:To investigate retrospectively the long-term efficacy of various treatment strategies using adefovir dipivoxil(adefovir) in patients with lamivudine-resistant chronic hepatitis B.METHODS:We included 154 consecutive patients in two treatment groups:the "add-on" group(n = 79),in which adefovir was added to ongoing lamivudine treatment due to lamivudine resistance,and the "switch/combination" group(n = 75),in which lamivudine was first switched to adefovir and then re-added later as needed.The "switch/combination" group was then divided into two subgroups depending on whether participants followed(group A,n = 30) or violated(group B,n = 45) a proposed treatment strategy that determined whether to add lamivudine based on the serum hepatitis B virus(HBV) DNA levels(< 60 IU/mL or not) after 6 mo of treatment(roadmap concept).RESULTS:The cumulative probability of virologic response(HBV DNA < 60 IU/mL) was higher in group A than in the "add-on" group and in group B(P < 0.001).In contrast,the cumulative probability of virologic breakthrough was lower in the "add-on" group than in group B(P = 0.002).Furthermore,the risk of virologic breakthrough in the multivariate analysis was significantly lower in the "add-on" group than in group A(hazard ratio = 0.096;95%CI,0.015-0.629;P = 0.015).CONCLUSION:The selective combination of adefovir with lamivudine based upon early treatment responses increased the odds of virologic breakthrough relative to the use of uniform combination therapy from the beginning of treatment.展开更多
