Kinematical element method was adopted to determine factor of safety and critical failure surface, which overcomes the disadvantage of limit equilibrium method. The theoretical relationship between the combination of shear strength parameters and stability state was studied. The results show that the location of critical slip surface, F/tan f and F/c depend only on the value of c/tan f. The failure surface moves towards the inside of slope as c/tan f increases. According to the information involving factor of safety and critical failure surface in a specific cross-section, strength parameters can be back calculated based on the above findings. Three examples were given for demonstrating the validity of the present method. The shear strength parameters obtained by back analysis are almost consistent with their correct solutions or test results.展开更多

The study includes four main stages: sampling, testing, modeling and assessment of the model performances. During the modeling stage, two pillar stability prediction models were investigated with FDA and SVMs methodology based on the statistical learning theory. After using 40 sets of measured data in various mines in the world for training and testing, the model was applied to other 6 data for validating the trained proposed models. The prediction results of SVMs were compared with those of FDA as well as the measured field values. The general performance of models developed in this study is close; however, the SVMs exhibit the best performance considering the performance index with the correct classification rate Prs by re-substitution method and Pcv by cross validation method. The results show that the SVMs approach has the potential to be a reliable and practical tool for determination of pillar stability for underground mines.展开更多

The semi-discretized technique is used to approximate the finite dimensional Floquet transition matrix of the dynamic control equation to determine the stability of milling process. The stability charts for helix mills are obtained. Results show that the helix angle plays an important role in the stability of milling process. The stability regions with helix angle become larger than those without helix angle. Some "islands" are presented in the stability charts, and "island" locations are determined by the relation between the axial depth of cut and the helix pitch. The "islands" are connected by the "bridge" by the effects of entry and exit cutting processes. The theoretical results are validated by milling experiments.展开更多

First, a method is introduced to deal with the consequent part of the fuzzy local model. Thus, the stability analysis method of the homogeneous fuzzy system can be used for reference. Stability conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities based on the fuzzy Lyapunov functions and the modified common Lyapunov functions, respectively. The results demonstrate that the stability result based on the fuzzy Lyapunov functions is less conservative than that based on the modified common Lyapunov functions via numerical examples. Compared with the method which does not expand the consequent part, the proposed method is simpler but its feasible region is reduced. Finally, in order to expand the application of the fuzzy Lyapunov functions, the piecewise fuzzy Lyapunov function is proposed, which can be used to analyze the stability for triangular or trapezoidal membership functions and obtain the stability conditions. A numerical example validates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.展开更多

This laid a foundation for estimating the relative chemical stability of the drug by determination of its decomposition kinetics using TGA. Although the observed thermal decomposition kinetics of CEZ·Na was complex, a conversion level of 1% was chosen for evaluation of the stability of CEZ·Na crystalline since the mechanism here was more likely to be that of the actual product failure. The evaluation results suggested that the α form of CEZ·Na had the best stability and the amorphous one was the least stable one among α form, dehydrated α form and amorphous form.展开更多

Compared with conventional sensors, fiber optic sensors have a variety of exclusive advantages, such as smaller size, higher precision, and better corrosion resistance. These innovative monitoring technologies have been successfully applied for performance monitoring of geo-structures and early warning of potential geo- hazards around the world. In order to investigate their ability to monitor slope stability problems, a medium-sized model of soil nailed slope has been constructed in laboratory. The fully distributed Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing technology was employed to measure the horizontal strain distributions inside the model slope. During model construction, a specially designed strain sensing fiber was buried in the soil mass. Afterward, the surcharge loading was applied on the slope crest in stages using hydraulic jacks and a reaction frame. During testing, an NBX-6o5o BOTDA sensing interrogator was used to collect the fiber optic sensing data. The test results have been analyzed in detail, which shows that the fiber optic sensors can capture the progressive deformation and failure pattern of the model slope. The limit equilibrium analyses were also conducted to obtain the factors ofsafety of the slope under different surface loadings. It is found that the characteristic maximum strains can reflect the stability of the model slope and an empirical relationship was obtained, This study verified the effectiveness of the distributed BOTDA sensing technology in performance monitoring of slope.展开更多

A new double reduction method, including a detailed calculation procedure and a definition of FOS for slope stability was developed based on the understanding of SRM. When constructing the new definition of FOS, efforts were made to make sure that it has concise physical meanings and fully reflects the shear strength of the slope. Two examples, slopes A and B with the slope angles of 63° and 34° respectively, were given to verify the method presented. It is found that, for these two slopes, the FOSs from original strength reduction method are respectively 1.5% and 38% higher than those from double reduction method. It is also found that the double reduction method predicts a deeper potential slide line and a larger slide mass. These results show that on one hand, the double reduction method is comparative to the traditional methods and is reasonable, and on the other hand, the original strength reduction method may overestimate the safety of a slope.
