Extreme snowfall events over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)cause considerable damage to local society and natural ecosystems.In this study,the authors investigate the projected changes in such events over the TP and its surr...Extreme snowfall events over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)cause considerable damage to local society and natural ecosystems.In this study,the authors investigate the projected changes in such events over the TP and its surrounding areas based on an ensemble of a set of 21st century climate change projections using a regional climate model,RegCM4.The model is driven by five CMIP5 global climate models at a grid spacing of 25 km,under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 pathways.Four modified ETCCDI extreme indices-namely,SNOWTOT,S1mm,S10mm,and Sx5day-are employed to characterize the extreme snowfall events.RegCM4 generally reproduces the spatial distribution of the indices over the region,although with a tendency of overestimation.For the projected changes,a general decrease in SNOWTOT is found over most of the TP,with greater magnitude and better cross-simulation agreement over the eastern part.All the simulations project an overall decrease in S1mm,ranging from a 25%decrease in the west and to a 50%decrease in the east of the TP.Both S10mm and Sx5day are projected to decrease over the eastern part and increase over the central and western parts of the TP.Notably,S10mm shows a marked increase(more than double)with high cross-simulation agreement over the central TP.Significant increases in all four indices are found over the Tarim and Qaidam basins,and northwestern China north of the TP.The projected changes show topographic dependence over the TP in the latitudinal direction,and tend to decrease/increase in low-/high-altitude areas.展开更多
A gene sequence coding for the precursor of Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) was modified by site-directed mutagenesis to change very low usage bias codons to higher usage bias ones for improvement of the gene expre...A gene sequence coding for the precursor of Galanthus nivalis agglutinin (GNA) was modified by site-directed mutagenesis to change very low usage bias codons to higher usage bias ones for improvement of the gene expression in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants. Results from Western blot analysis of some of the transgenic tobacco plants showed that the expression level of GNA in plants transformed with the modified gene GNA34m reached 0.25% of total soluble proteins, while that of the GNA34 gene transgenic plants was 0.17%. Since the GNA expression level increased, the aphid resistance of GNA34m transgenic plants were also enhanced significantly as judged by a 71.0% aphid population inhibition in insect bioassay of GNA34m transformed plants and 63.7% for the plants transformed with the natural GNA34 gene.展开更多
Mg65Cu25Y10 bulk amorphous alloy specimens prepared by conventional copper mould method were heated at 200 °C for different time and the phase contents as well as microstructure were studied.The XRD results show ...Mg65Cu25Y10 bulk amorphous alloy specimens prepared by conventional copper mould method were heated at 200 °C for different time and the phase contents as well as microstructure were studied.The XRD results show that the crystallization of Mg65Cu25Y10 bulk amorphous alloy specimen becomes complete as the treating time increases and Mg2Cu,Mg24Y5 and HCP-Mg crystalline phases are found.Snowflake-like morphology is found in different specimens through SEM observation.The EDS patterns show that the composition of the snowflake-like structure is close to that of the as-cast alloy.Laminated structures are observed from the TEM images of the snowflake-like structure.From the electron diffraction patterns,it is seen that the snowflake-like structure is the combination of Mg24Y5 and amorphous matrix.The FCC-Mg phase in the matrix transforms into HCP-Mg during the heat-treating process.展开更多
The ice melting performance of three types of deicers, including sodium chloride, calcium chloride and sodium acetate, were tested in laboratory under different temperature conditions, and their effects on asphalt mix...The ice melting performance of three types of deicers, including sodium chloride, calcium chloride and sodium acetate, were tested in laboratory under different temperature conditions, and their effects on asphalt mixture were evaluated from the point of the stripping resistance of asphalt mixture. Unsaturated Marshall samples were exposed to freeze-thaw cycling while immersed in the deicer solutions of different concentrations. After the freeze-thaw cycles, Cantabro tests were performed, and Cantabro loss was adopted to characterize the stripping resistance of asphalt mixture. The test results show that calcium chloride has the best comprehensive ice melting performance, and all deicers have detrimental effect on the stripping resistance of asphalt mixture at different degrees. The damage degree depends on deicer types and their concentration in the solution. Deicer solutions with about 2% concentration cause the greatest loss of stripping resistance due to serious freeze-thaw damage. Sodium acetate causes greater loss of stripping resistance than sodium chloride and calcium chloride at the same concentration.展开更多
Diaphanes is the fourth largest genus in Lampyridae, but no luciferase gene from this genus has been reported. In this paper, by PCR amplification of the genomic DNA, the luciferase gene of Diaphanes pectinealis, whic...Diaphanes is the fourth largest genus in Lampyridae, but no luciferase gene from this genus has been reported. In this paper, by PCR amplification of the genomic DNA, the luciferase gene of Diaphanes pectinealis, which is the first case from Diaphanes, was identified and sequenced. The luciferase gene from D. pectinealis spans 1958 base pairs (bp) from the start to the stop codon, including seven exons separated by six introns, and encoding a 547-residuelong polypeptide. Its deduced amino acid sequence showed high protein similarity to those of the Lampyrini tribe (93 - 94% ) and the Cratomorphini tribe (92%), while low similarity was found with the North American firefly Photinus pyralis (83%) of the Photinini tribe within the same subfamily Lampyrinae. The phylogenetic analysis performed with the deduced amino acid sequences of the luciferase gene further confirms that D. pectinealis, Pyrocoelia, Lampyris, Cratomorphus, and Photinus belong to the same subfamily Lampyrinae, and Diaphanes is closely related to Pyrocoelia, Lampyris, and Cratomorphus. Furthemore, the phylogenetic analysis based on the nucleotide sequences of the luciferase gene indicates Diaphanes is a sister to Lampyris. The phylogenetic analyses are partly consistent with morphological (Branham & Wenzel, 2003) and mitochondrial DNA analyses (Li et al, 2006).展开更多

Based on pot experiments in the greenhouse, the effects of chemical fertiIizers (CN), biofertiIizer (BF), inactivated broth (BI), starch wastewater (SW) and the combination of biofertiIizer and chemical fertiIizer (BC) on the yield, NO3- content and NO2- con-tent of XueIihong, soiI physicochemical properties and N2O emission were investi-gated. The resuIts showed that the yield of XueIihong in BC and CN treatments was improved by five times compared with CK; BF and SW treatments had insignifi-cant impact on the yield of XueIihong. Compared with CN treatment, BCL treatment exhibited simiIar improving effects on the yield of XueIihong, in which NO3- content of XueIihong and soiI was reduced by 16.4%-73.6% and 22%-29%, which reduced the risk of nitrogen eIuviations in soiI; average N2O fIux (FPV30) in BCL treatment was reduced by 58.3%-73.1% compared with CN treatment. In order to reduce the cohesive force between pavement and ice, the approach of pavement surface coating with hydrophobic admixtures is investigated. The deicing effect of this approach is examined by the contact angl...In order to reduce the cohesive force between pavement and ice, the approach of pavement surface coating with hydrophobic admixtures is investigated. The deicing effect of this approach is examined by the contact angle test and the shear test. The durability of the approach is examined by the accelerated abrasion test, and the skid resistance of the pavement with surface coating is examined by the British pendulum test and the surface texture depth test. In the contact angle test, the contact angle between hydrophobic admixture and water is 100.2°. In the shear test, the maximum shear stress is 0.06 MPa for the specimen coated with hydrophobic admixture, which is much lower than that of the specimen without hydrophobic admixture coating, 3.5 MPa. Furth- ermore, the ice and asphalt surface are completely separated for the coated specimen while not for the uncoated specimen. Based on the accelerated abrasion test, the residual hydro- phobic admixture in the veins of the pavement after abrasion still has a deicing effect. From the skid resistance tests, the British pendulum number (BPN) and the texture depth (TD) of the specimen coated with hydrophobic admixtures are larger than those of the standard requirements. The overall experi-mental observation indicates that the approach can effectively reduce close contact between asphalt pavement and ice; therefore, it can be a promising solution to road icing problems in winter.展开更多
