It is shown in the paper that the HVDC converter automatically provides the supreme voltage and frequency stabilizing function when a critical situation is detected, no matter the disturbances appeared in sending end or receiving end AC networks. This supreme voltage and frequency stabilizing function makes it possible to avoid the blackout even if all the generators are tripped under an extra-ordinary worst contingency. By plots of recorded transients, the paper will show how the eventual blackouts are avoided.展开更多

EVST sodium cooling system...The prototype fast breeder reactor "MONJU" has an EVSS (ex-vessel fuel storage system) which consists mainly of an EVST (ex-vessel fuel storage tank) and an EVST sodium cooling system. EVST sodium cooling system consists of three independent loops. During the normal operation, the primary sodium in the EVST is circulated by natural convection and the secondary circulation in the EVST sodium cooling system is powered by electromagnetic pumps. When an SBO (station blackout) occurs, all the pumps and blowers are tripped. Therefore, it was necessary to evaluate the cooling ability by the natural circulation of sodium in the EVST sodium cooling system and air through the air cooler during the SBO. In this study, an analysis and evaluation of the plant dynamics for the spent fuel and the EVSS structural integrity during an SBO were performed. When the number of cooling loops was not changed and natural circulation occurred in only two loops, the sodium temperature in the EVST increased to approximately 450 ~C. However, the structural integrity of the EVSS was maintained. The analytical results, therefore, help clarify the number of necessary cooling loops for efficient decay heat removal and sodium temperature behavior in an SBO.展开更多

In order to examine the effects that charging/discharging have on the demand in electricity, we analyze scenarios based on the simulation results of the EVs' parking location, parking duration and the battery state of charge. From the simulation, result under the ownership rate of EVs in the Nagoya metropolitan area in 2020 is about 6%, which turns out that the total CO2 emissions have decreased by 4% although the situation of urban transport is not changed. After calculating the electricity demand in each zone using architectural area and basic units of hourly power consumption, we evaluate the effect to decrease the peak load by V2G (vehicle-to-grid). According to the results, if EV drivers charge at home during the night and discharge at work during the day, the electricity demand in Nagoya city increases by approximately 1%, although changes in each individual zone range from -7% to +8%, depending on its characteristics.展开更多

On the contrary, proposed counter-rotating propellers do not require undertaking the reaction force of the pile, because the rotational torque is counter-balanced in the unit. This advantage means that the unit can be moored by only one cable. Continuously, this paper proposes such a power unit with tandem propellers, and experimentally investigates a behavior of the unit floating in a water channel. The vibrations of the power unit are induced from not only the individual but also the interacting rotations of the front and the rear propellers.展开更多

Methods: Forty patients, 20 with congenital heart disease (CHD) and 20 of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) , were divided into 2 groups: Control group (group A, n =20) including 10 patients suffering from CHD as group Al and the left 10 from RHD as group A2; and experiment group (group B, n =20) which consisting of group B1 (10 with CHD) and group B2 (10 of RHD). The patients in group A underwent traditional arrested-heart procedures, and those in group B were operated on with beating-heart procedures. Arterial blood samples were collected at preoperation (time A) , 20 min after cardiopul-monary bypass (CPB) starting (time B) , 1 h after CPB (time C) and 24 h postoperation (time D) respectively. Plasma contents of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and protein S-100b were measured with sensitive ELISA. All the patients received echoencephalography (EEG) before and 1 week after operation. Results: The plasma contents of protein S-lOOb were increased very significantly at time B, C and D in comparison with those at time A (P<0.01) , and that of patients in group Al was significantly higher than that in group B at time B (P < 0. 05 ). There was no significant difference at other time points. At time B, the plasma contents of NSE were significantly higher in group A than in group B, and in group Al and Bl than in group A2 and B2. What's more, at time B, the former fell back to their pre-operative levels, but the latter remained still higher levels than the preoperative ones ( P < 0.01). No significant difference was found in the abnormality rates of postoperative EEG between 2 groups. Conclusion: The perioperative plasma contents of NSE and protein S-100b are not significantly higher in group B than in group A. On-pump beating-heart procedures do not make more serious cerebral dysfunction than the traditional arrested-heart procedures.展开更多

The film was sintered and characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and chemisorption of oxygen. A culture bacterial consortium composed by gram negative rod-shaped microbes was prepared in a liquid agar in a flask. It was transported by air through a reactor equipped with a UV lamp with 3 and 5 sieves of a stainless steel wire coated with ZnO film. It was exposed in continuous in five experiments to photocatalytic advanced oxidation. The experiments showed a total efficiency for colony forming unit reduction of a maximum of 99.66% for a residence time of 20 seconds with 5 stainless steel wire where exposed in continuous to UV. Also they were evaluated at 7.5 seconds, observing that the contribution of residence time and amount of catalytic for the CFU reduction was quite similar. Variance analysis showed that the efficiency was significant with the no parametric Kruskal-Wallis test with P 〈 0.05. This technology could be used to clean indoor air of closed environments such as hospitals, crowded buildings or public transportation systems where airborne bacteria has been documented.展开更多

Controlling the flow patterns within the glass melting tanks with the aim of improving their performance is one of the glass industry primary challenges. The tank performance is basically determined by the RTD (residence time distribution) of the glass melt, which directly impacts the glass quality and energy distribution. In the present work, numerical simulations are carried out on the electromagnetic flow control to investigate how well the flow can be controlled by externally generated electromagnetic (Lorenz) forces that are added to the glass melt. Furthermore, the melting tanks are equipped with supplementary electric heating systems called "electric boosters". The desired result would be an improved RTD. The electromagnetic flow control is called "electromagnetic boosting" and can be realized by exposing the glass bath to an external magnetic field generating Lorentz forces on the glass melt as an additional flow component. The numerical simulations of the present study require coupled calculations of electromagnetic field, flow field, and temperature field, because the material properties of glass melt are strongly temperature-dependent. The computational results show that electromagnetic boosting is an excellent way of improving the RTD in glass melting tanks, ultimately resulting in better glass quality and increased productivity. Of course, the glass industry is highly interested in achieving exactly this result.展开更多

With the adoption of wind power generation equipment, however, lightning damage is also increasing in this area. Through his dimensional characteristics, the wind power system is more exposed in the nature compared to all others systems. Lightning damage is the single largest cause of unplanned downtime in wind turbines, and that downtime is responsible for the loss of countless megawatts of power generation. The wind turbines are important structures, since they can easily attract the wrath of storms hits heights close, they can also capture the most distant. The rotation of the blades may also trigger lightning and result in considerable increase in the number of strikes to a wind turbine unit. Since wind turbines are tall structures, the lightning currents that are injected by return strokes into the turbines will be affected by reflections at the top, at the bottom, and at the junction of the blades with the static base of the turbine. We present our contribution in this paper to study lightning strokes and their effects on the wind turbines with the aim to enrich the work and to suggest more effective means of protection against lightning.展开更多
