The globalization and nativization processes of English resulted in the appearance of a large number of regional varieties of English. Concerning their accent between the single norm theory and the multiple norm differences, there has always been a debate theory. This paper argues against the 'standard-nonstandard' classification of English accents upheld by the former, and revises the concept of 'the three concentric circles of English' proposed by the latter, providing some helpful tips on the current instruction of listening and speaking in China's colleges and universities. 展开更多

Among the many possible ways to assessing writing by giving feedbacks, the peer evaluation method is viewed as a relatively effective one for students. Traditional one-way teacher feedback with which the teachers usually make great efforts to mark out all errors had been proved to be unscientific. In this article, based on the specific situation in two English major classes in Wenhua Institute attached to HUST, a series of training and experiments were designed with the aim of proving the effect of peer evaluation in writing class. It is emphasized that language teachers should recognize the practical value of peer evaluation, and try to help students be involved in making peer responses in the writing process actively, so that students can get meaningful experience from evaluating their peers' writing, which, in turn, will enhance their own ability to produce more satisfactory essays. 展开更多

Computer-assisted language leaming is a trend in the language teaching field of the 21st century and it is also advocated by the latest college English curriculum requirements. To test this model, we've conducted an ... Computer-assisted language leaming is a trend in the language teaching field of the 21st century and it is also advocated by the latest college English curriculum requirements. To test this model, we've conducted an experiment on a campus-network-based listening and speaking course with 869 students from the NAAU since the 2005-2006 academic years. It has been proved that the new model enjoys great advantages over the conventional teacher-and-recorder teaching, though it is not thoroughly free from limitations or problems. On the one hand, this new model may provide students with authentic language sample, richer materials, interactive platform, friendly context, ect; on the other hand, factors such as costly hardware and software, non-stopping changes, lack of talents and inadequate funds are all preventing it from playing its role to full extent. Thus counter measures should be taken as soon as possible to break the bottleneck restricting the model from further development. 展开更多

The present paper intends to study the relationship between foreign language learning proficiency and cognitive styles from the perspectives of psychology, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition. Through the analysis, the author has arrived at a conclusion that learners with different cognitive styles adopt quite different strategies in learning a foreign language. The best-matched methods fitting for different cognitive styles may help learners improve their learning proficiency. Therefore, in order to improve teaching proficiency, foreign language teachers should keep a match between learners' cognitive styles and teaching methodologies. 展开更多

The basic problem in teaching mechanics of materials is that some subjects discussed in the reference books are not easy to understand for most of the students. Using experience of many years teaching mechanics of materials, we have been continuously trying to find easier methods to help the students get a better understanding of fundamental concepts. This effort and investigation has led to innovative and simple approaches to prove the equations much easier than the existing ones and also to clarify complicated concept. In this paper, we are offering our innovative proof for elastic flexure formulas as well as an interesting model for the moment sign convention in the cross section of a beam. In this method, considering a portion of a beam under pure bending and obtaining the stress distribution in the cross section and applying the balance of the considered portion, we prove the Elastic Flexure Formulas much easier than the existing methods. Emphasizing on deeper understanding, some notes and a new model are offered during this proof. 展开更多

With the development of language teaching theories and researches, people gradually realize the importance of listening among the basic foreign language skills. Thus, how to improve the efficiency of foreign language listening teaching has long been a concern of researchers and foreign language teachers. As the beginning of English study, primary English is of significant importance for the learners' future language development. The study tries to put primary English listening together with metacognitive strategy and build up the metacognitive strategy-oriented model in primary English listening class in order to improve primary students' listening comprehension. Firstly, the thesis pointed out the disadvantages of the current primary English listening teaching. In order to make up these disadvantages, the previous studies of listening comprehension and metacognition both home and abroad are reviewed and the necessity and feasibility of the study are discussed. Finally, it is concluded that it is necessary and feasible to carry out the metacognitive strategy-oriented model in primary English class. 展开更多

There is a consensus in the literature that mathematical ability contributes to student success in tertiary education. More importantly, mathematical skills are necessary when successfully completing mathematics- and/or science-based degrees. Social sciences such as psychology and economics require statistical skills which also require knowledge of mathematics. Even business students, such as marketing and accounting students need the necessary mathematical skills to successfully complete their degrees at university. This paper suggests that student success in a core business subject is dependent on their mathematical aptitude, attitude, and type of secondary schooling whether government or non-government schools. There is urgency for universities to recognize that high failure rates are due to insufficient mathematics exposure in secondary schooling and remedial classes might not be enough. Specifying a minimum (maths, e.g., two units) requirement for entry and/or providing bridging programs to ensure students have the necessary basic mathematical skills would increase student success in quantitative units. 展开更多

In 1778, Abbe Guinot, a priest native of Lorraine and professor in the seminary of Toul, published in Nancy the two volumes of his philosophical lectures, whose subtitle is "On Logic." This concerns a general philosophy of knowledge and a critic of philosophical systems. Guinot is interested in science and natural discoveries. He describes the organization of institutional science and appreciates the progress of sciences but he makes a distinction between scientific progress and philosophers' sophisms that he criticizes. In order to favor science and avoid philosophical errors, logic is essential in students' training. According to Guinot, logic allows us to extend our intellectual abilities, upliR our ideas, help our thought processes, and mature our reflection. However, this logic refers to the great book of nature written in mathematical language. Guinot thinks that scientific experiment is of the highest importance for accuracy of mind. This logic lecture is inspired by Aristotle but above all by Port-Royal Logic. It gives a place to Locke empiricism and it favors development of sciences. Abbe Guinot was a chaplain in the cathedral of Nancy; he emigrated in 1791. He came back in France during the Consulate and he died a few time later. 展开更多
