It is an encyclop...Since the printing and publication of the first carved edition of＂Exploitation of the Works of Nature＂ in 1637 （the tenth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty）, it has been 380 years of history. It is an encyclopedia describing China＇s ancient agricultural and handicraft technologies, which occupies an important position in the history of the world science and technology, and the author Song Yingxing is praised by the British expert on the world science and technology history Dr. Joseph Needham as the ＂Chinese Diderot＂. This book is of great value in the language and the cultural researches. From the perspective of the linguistics, the technical terminologies on the agriculture, the handicraft and other disciplines in this paper are classified and analyzed from the semantic point of view, so as to provide an empirical reference for the better dissemination of the book and the diachronic study of the Chinese terminologies.展开更多

This paper see...The Romantics＇ relationship with Alexander Pope and his literary authority was a complicated one, and William Wordsworth＇s opinion of Pope oscillated between reverence and disdain throughout his life. This paper seeks to explore the underlying emotions embedded in Wordsworth＇s borrowing of Alexander Pope＇s expression, the ＂language of the heart,＂ in the poem Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, on Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour （1798）. The author traces Pope＇s use of the ＂heart＂ to refer to his literary predecessor Abraham Cowley in The First Epistle of the Second Book of Horace, Imitated （Pope＇s Epistle to Augustus） （1737） and to his father in An Epistle to Arbuthnot （1735）. In focusing on Pope＇s attribution of the ＂language of the heart＂ to his father and Wordsworth＇s reference using Pope＇s phrase to his sister Dorothy, the author demonstrates how the poets express at once fondness towards a beloved family member and a desire for detachment from the kin who is no match for the poet with regards to such qualities as erudition and ambition. Through these examinations, the author shows that the connection between Pope and his father and between Wordsworth and his sister, through the common adage of＂language of the heart,＂ is in fact representative of Wordsworth＇s own bearing with Pope.展开更多

This paper re-analyzes and gives new geo-historical interpretations of parts of the travel report Shenjianlu（ 身见录; literally, Report About What I Saw in Person） , written by Chinese Christian Priest Fan Shou-yi ...This paper re-analyzes and gives new geo-historical interpretations of parts of the travel report Shenjianlu（ 身见录; literally, Report About What I Saw in Person） , written by Chinese Christian Priest Fan Shou-yi 樊守义（1682-1753） and focuses on his long stay in Europe（1708-19） , while he was retinue for the Italian Jesuit Antonio Francesco Provana 艾若瑟.（1662-1720）. The original document, unknown today or perhaps lost, was drafted once Fan returned to China and submitted it to the Emperor Kangxi康熙帝（ 1654-1722）. Currently, the Shenjianlu is known only thanks to a manuscript copy kept in the National Library of Rome. New notes and identifications of specific monuments or places seen or toured by Fan are here critically discussed, with particular regard to Portugal and Italy, at that time divided into several regional independent countries.展开更多
