But scientific research is much less prolific about social adhesion to those practices. How could we be certain that peasants will integrate them and transform their agriculture? It is at that particular point that we settled our contribution. Our goal is to determine what are the levers which could be activated to promote agroecological practices, and, on the contrary, what are the obstacles which could prevent social adhesion to agroecology. The meticulous fieldwork carried in Barani, a landlocked small village in the North-West of the Burkina Faso, shows that all the ingredients for the development and the dissemination of agroecology already exist. Indeed, traditional agriculture is not so far from agroecology. But we noticed among peasants ofBarani a rejection of the local farming system synonymous, according to them, with backwardness, and an attraction for industrial agriculture, sign of modernity. Dissemination of agroecology will have to go through a major confidence-building work of the peasants with their own practices, as opposed to multiple trainings where they are always being taught what they already know.展开更多

The GP contains two subunits, GPI and GP2, linked by a disulfide bond, which are responsible for receptor binding and membrane fusion, respectively. In this study, the full length of GP gene of Ebola Zaire species, 2028 base pairs in length, was synthesized using 38 overlapping oligonucleotides by multiple rounds of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The synthesized GP gene was shown to be efficiently expressed in mammalian cells. Furthermore, an efficient HIV-based pseudotyping system was developed using the synthetic GP gene, providing a safe approach to dissecting the entry mechanism of Ebola viruses. Using this pseudotyping system and mutational analysis, the role of the charged residues in the GP2 helical regions was examined. It was found that substitutions of the most charged residues in the regions did not adversely affect GP expression, processing, or viral incorporation, however, most of the mutations greatly impaired the ability of GP to mediate efficient viral infection. These results demonstrate that these charged residues of GP2 play an important role in GP-mediated Ebola entry into its host cells. We propose that these charged residues are involved in forming the intermediate conformation(s) of GP in membrane fusion and Ebola entry.展开更多

Here,we report that PA is an efficient apoptosis agent triggering cell death of hypersensitive-like response in planta. Confirmed by Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS),rice suspension cells and leaves exhibited programmed cell death induced by PA. The PA-induced cell death was associated with the accumulation of reactive oxygen species that could be blocked by diphenylene iodonium chloride, indicating that the generation of reactive oxygen species was NADPHoxidase dependent. We also demonstrated the induction of rice defense-related genes and subsequent resistant enhancement by PA against the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe grisea. Hence,it was concluded that the PA-stimulated defense response likely involves the onset of the hypersensitive response in rice, which also provides a simple eliciting tool for studying apoptosis in the plant cell.展开更多

In order to understand the mechanism of oxidation of lactose, a systematic kinetic study of oxidation of lactose with photochemicaUy generated radicals was carried out. The reaction has a first order dependence on chloramine-T as well as on substrate. The reaction is catalysed by H+ ions as well. On the basis of kinetic results and product analysis a probable mechanism were suggested.展开更多

The process of the dissemination and selection of three kinds of modem artifacts-new foods, cell phones and computers--highlights the intergenerational tilt, the phenomenon of decentralization and the trend towards a digital divide. The subversion of conventional intergenerational relations in the process of the transmission of artifact civilization, as a significant part of Chinese psychological reactions to over three decades of reform and opening up, is indispensable to the psychological integrity of Chinese experience.展开更多

CLOCK-interacting protein, Circadian(CIPC), has been indicated as an additional negative-feedback regulator of the circadian clock in vitro, although its physiological roles in circadian clock are unknown. Here, we generated Cipc homozygous knockout(Cipc-/-) mice and assessed the resultant circadian phenotypes. Surprisingly, the m RNA expression profiles of core clock genes in the liver of Cipc-/- mice showed no significant differences from that in wild-type mice except for Per1. Cipc-/- mice displayed normal locomotor rhythm and entrained activity pattern in both 12:12 light-dark cycle and constant dark cycle. Furthermore, deletion of Cipc in lungs and adipose tissues did not influence their peripheral clock. The results from this work provided more conclusive data suggesting that CIPC is not critically required for basic clock function.展开更多

As on other Mediterranean islands, the faunal composition was dramatically changed by the invasion of commensal and domestic species following Holocene colonization by humans. We exa- mined the behavioral responses of the Cypriot mouse to the odors of these new competitors (black and Norway rat, house mouse and spiny-mouse) and predator (domestic cat) as well as controls (Herb-field mouse, guinea pig). We compared them with those of mainland population of house mouse from Syria with different coexistence history. Surprisingly, the Cypriot mouse failed to avoid the odor of its current main competitor, the black rat. Moreover, the response patterns of both the Cypriot and Syrian house mice to the examined odor sources appeared fairly comparable. There was a clear tendency to prefer odors of other murids over unscented sawdust as well as to avoid the odor of a domestic cat. In conclusion, neither the long-term isolation from predators nor the recent strong competition with black rats affected mice eompetitory and antipredatory responses fundamentally [Current Zoology 61 (4): 781-791, 2015].展开更多
