His first novel Sister Carrie(1900)is a great work ofnaturalist style and the publication of the novel secures his status in the history of American literature. This novel tells a story about Carrie who tries to make the American dream come true. Carrie was born in the countryside. She is poor but vainglorions. With a strong desire for an affluent life in the city, she comes to Chicago, but the harsh reality of unemployment, sickness and indifference of the family make her abandon the original moral value, and she becomes the lover of Drouet, and Hurstwood. Later, she becomes an actress through her own effort in New York, squeezing into the bourgeois "higher" society. However, her success doesn't bring her inner joy and satisfaction, but a huge emptiness and boredom. This paper attempts to analyze the disillusionment of the America Dream pursued by Carrie and draws the conclusion that it is clearly reflected that it's fine for people to pursue their dreams, but in a materialistic society without a good set of core values, if they are controlled and trapped by strong desire for material comforts, they will get lost and what they lose will be far more than what they gain.展开更多

The environmental damage costs of electricity generation are very important for both policy analysis and the proper management of the environment. A method was developed in this work to estimate gross environmental damage costs according to emission inventory and environmental cost factors, and to extend the costs from provincial to national level with population density. In this paper, sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter (PM10), and carbon dioxide (CO2) from fossil fired power plants over 6000 kW were selected as index pollutants to quantify the environmental costs of damages on human health and global warming. With the new developed method, environmental damage costs, caused by 3 types of fired power plants in 30 provinces and 6 economic sectors during the years 2000 to 2003, were evaluated and analyzed. It can be seen that the calculated total national environmental damage costs of electricity have rapidly increased from 94930.87×106 USD in 2000 to about 141041.39×106 USD in 2003, with an average annual growth rate of 14.11%. Environmental damage costs of SO2, NOx, PM10, and CO2 are 69475.69×106, 30079.29×106, 28931.84×106, and 12554.57×106 USD and account for 49.26%, 21.33%, 20.51%, and 8.90% of total environmental costs in fossil electricity generation, respectively. With regard to regional distribution, external costs caused by fossil electricity generation are mainly concentrated in the more populated and industrialized areas of China, i.e., the Eastern Central and Southeastern areas.展开更多

Here billions of USD are annually invested in developing new treatments, drugs, robots etc. to diagnose and cure diseases. Nevertheless, this study establishes that there is a fundamental shortcoming in the system that supports healthcare innovation: It is strongly biased towards micro-level innovation projects focusing on new products, alternative processes, and new financial solutions. The problem with this approach to support new projects is that the results are created as inventions within the system thus lacking holistic perspectives. This has consequently contributed with increasing costs that are out of proportion with existing budgets. Therefore this study seeks to analyze the current understanding of the Nordic healthcare system from a business model perspective. Here other aspects of the healthcare system are explored to determine if they could be redesigned to promote new types of innovation projects. The purpose of undertaking this task is to challenge the established patterns of the current healthcare innovation support practices. Here the vertical innovation process (VIP) framework, which is a systematic radical innovation model that seeks macro-level outcomes based on standalone inventions (see more below), is applied to analyze the current state-of-the-art in Nordic healthcare innovation projects. The results determine that very little attention is given to rethink and redesign the healthcare system at a macro-level, and it is discussed that stand-alone inventions ought to be rethought into the entire healthcare system to create a larger impact. Finally, it is argued that existing performance measures are inappropriate to foster projects that innovate the existing system: New measuring points should be developed to promote macro-level projects and to avoid the current rapid increase of costs in the Nordic healthcare system.展开更多

Sinc...This paper examines the appropriateness of the adoption of Anglo-American type of reorganization provisions into national bankruptcy law using Thailand as a sample. It argues that such adoption shall be cautious. Since Thailand started to accommodate such provisions, reorganization, apparently, has limited usefulness--benefitting only large-scale debtors because it does not fit with the nature of Thai business culture, i.e., the borrowing-lending relationship and less-than-arm's length business connections. On average, only every one in 200 bankruptcy cases employs reorganization; the rest goes for liquidation but the average outstanding debt in reorganization is over 30 times higher than liquidation. Interestingly, the adjudication rate of reorganization is faster than those of liquidation. Debtors' strategic use of the law and the procedural bias are suspected. Debt restructuring led by the central bank in cooperation with commercial banks, instead, is overwhelmingly more successful, equally efficient, and effective because any ailing firm can renegotiate its borrowing contract rather easily in the low transaction cost environment. Debt restructuring outperformed reorganization roughly 800 and two times in terms of cases and debt amount respectively. Thus, the adoption of non-indigenous provisions shall be made prudently. This argument applies towards the standardization of insolvency legislation. Standardizing bankruptcy procedures shall be made carefully and national economic conditions including local business nature and uniqueness are worth examined before any enactment or amendment. Otherwise, benefits of international trade and investment would be achieved at the expense of economic efficiency.展开更多

The field monitoring results indicate the following. (1) Convergence displacement of rock surface increases with time continuity and shows surrounding rock's intense theological behavior. The original support scheme cannot control the large deformation and strongly theological behavior; (2) Without backfilling, the U-shaped steel support begins to bear load after erecting for 4-7 days and increases rapidly in the first 30 days. The U-shaped steel support at the right shoulder and top of roadway bears a larger force and the left side and shoulder bears a smaller force; (3) The stress of bolt increasing over time and at the right shoulder of roadway has larger growth and value. The mechanism of rock deformation and the failure and strata behavior in water-rich soft rock roadway are revealed based on the results of the measured relaxation zone of surrounding rock, measured stresses, and the rock mechanics tests.展开更多

These islands were classified as large, medium, and small scales on the basis of the island area (100-1000m2, large island; 50-100m2, middle island; 10-50m2, small island). Each scale of the investigation involved eight islands. The responses ofβ-diversity patterns of plant taxon to the habitat fragmentation at local community and metacommunity levels were analyzed on different scales of 24 isolated islands. The results indicated that at the local community level, there were 57 species belonging to 20 families and 49 genera in large islands, 49 species belonging to 16 families and 40 genera in middle islands, and 27 species belonging to eight families and 23 genera in small islands, β-diversity indexes for species, genus and family in large, middle, and small islands varied greatly, and the highest value of the indexes was not noted in the largest island. However, the average of the data obtained at the three scales showed that across large islands, Whittaker indexes were low and Bray-Curtis similarity indexes were high, while across small islands, Whittaker indexes were high and Bray-Curtis similarity indexes were low. At the metacommunity level, Whittaker indexes for species and genus showed a great significantly negative double logarithmic correlation (p〈0.01) with the island area, whereas the Bray-Curtis indexes for species, genus and family showed a great significantly positive double logarithmic correlation (p〈0.01) with the island area. At both local community and metacommunity levels, tumovers of species and genus could respond more sensitively to spatial changes of plant diversity patterns than that of family. Hence, the species and the genus could be used for the analysis offl-diversity patterns of plant community.展开更多

China's dynamic and fast growing economy for the past decade entails some structural changes and weaknesses and as a consequence, there are some business failures. We propose bankruptcy prediction models using Chinese firm data via several data mining tools and traditional logit analysis. We used Chinese firm data one year prior to bankruptcy and our results suggest that the financial variables developed by Altman (1968) and Ohlson (1980) perform reasonably well in determining business failures of Chinese firms, but the overall prediction rate is low compared with those of the US or other countries' studies. The reasons for this low prediction rate may be structural weaknesses resulting from China's fast growth and immature capital market.展开更多

Dong ancestors can be traced back to the Baiyue, dry Vietnam of Qin and Han Dynasties with a long history, unique customs and culture. Whether architecture, handicrafts, or folk arts community, they all have been highly recognized by experts and scholars. But in recent years with China' s rapid economic development, the quality of people' s lives have constantly improved, the use of new materials was widespread, as well as foreign cultures and various trends continued to penetrate in the Dong region, Dong architectural heritage is facing unprecedented impact, while Dong also exposed some of the drawbacks of traditional residential architecture. So far there have been intensified phenomena of abandoning traditional residential construction, demolition, reconstruction, and many buildings destroying cultural heritage. It is a major issue existing in the development of the Dong residential transformation to strike a balance between retaining the traditional architectural features of houses and improving the Dong people ' living conditions. Ideas for Dong village houses architectural conservation should not just blindly maintain the status quo, but rather find a positive solution to meet the appearing new demands from social development and improvement of the living environment of people, only meet the housing needs of this new issue is the key of resolution, is development direction of the scientific and sustainable conservation of national construction.展开更多

But the same indicators of internal factors in the rapidly changing external environment can lead to bankruptcy, and not in others. External factors are the most dangerous, because the possible influence on them is minimal and the impact of their implementation can be devastating. This paper focuses on the same factors to assess the impact of the macroeconomic indicators (extemal factors) on the parameters of static models predicting a local approximation of the crisis at the plant. To accomplish the purpose, a Spark set of 100 companies was compiled, including 50 companies which officially declared bankruptcy in the period of 2000-2009 and 50 stable operating companies with a random sample of the same time period. External factors were extracted from the Joint Economic and Social Data Archive1 The author compared two data sets: (1) microeconomic indicators--money to the total liabilities, retained earnings to total assets, net profit to revenue, Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) to assets, net income to equity, net profit to total liabilities, current liabilities to total assets, the totality of short-term and long-term loans to total assets, current assets to current liabilities, assets to revenue, equity to total assets, and current assets to revenue; and (2) external factors--index of real gross domestic product (GDP), industrial production index, the index of real cash incomes, an index of real investments, consumer price index, the refinancing rate, unemployment rate, the price of electricity, gas prices, oil price, gas price, dollar to ruble, ruble euro Standard & Poor (S&P) index, the Russian Trading System (RTS) index, and region. The aim of the comparison results paging classes "insolvent" and "non-bankrupt" is achieved using two methods: classification and discrimination. In both methods, computational procedures are realized with the use of algorithms linear regression, artificial neural network, and genetic algorithm. In the 2-m model, data set includes both internal and external factors. The results showed that the inclusion of only the microeconomic indicators, excluding external factors, impedes models about two times.展开更多

We divide these large earthquakes into three types. Type A contains earthquakes with surface ruptures and displacements. Type B is earthquakes without displacements and Type C is those without any of this data. We simulate a triangular distribution of displacements for Type B and C. Then,we segment these large earthquakes by using their displacements and surface ruptures. Finally, kinematic models are determined from earthquake data and Bicubic Bessel spline functions. The results show that, first of all,the reasonability and spatial consistency of defined models are advanced.Strain rates have better continuity and are comparable with geologic and geodetic results in Himalaya thrust fault zones. The strain rates decrease in the Tarim basin and the Altun Tagh fault zones because of their low seismicity. The direction of compressional deformation in Gobi-Altay is changed from SE to NE and its extensional direction is changed from NE to NW. The extensional deformation in the Ordos block is diminished obviously. Secondly, earthquakes account for 30- 50% of expected motion of India relative to Eurasia determined from the NUVEL-1A model, with a missing component of 20 mm / a which may contain aseismic deformation such as fault creep and folds, the missing parts of earthquake data and elastic strain energy released by potential earthquakes.展开更多

文摘Sustainable development,a concept which has been built with the sustainability of economic progression as a main thrust, has been a widely preferred model to traditional developmental models. However, the real meaning of what sustainable development is and should include has been an object of debate. On the one hand, differing from traditional economic developmental models, economic progress does not necessitate the practice of ‘sustainable development'.On the other hand, current levels of science and technology are still unable to solve several problems that arise with economic development.Sustainable development has transferred the responsibility of environmental destruction to that of developing countries.Lastly, instead of utilizing the best technology and leadership into formulating excellent environmental-protection policies,it is more important to create widespread awareness to the public on the need to protect the environment and thereby engage their participation in decision-making to actually realize what is truly ‘sustainable development'.
文摘This paper examines the appropriateness of the adoption of Anglo-American type of reorganization provisions into national bankruptcy law using Thailand as a sample. Otherwise, benefits of international trade and investment would be achieved at the expense of economic efficiency.

文摘Aiming to get the strata behavior and stability rules of surrounding rock of the main return airway of Yushujing Coal Mine, convergence deformation of two sides and force of U-shaped steel yieldable support and bolt were monitored, and deformation of surrounding rock and mechanical characteristics of support structure were timely obtained to guide the informa- tion construction and optimize supporting parameters in water-rich soft rock roadway. The mechanism of rock deformation and the failure and strata behavior in water-rich soft rock roadway are revealed based on the results of the measured relaxation zone of surrounding rock, measured stresses, and the rock mechanics tests.

文摘A number of isolated islands of Leymus chinensis + herbosa community were investigated in fragmented habitat islands, by Braun-Blanquet field survey approach, in a degenerated meadow in the Songnen Plain, China in 2007. Hence, the species and the genus could be used for the analysis offl-diversity patterns of plant community.
文摘China's capital market is different from that of the US in economic, political, and socio-cultural ways. The reasons for this low prediction rate may be structural weaknesses resulting from China's fast growth and immature capital market.
文摘Dong is one of Chinese minorities. Ideas for Dong village houses architectural conservation should not just blindly maintain the status quo, but rather find a positive solution to meet the appearing new demands from social development and improvement of the living environment of people, only meet the housing needs of this new issue is the key of resolution, is development direction of the scientific and sustainable conservation of national construction.

文摘Deep-seated large-scale toppling failure presents unique challenges in the study of natural slope deformation process in mountainous regions. An active deep-seated toppling process was identified in the Erguxi slope located in southwest China, which affected a large area and damaged critical transportation infrastructure with the volume of the deforming rock mass exceeding 24×10~6 m^3.It poses significant risks to the downstream Shiziping Hydropower Station by damming the Zagunao River.Field investigation and monitoring results indicate that the deformation of the Erguxi slope is in the advanced stage of deep-seated toppling process, with the formation of a disturbed belt but no identifiable master failure surface. It was postulated that the alternating tensile and shear strength associated with the hard/soft laminated rock strata of metasandstone and phyllite layers preclude the development of either a tensile or shear failure surface, which resulted in the continuous deformation and displacement without a catastrophic mass movement. The slope movement is in close association with the unfavorable geological conditions of the study area in addition to the construction of transportation infrastructure and the increase of the reservoir level. On the basis of the mechanism and intensity of the ongoing toppling deformation,a qualitative grading system was proposed to describe the toppling process and toevaluate the slope stability. This paper summarized the field observation and monitoring data on the toppling deformation for better characterizing its effect on the stability of the Erguxi slope. The qualitative grading system intends to provide a basis for quantitative study of large-scale deep-seated toppling process in metamorphic rocks.
文摘Analysis of the problem of predicting bankruptcy shows that foreign and domestic models included only internal factors of enterprises. The results showed that the inclusion of only the microeconomic indicators, excluding external factors, impedes models about two times.

文摘We collect seismic moment tensors of the earthquakes occurring from 1900 to 2013 in and around the Chinese mainland and summarize the surface ruptures and displacements of 70 earthquakes with M S≥7. 0. Secondly, earthquakes account for 30- 50% of expected motion of India relative to Eurasia determined from the NUVEL-1A model, with a missing component of 20 mm / a which may contain aseismic deformation such as fault creep and folds, the missing parts of earthquake data and elastic strain energy released by potential earthquakes.
