In order to capture the mechanism of roadway instability in deep mines, a new approach of Physically Finite Elemental Slab Assemblage (PFESA) is proposed in order to construct a large-scale physical model simulating the geologically horizontal strata. We carried out physical modeling on the deformation and failure processes of roadways subjected to a plane loading scheme. Our laboratory tests were based on work which incorporated infrared (IR) detection, IR radiation temperature (IRT) statistics, image feature extraction and 2D Fourier transformation, from resulting thermographies. The IRT characterizes the mechanical responses from the roadway after loading with two stages, i.e., IRT evolving at higher levels corresponded to shallow mining (≤500 m) during which the roadway deformed gradually (referred to as the "steady deformation stage"); IRT evolving in a quasi-cyclical manner with multiple peaks corresponded to deep mining (800–2600 m), in which the failure mode for the roadway are dominated by breakage and collapse (called the "unsteady deformation stage"). The IR images and 2D Fourier spectra illustrate detailed information in terms of initiation, nucleation and coalescence of the damage to rock masses and the eventual failure of roadways subject to external loading. 展开更多

Propeller blade width measurement has been extensively studied in the past using direct and indirect methods, and it plays a great role in determining the quality of the finished products. It has surveyed that previous techniques are usually time-consuming and erroneous due to a large number of points to be processed in blade width measurement. This paper proposes a new method of measuring blade width using two images acquired from different viewpoints of the same blade. And a new feature points matching approach for propeller blade image is proposed in stereo vision measurement. Based on these, pixel coordinates of contour points of the blade in two images are extracted and converted to real world coordinates by image algorithm and binocular stereo machine vision theory. Then, from the real world coordinates, the blade width at any position can be determined by simple geometrical method. 展开更多

It was followed by the quantification of relative importance. Finally,the proper coding mode was chosen utilizing an unequal comparison procedure. The simulation results show that the proposed method can improve peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) up to 0. 9 dB and 1. 6 dB comparing with the field only and the dispersed flexible macro-block ordering (FMO)only methods respectively. 展开更多

Laser triangulation theory was used to develop a novel contact-free method for measuring the coal level in a silo under harsh environmental conditions found in coal mines, such as the presence of dense dust, high humidity, and low illumination. A laser source and a camera were mounted at the top of the silo. The laser spot projected into the silo was imaged by the camera. The pinhole imaging principle allows the level to be found from the lateral shift of the spot image on the sensor. A pre-calibrated look-up table of the coal depth versus spot position was used to obtain the depth. The measurement accuracy depends on the step size used during pre-calibration. The actual application of a device designed according to these principles shows that it is easy to implement. The detection of the coal level in a silo at the low illumination level found in coal mines is demonstrated. 展开更多

The "Pictorial" or "Iconic Turn" is a central issue in the contemporary theory of images and visual cultural studies. Should the theories concerning the "Iconic Turn" and formulated in the last 20 years by scholars such as Gottfried Boehm, William Mitchell, Hans Belting be taken as critical theories of crisis? Is the currently experienced "turn towards images" (and their progressive rehabilitation after a long standing philosophical and theological rejection) a sign and symptom of some crisis of people's relation with images, language and, generally speaking, with the representation forms of reality? The main hypothesis of this essay envisages two sets of problems: first, the analysis of the relation between the possible idea of turning point and the concept of crisis; secondly, the thorough investigation of the relation connecting the iconic turn to the project of "critical iconology" or "critique of visual culture," as outlined by Hans Belting and William Mitchell. From the interpretation of the "Iconic Turn" as situation of crisis and aesthetic, anthropological, and epistemological transformation follows the need for the sciences of image to provide a "critical iconology" in order to be able to theoretically reformulate the ideological and political presuppositions of some dominant contemporary forms of visual representation. 展开更多

It has been proven that BPNNs (back-propagation neural networks) have high attainable classification accuracy. However, there is a noticeable variation in the achieved accuracies due to different network designs and implementations. Hence, researchers usually need to conduct several experimental trials before they can finalize the network design. This is a time consuming process which significantly reduces the effectiveness of using BPNNs and the final design may still not be optimal. Therefore, there is a need to see whether there are some common guidelines for effective design and implementation of BPNNs. With this aim in mind, this paper attempts to find and summarize the common guidelines suggested by different authors through literature review and discussion of the findings. For deep mining engineering, heat transfer of coal mass is a vital factor in the thermal environment of coal mines. In order to study the thermal conduction mechanism, we obtained gray images of coal mass microstructure by scanning samples with a digital microscope. With the use of Matlab, these gray images were transformed into binary images, which were then transformed into a corresponding matrix consisting only of the values 0 and 1. According to the calculation method of box-counting dimension, we calculated the fractal dimension of the loose coal to be approximately 1.86. The thermal conductivity expressions of loose coal were derived based on the simulation method of thermal resistance. We calculated the thermal conductivity of loose coal by using a fractal model and compared the calculated values with our experimental data. The results show that the test data show an encourag-ing agreement with the calculated values. Hence fractal theory is a feasible method for studying thermal conductivity of loose coal. 展开更多

In this paper, an electrical resistance tomography(ERT) imaging method is used as a classifier, and then the Dempster-Shafer's evidence theory with fuzzy clustering is integrated to improve the ERT image quality. The fuzzy clustering is applied to determining the key mass function, and dealing with the uncertain, incomplete and inconsistent measured imaging data in ERT. The proposed method was applied to images with the same investigated object under eight typical current drive patterns. Experiments were performed on a group of simulations using COMSOL Multiphysics tool and measurements with a piece of porcine lung and a pair of porcine kidneys as test materials. Compared with any single drive pattern, the proposed method can provide images with a spatial resolution of about 10% higher, while the time resolution was almost the same. 展开更多

In order to explore the cell composition and its metabolism,it is important to let computer recognize the cells and get the counts of different cells for a sample.This paper proposes an L-shaped envelop function and the related fuzzy clustering method as a way to identify the megakaryocyte and the red cell from the sliced marrow image.This method is useful when the staining is insufficient and the color cannot be used as the identifying factor.This method uses the experimental histogram data to fit the L-shaped function and then use it as the envelop for the match test.The fuzzy c-means(FCM) performance index is used to test the adjacent area and get the minimum and finally secure the identification.The new method is not limited to megakaryocyte or red cell and can be used for general purposes of cell recognition.Tests show that this envelop function can ensure the recognition rate with different staining batches and can reach satisfied counting under similar illumination condition. 展开更多

Various microstructure-level finite element models were generated according to the real microstructure of DP590 steel to capture the mechanical behavior and fracture mode.The failure mode of the dual-phase(DP)steels,mainly resulting from microstructure-level inhomogeneity and initial geometrical imperfection,was predicted using the plastic strain localization theory.In addition,dog-bone-type tensile test specimens with different edge qualities were prepared and the deformation processes were recorded using a digital image correlation system.When the steel exhibited no initial geometrical imperfection,void initiation was triggered by decohesion between martensite and ferrite which was predicted based on the severe strain concentration,or tensile stress in areas where stress triaxiality and strain values were high.Final failure was caused by shear localization in the vicinity.Moreover,the initial geometrical imperfections severely affected the overall ductility and failure mode of the DP590steel.When initial geometrical imperfections were deeply ingrained,an incipient crack began at the site of initial geometrical imperfection,and then caused progressive damage throughout the microstructure,from the area of shear localization to the final fracture.Overall,the depth of the geometrical imperfection was the critical factor in determining whether internal decohesion or a local crack plays a dominant role. 展开更多
