Coherence analysis is a powerful tool in seismic interpretation for imaging geological discontinuities such as faults and fractures. However, subtle faults or fractures of one stratum are difficult to be distinguished on coherence sections (time slices or profiles) due to interferences from adjacent strata, especially these with strong reflectivity. In this paper, we propose a coherence enhancement method which applies local histogram specification (LHS) techniques to enhance subtle faults or fractures in the coherence cubes. Unlike the traditional histogram specification (HS) algorithm, our method processes 3D coherence data without discretization. This method partitions a coherence cube into many sub-blocks and self-adaptively specifies the target distribution in each block based on the whole distribution of the coherence cube. Furthermore, the neighboring blocks are partially overlapped to reduce the edge effect. Applications to real datasets show that the new method enhances the details of subtle faults and fractures noticeably. 展开更多

We designed the window function of the optimal Gabor transform based on the time-frequency rotation property of the fractional Fourier transform. Thus, we obtained the adaptive optimal Gabor transform in the fractional domain and improved the time-frequency concentration of the Gabor transform. The algorithm first searches for the optimal rotation factor, then performs the p-th FrFT of the signal and, finally, performs time and frequency analysis of the FrFT result. Finally, the algorithm rotates the plane in the fractional domain back to the normal time-frequency plane. This promotes the application of FrFT in the field of high-resolution reservoir prediction. Additionally, we proposed an adaptive search method for the optimal rotation factor using the Parseval principle in the fractional domain, which simplifies the algorithm. We carried out spectrum decomposition of the seismic signal, which showed that the instantaneous frequency slices obtained by the proposed algorithm are superior to the ones obtained by the traditional Gabor transform. The adaptive time frequency analysis is of great significance to seismic signal processing. 展开更多

The Hilbert-Huang transform(HHT) is a new analysis method suitable for nonlinear and non-stationary signals. It is very appropriate to seismic signals because they show both non-stationary and nonlinear characteristics. We first introduce the realization of HHT empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and then comparatively analyze three instantaneous frequency algorithms based on intrinsic mode functions(IMF) resulting from EMD,of which one uses the average instantaneous frequency of two sample intervals having higher resolution which can determine that the signal frequency components change with time. The method is used with 3-D poststack migrated seismic data of marine carbonate strata in southern China to effectively extract the three instantaneous attributes. The instantaneous phase attributes of the second intrinsic mode functions(IMF2) better describe the reef facies of the platform margin and the IMF2 instantaneous frequency attribute has better zoning.Combining analysis of the three IMF2 instantaneous seismic attributes and drilling data can identify the distribution of sedimentary facies well. 展开更多

The first generation coherence algorithm(namely C1 algorithm) is based on the statistical cross-correlation theory, which calculates the coherency of seismic data along both in-line and cross-line. The work, based on texture technique, makes full use of seismic information in different directions and the difference of multi-traces, and proposes a novel methodology named the texture coherence algorithm for seismic reservoir characterization, for short TEC algorithm. Besides, in-line and cross-line directions, it also calculates seismic coherency in 45° and 135° directions deviating from in-line. First, we clearly propose an optimization method and a criterion which structure graylevel co-occurrence matrix parameters in TEC algorithm. Furthermore, the matrix to measure the difference between multi-traces is constructed by texture technique, resulting in horizontal constraints of texture coherence attribute. Compared with the C1 algorithm, the TEC algorithm based on graylevel matrix is of the feature that is multi-direction information fusion and keeps the simplicity and high speed, even it is of multi-trace horizontal constraint, leading to significantly improved resolution. The practical application of the TEC algorithm shows that the TEC attribute is superior to both the C1 attribute and amplitude attribute in identifying faults and channels, and it is as successful as the third generation coherence. 展开更多

Spectral decomposition has been widely used in the detection and identifi cation of underground anomalous features(such as faults, river channels, and karst caves). However, the conventional spectral decomposition method is restrained by the window function, and hence,it mostly has low time–frequency focusing and resolution, thereby hampering the fi ne interpretation of seismic targets. To solve this problem,we investigated the sparse inverse spectral decomposition constrained by the lp norm(0<p≤1).Using a numerical model,we demonstrated the higher time–frequency resolution of this method and its capability for improving the seismic interpretation for thin layers. Moreover, given the actual underground geology that can be often complex,we further propose a p-norm constrained inverse spectral attribute interpretation method based on multiresolution time–frequency feature fusion.By comprehensively analyzing the time–frequency spectrum results constrained by the diff erent p-norms,we can obtain more refined interpretation results than those obtained by the traditional strategy, which incorporates a single norm constraint. Finally, the proposed strategy was applied to the processing and interpretation of actual three-dimensional seismic data for a study area covering about 230 km^(2) in western China. The results reveal that the surface water system in this area is characterized by stepwise convergence from a higher position in the north(a buried hill)toward the south and by the development of faults. We thus demonstrated that the proposed method has huge application potential in seismic interpretation. 展开更多

We focus on the robust detection of salt domes from seismic surveys. We discuss a novel feature-ranking classification model for saltdome detection for seismic images using an optimal set of texture attributes. The proposed algorithm overcomes the limitations of existing texture attribute-based techniques, which heavily depend on the relevance of the attributes to the geological nature of salt domes and the number of attributes used for accurate detection. The algorithm combines the attributes from the Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), the Gabor filters, and the eigenstructure of the covariance matrix with feature ranking using the information content. The top-ranked attributes are combined to form the optimal feature set, which ensures that the algorithm works well even in the absence of strong reflectors along the salt-dome boundaries. Contrary to existing salt-dome detection techniques, the proposed algorithm is robust and eomputationally efficient, and works with small-sized feature sets. I used the Netherlands F3 block to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results suggest that the proposed workflow based on information theory can detect salt domes with accuracy superior to existing salt-dome detection techniques. 展开更多

We present a new edge based approach for salt dome detection in migrated 3D seismic data. The proposed algorithm overcomes the drawbacks of existing edge-based techniques which only consider edges in the x (crossline) and y (inline) directions in 2D data and the x (crossline), y (inline), and z (time) directions in 3D data. The algorithm works by combining 3D gradient maps computed along diagonal directions and those computed in x, y, and z directions to accurately detect the boundaries of salt regions. The combination of x, y, and z directions and diagonal edges ensures that the proposed algorithm works well even if the dips along the salt boundary are represented only by weak reflectors. Contrary to other edge and texture based salt dome detection techniques, the proposed algorithm is independent of the amplitude variations in seismic data. We tested the proposed algorithm on the publicly available Netherlands offshore F3 block. The results suggest that the proposed algorithm can detect salt bodies with high accuracy than existing gradient based and texture-based techniques when used separately. More importantly, the proposed approach is shown to be computationally efficient allowing for real time implementation and deployment. 展开更多

In order to carry out numerical simulation using geologic structural data obtained from Landmark(seismic interpretation system), underground geological structures are abstracted into mechanical models which can reflect actual situations and facilitate their computation and analyses.Given the importance of model building, further processing methods about traditional seismic interpretation results from Landmark should be studied and the processed result can then be directly used in numerical simulation computations.Through this data conversion procedure, Landmark and FLAC(the international general stress software) are seamlessly connected. Thus, the format conversion between the two systems and the pre-and post-processing in simulation computation is realized.A practical application indicates that this method has many advantages such as simple operation, high accuracy of the element subdivision and high speed, which may definitely satisfy the actual needs of floor grid cutting. 展开更多

Discernment of seismic soil liquefaction is a complex and non-linear procedure that is affected by diversified factors of uncertainties and complexity. The Bayesian belief network(BBN)is an effective tool to present a suitable framework to handle insights into such uncertainties and cause–effect relationships. The intention of this study is to use a hybrid approach methodology for the development of BBN model based on cone penetration test(CPT)case history records to evaluate seismic soil liquefaction potential. In this hybrid approach, naive model is developed initially only by an interpretive structural modeling(ISM)technique using domain knowledge(DK).Subsequently, some useful information about the naive model are embedded as DK in the K2 algorithm to develop a BBN-K2 and DK model. The results of the BBN models are compared and validated with the available artificial neural network(ANN)and C4.5 decision tree(DT)models and found that the BBN model developed by hybrid approach showed compatible and promising results for liquefaction potential assessment. The BBN model developed by hybrid approach provides a viable tool for geotechnical engineers to assess sites conditions susceptible to seismic soil liquefaction. This study also presents sensitivity analysis of the BBN model based on hybrid approach and the most probable explanation of liquefied sites, owing to know the most likely scenario of the liquefaction phenomenon. 展开更多

It is very important to comprehensively interpret areal seismic data with geological data in a research area. For the structural interpretations in the middle depression of the eastern basin of Liaohe oilfield, we first analyze and study geological phenomena on outcrop pictures collected in the field and establish geological outcrop models. Second, we make fault and structural interpretations based on the structural characteristics of the outcrop pictures. Third, we analyze the migration, accumulation, and formation of oil and gas using characteristics of seismic profiles. By geologic and geophysical comprehensive interpretation, it is inferred that, in the research area, the dominant factor controlling oil and gas accumulation is strike-slip faults. Structural modes and the relationship of the oil and gas in the Huangshatuo and Oulituozi oil fields are also analyzed and investigated. 展开更多

Deep learning technologies are increasingly used in the fi eld of geophysics, and a variety of algorithms based on shallow convolutional neural networks are more widely used in fault recognition, but these methods are usually not able to accurately identify complex faults. In this study, using the advantage of deep residual networks to capture strong learning features,we introduce residual blocks to replace all convolutional layers of the three-dimensional(3D)UNet to build a new 3D Res-UNet and select appropriate parameters through experiments to train a large amount of synthesized seismic data. After the training is completed,we introduce the mechanism of knowledge distillation.First,we treat the 3D Res-UNet as a teacher network and then train the 3D Res-UNet as a student network;in this process, the teacher network is in evaluation mode. Finally,we calculate the mixed loss function by combining the teacher model and student network to learn more fault information, improve the performance of the network, and optimize the fault recognition eff ect.The quantitative evaluation result of the synthetic model test proves that the 3D Res-UNet can considerably improve the accuracy of fault recognition from 0.956 to 0.993 after knowledge distillation, and the eff ectiveness and feasibility of our method can be verifi ed based on the application of actual seismic data. 展开更多

What are the anomalous seismic reflection bodies at depths of over 6000m?Are they reefs or igneous rock? This is a difficult problem for seismic techniques, but the GMES technique can handle it .The GMES technique is a joint exploration technique combining gravity, magnetic, electrical, and seismic techniques. The specific procedure is to conduct a 2D interface-constrained CEMP inversion using 2D seismic and log data followed by a property parameter inversion of the anomalous bodics using gravity and seismic data by the stripping technique. We then estimate the physical properties ofthe anomalous bodies, such as density, susceptibility, resistivity, velocity, and etc.to deduce the geological features of the bodies and provide a basis for drilling decisions. The work in the TZ area reported in this paper shows the applicability of the technique. 展开更多

In this paper, using focal mechanism solutions of moderate-strong earthquakes in Yunnan and its adjacent areas, and based on the statistical analysis of the parameters of focal mechanism solutions, we discussed in detail the earthquake fault types and the characteristics of the modern tectonic stress field in the Yunnan region. The results show that most moderate-strong earthquakes occurring in the Yunnan region are of the strike-slip type, amounting to 80% of the total. Normal faulting and normal with strike-slip and reverse and reverse with strike-slip earthquakes is almost equivalent in proportion, about 8% each. The tectonic stress field of the Yunnan region is near-horizontal, and the dips of earthquake fault planes are large. There are three main dynamic sources acting on the Yunnan region: one is the NE, NNE and NNW-directed acting force from Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam; the second is the SE-SSE directed force from the Sichuan and Sichuan-Yunnan rhombus block and the third is the NW-NNW directed force from the South China block. These three acting forces have controlled the faulting behavior of the main faults and the characteristics of strong earthquake activity of Yunnan and its adjacent regions. 展开更多

The root mean square(RMS) difference of time-lapse seismic amplitudes is routinely used to identify the substituted fluid type in a reservoir during oil field production and recovery. By a time-lapse seismic method, we study the effects of fluid substitution in a physical model, which is an analogy of the three-dimensional inhomogeneous reservoir. For a weak inhomogeneous medium, gas/oil substitution results in positive anomalies in the reservoir layers, and negative anomalies below the bottom of the reservoir layers; while water/oil substitution causes only weak variations in the reservoir layers, but positive anomalies below the bottom of the reservoir layers. For the strong inhomogeneous medium, no matter what kind of fluid substitution(gas/oil or water/oil), there are significant anomalies in seismic amplitude difference attributes both in and below the reservoir layers. Therefore, for weak inhomogeneous media, such as tight sandstone or thin interbedded layers, the RMS amplitude difference attributes can be used to monitor fluid changes and predict the drilling direction; for inhomogeneous medium with karst carves or fractures, it is difficult to accurately determine the distribution of fluids with the RMS amplitude difference attributes. 展开更多

The earthquake mitigation effect of hysteretic dampers is not only related to the number, stiffness, strength, deformation ability of dampers but also to the strength and stiffness of the structure. This paper studied the condition that structures should be in when the hysteretic dampers mitigated seismic action most effectively and made appropriate numerical analysis to verify the effectiveness of theory derivation. The inelastic seismic responses were analyzed for the SDOF system that the shear strength ratio of the damper system was taken differently and the result showed that when the ratio was in the vicinity of the optimum strength ratio of the damper system, the displacement of the structure was minimum and the energy dissipation of dampers was maximum, which indicated that the dampers mitigated seismic action most effectively. The result also indicated that the hysteretic dampers had significant earthquake mitigation effect when the strength ratio β changed in a relatively wide range. 展开更多

The Lamuajue landslide is located in Lamuajue village on the tight bank of the Meigu River, Sichuan Province, China. This landslide is an ancient landslide with an extremely wide distribution area, covering an area of 19 km2 with a maximum width of 5-5 km and an estimated residual volume of 3 × 108 ma. The objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics and failure mechanism of this landslide. In this study, based on field investigations, aerial photography, and profile surveys, the boundary, lithology, structure of the strata, and characteristics of the landslide deposits were determined. A gently angled weak interlayer consisting of shale was the main factor contributing to the occurrence of the Lamuajue landslide. The deposition area can be divided into three zones: zone A is an avalanche deposition area mainly composed of blocks, fragments, and debris with diameters ranging from o.i m to 3 m; zone B is a residual integrated rock mass deposition area with large blocks, boulders and "fake bedrock"; and zone C is a deposition zone of limestone blocks and fragments. Three types of failure mechanism were analyzed and combined to explain the Lamuajue landslide based on the features of the accumulation area. First, a shattering-sliding mechanism caused by earthquakes in zone A. Second, a sliding mechanism along the weak intercalation caused by gravity and water in zone B. Third, a shattering-ejection mechanism generated by earthquakes in zone C. The results provide a distinctive case for the study of gigantic landslides induced by earthquakes, which is very important for understanding and assessing ancient earthquakeinduced landslides. 展开更多

A M_L3.8 earthquake occurred on February 23,2014 in Rongchang County, which is located at the southern edge of the Sichuan Basin in the border area between Sichuan and Chongqing. This paper presents results of focal mechanism solution of this earthquake using the CAP( cut and paste) method based on broadband seismograms recorded by regional seismic stations. Our results show that the moment magnitude is M_W3. 09 and focal depth is 3km. The hypocenter of this earthquake is located close to a buried fault in the Luoguangshan anticline. Oil prospecting and deep drilling data indicate that this buried fault is a thrust fault, striking SW230°,dipping NW45°,and 1. 7km deep. There are some injection wells within the anticline, and significant injection-induced earthquakes were observed during the periods of injection of waste water into the deep formations through those wells. The best double couple solution of the M_L3.8 earthquake is 247°,48°and 104° for strike, dip and rate, respectively, for one nodal plane( and 46°,44° and 74°for another nodal plane),which is in agreement with the geometry of the buried fault. Therefore,we conclude that the M_L3.8 Rongchang earthquake is possibly the result of faulting along the buried reverse fault induced by water injection under the compressive stress regime in the area. 展开更多

On Jan.31 of 2010,the Suining earthquake occurred at Suining City whch is located the center of Sichuan Basin. It is unusual for the strong earthquake to occur at the center of Sichuan Basin with a stable geotectonic environment and a low-level historical seismicity. The macro-epicenter of the earthquake is located at Moxi town of Suining city,Sichuan province,China. The earthquake intensity of the epicenter area is degree VII,and the long axis of the isoseismal line trends in NE orientation. The Suining earthquake caused the collapse or destruction of 460 family houses. The earthquake focal mechanism solution and records of the near-field seismographic stations showed the earthquake occurred at the reverse fault at a depth 34 km.Based on the waveform and focal mechanism,we consider the Suning earthquake is triggered by the reverse fault and not by the gravitational collapse or man-made explosive sources.Basing on seismic refraction profile and borehole,we consider that the earthquake is triggered by the backthrust fault of Moxi anticline rooted in detachments at a depth 3-4 km.Furthermore,we infer that tectonic mechanism of the Suining(Ms5.0) Earthquake is driven by the horizontal crustal shortening and stress adjustment on a shallow detachment after the Wenchuan(Ms 8.0) earthquake. 展开更多
