Traditional low-cost methods requiring minimal user skill or training are still popular among professionals, scientists, and coastal zone management practitioners. Simple methods are being developed with a primary focus on sand and gravel beaches. This paper describes a simple, low-cost, manual field method for measuring profiles of beaches, which is particularly suitable for muddy shores. The equipment is a type of flexible U-tube manometer that uses liquid columns in vertical tubes to measure differences in elevation; the supporting frame is constructed from wooden poles with base disks, which hold measuring scales and a PVC tube. The structure was trialed on a mudflat characterized by a 20~0-cm-thick surface layer of silt and clay, located at the Kutubdia Island, Bangladesh. The study results are discussed with notes on the method's applicability, advantages and limitations, and several optional modifications for different scenarios for routine profiling of muddy shores. The equipment can be used by one person or two people, and the accuracy of the method is comparable to those in other methods. The equipment can also be used on sandy or gravel beaches.展开更多

It revealed a great palaeoenvironmental information's about habitat changing of Lake Qarun from a humid and wet conditions during the Hellenic Period to reed swampy early Roman, to Nile Flooding middle Roman, to mesophytic habitats Late Roman, also changing to halophytic and salt marshes with presence of Chenopodiaceae at recent time. Using indicator plants and their remains i.e. pollen grains and spores, palynological studies of different soil strata revealed that, presence of 13 pollen and spore types e.g. Lycopodium, Typhaceae type, Juncaceae, Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Tamaricaceae, Onagraceae and Lamiaceae. The data obtained were valuable in reconstruct past vegetation and habitats conditions of Lake Qarun during Helleno Roman period.展开更多

Active coastal marine environmental exploitation has given rise to another problem: marine litter. The period of time allowing to evaluate the change in the degree of the shore pollution with litter is that from 1999 till 2014. Litter can be classified both by qualitative and quantitative character. Regarding qualitative character litter is divided into organic substance (garbage, wood) and non-organic substance (glass, plastics, rubber, metal). As to the size there are three categories: small, middle, large. As to small litter it is still predominating in the litter structure of the shoreline pollution but its average amount has been decreased significantly. As to the litter distribution, it is mostly concentrated within the beach zone. It is thus natural to assume the land-based origin of the litter, such as litter brought by holiday-makers or introduced by nearby enterprises.展开更多

It occupies a 2.5 km long of coastline on the Atlantic shore. It is oriented NNE-SSW, clearly exposed to the dominant swells coming from west to northwest. The aim of this study is to determine the capacity of the waves that hit the shore to transport the sediments. To achieve our goal we chose a methodology that combines field sampling and laboratory analysis with digital modeling. In the first phase we sampled sediments from the study area along and across the beach line, dry sieving was used to determine the grain size distribution and the statistics derived from the sand samples were used to determine the critical shield stress (z'cr, b) also to investigate the spatial variability and influence of transport on grain size characteristics. As for the second phase, we intended to create a wave climate modeling based on nautical chart, using ArcGIS then Matlab that allowed us to obtain the Swan model for the area. The correlation between those results showed the degree of contribution of wave in the distribution of sediments along the shore.展开更多

The flow caused by the infiltration of the terminal slope stability will induce a great impact on the slope stability of wharf.. This paper uses an ideal elastic-plastic model and the Moore Coulomb yield criterion for numerical simulation. Through the b an k slop e stability of the overhead-type terminal s under the changes of water, we obtained the impact of all factors on the bank slope in the course of water lowering. It was found out that the impact from the cohesion of the geo-materials of the bank slope on the slope stability is greater than that from the internal friction angle.展开更多

But many designers generalize a line as the phreatie surface through their experience to analyze the stability, which is unsafe in the project. To find a solution of the phreatic surface which is convenient to put into use and in accordance with the practice, the article, based on Boussinesq equation, infers analytic solutions suitable to the water level at different ratios and achieves an analytic solution equation through fitting curves. The correctness of the equation is also proved by the experiments of sand and sand-clay models and the inaccuracy of empirical generalization is analyzed quantitatively. The calculation results show that the inaccuracy through the method of experiential generalizing is so large that the designers should be awake to it.展开更多

The former deals with the journey across the Mexican-American border in a literal sense; the latter describes the metaphorical borderlands separating Latina/os from Anglo-Americans in the USA. Nava's depictions emphasize family to counter the popular media stereotypes of Chicana/o as gang members. "El Norte" expresses immigrants' displacement and disillusionment with the American Dream, while "Mi Familia" places Mexicans within the history of LA (Los Angeles) and translates Latina/o culture into a narrative familiar to the mainstream audience.展开更多
