The existence of relatively high concentration maintains a large ^222Rn, ^220Rn concentration gradient between the materials and open air. The present paper deals with the experimental measurement of ^222Rn, ^220Rn concentrations and the associated inhalation dose rates due to them in the dwellings of different characteristics. Higher concentrations and dose rates were observed in lower volume houses and the houses with granite flooring. 展开更多

There is great interest in the use of natural fibers as reinforcement to obtain new construction materials due to its low cost, high availability and reduced energy consumption for its production. This paper evaluates the incorporation of sisal fibers of 20 mm and 40 mm in length and volume fraction of 0.5% and 1% for concrete masonry structural blocks, and determines the use of these units to build prisms and mini-walls. Laboratory tests were carried out to characterize the physical of blocks and mortar, in addition to the axial compression tests of the units, prisms, and mini-walls. The sisal had low apparent density and high water absorption, which is a common feature of such material due to the high incidence of permeable pores. The physical properties of the blocks with and without addition complied with the standard requirements established to validate their use. The obtained results showed that the fiber-reinforced mini-walls obtained values very close to or even higher than those obtained for the mini-walls without fibers, demonstrating better performance than the blocks and prisms. 展开更多

The behavior of building materials in constructions of civil structures is influenced by the surrounding moisture and it is a crucial for intensively examined field of the construction physics. Most standard building materials are characterized by a porous structure, which results in the ability to receive water in a liquid as well as gaseous form in the inner pores. The water fills the storage space of pores under certain conditions; it is transported and transferred back to the surroundings. Many technical studies show that the moisture monitoring is prevailingly based on experiments. Previous calculating methods introduced, e.g., by Glaser, which became the basis for the standard calculations in many European countries in the 1960s, are not always sufficient with respect to the demands of the civil structures. The moisture influences thermo-insulating properties of the material. By a change of the thermo insulation properties of the construction also the thermal and diffusion scheme of the construction is changed and its thermal resistance is decreasing. Faults in the thermo-technical projects occur when thermal conductivity coefficient L values for material in a dry state are substituted. The aim of the research is to determine the capillary conductivity coefficient as a characteristic material moisture parameter of the building materials by the means of a non-destructive method using the experimentally assembled apparatus developed at the Department of Civil Engineering, Brno University of Technology.
