Conceptual metaphors belong to traditional vocabulary metaphors, and ideational grammatical metaphors are pointed out by Halliday--the main representative of systemic-functional theory. This paper elaborates on the specific grammatical feature of EST (English for Science and Technology) text--"nominalization of processes" to reveal the source of ideational metaphors. From the analysis of some examples, it is found that nominalization as a grammatical metaphor expresses the transference between process types, so it reveals the essence of ideational grammatical metaphors. Meanwhile, the comparison made between grammatical metaphors and vocabulary metaphors reflects the similarities between conceptual metaphors and ideational metaphors. In this way, this paper comes to the conclusion that the combination of the study methods of metaphors from both cognitive and systemic-functional perspectives is the best way to uncover the basic characteristic of human thinking.展开更多

However, this concept is still not really understood, when it is referred for instance to consciousness and its informational structure. In this paper it is followed the concept of information from philosophical to physics perspective, showing especially how this concept could be extended to matter in general and to the living in particular, as a result of the intimate interaction between matter and information, the human body appearing as a bipolar informed-matter structure. It is detailed on this way how this concept could be referred to consciousness, and an informational modeling of consciousness as an informational system of the human body is presented. Based on the anatomic architecture of the organism and on the inference of the specific information concepts, it is shown that the informational system of the human body could be described by seven informational subsystems, which are reflected in consciousness as corresponding cognitive centers. These results are able to explain the main properties of consciousness, both the cognitive and extra-cognitive properties of the mind, like that observed during the near-death experiences and other similar phenomena. Moreover, the results of such a modeling are compared with the existing empirical concepts and models on the energetic architecture of the organism, showing their relevance for the understanding of consciousness.展开更多

Public sculpture is almost exclusively memorial sculpture and it reflects the predominant values of the national identity. This paper constitutes the first analysis of current historical and cultural perceptions in the southern part of the island through these visual representations and the ceremonial behaviors they generate. Characteristic cases of memorials presented here prove that commemoration in the Republic of Cyprus is inextricably linked to location which is either associated with an actual event of death, or draws power from its relation to culturally symbolic institutional buildings. The memorials illustrate the blending of private and public sphere and, respectively, private and social identity of the deceased. They prove that the affinities between heroism and sanctity within the Greek cultural milieu have imbued the social subconscious and impacted significantly on the collective recollections and the national narratives. This paper focuses on the aesthetics of the memorials which, due to their affinities with tombs in Greek and Cypriot cemeteries, lack affirmative hope, healing and closure of the trauma. On the contrary, they persist in portraying victimhood as a state of being.展开更多

No transformation is irreversible enough to destroy the experiences of the past, unified as a core in tradition. Those come into light whenever the proper conditions are created. From the point of view of architecture, representation is the basis for the transmission of knowledge, ideas, feelings, etc. The method of the paper is to put in antithesis two concepts which define the present world of representation: real (associated to transcendent revelation) and virtual (understood as result of human imagination). An itinerary through the philosophy of Plato and Plotin, ancient Greek, Byzantine, Gothic architecture, etc., is proposed, until encountering the moment of the death of revelation and the birth of the arbitrary, which is connected to the supremacy of the image. This journey through aesthetic conceptions brought major changes in art and society during the centuries. Recuperation of the involvement of all human senses into perception of space and understanding of the built environment of life as revelation, and not as a simple interface of images, may lead now to a revolution of urban spirit, based on a relationship with the city inspired from the values promoted by Socrates and later developed into Christianity, that proved their permanence across the millenniums.展开更多

It is generally accepted that a holistic approach is essential in sustainability studies, but teaching such a new and complex topic to a diverse student population is by no means easy. In this study, sustainability is viewed in the context of Systems Thinking, particularly in Complexity Management domain. A general framework is proposed with the intension of guiding potential instructors who are planning to teach sustainability through Systems Thinking. The framework includes only the suggested systems-oriented material and a review of some system methodologies; it does not cover sustainability issues. Methodologies known as System Dynamics and Soft Cybernetics are explored and emphasized particularly in the paper due to their importance. The framework is kept general enough so that it appeals to students and instructors with a variety of background.展开更多

This paper propounds its theoretical basis by reflecting on the philosophical and linguistic trends in modern era, and points out the defects of Danesi's theory, insisting that conceptual fluency should be built on both the lexical and grammatical levels. It then exemplifies the implementation of the theory in actual teaching practice.展开更多

Centred upon the concept of a "differential mode of criminalization," this article argues that the Confucianization of law in traditional China emphasized without ambiguity the implications of the closeness/remoteness in human rela- tionships-the measure of distance conditioned upon the two main loci in everyday life, namely blood and non-blood relationships. This differential mode of criminalization fits into the Confucian imagery of a harmonious society.展开更多
