Not much research is done to examine lower intermediate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' performance on the reading section of the First Certificate of English exam (FCER) in the post strategy instruction period. The results indicate that learners vary not only in terms of their performance on the FCER, hut also on the employed metacognitive strategy. Furthermore, metacognitive strategies are the only predictors that positively predict learners' performance in the FCER.展开更多

However, learning another language does not occur identically among all students. Some students learn a language, even their own mother tongue earlier but some others may need to spend more time acquiring a language. Seeking out for the probable reasons for such a difference, the current study following the constructivist approach to language learning and bearing in mind the role of society and human communities in language learning, was concluded to investigate the probable impact(s) of some social variables (social status, attitudinal and motivational status of learners) on language learning outcomes of Iranian adult learners assessed through a standardized English proficiency test. The findings have revealed that the social milieu in which learners live may play a decisive role as far as learning opportunities, input and resources are concerned.展开更多

The subjects are 30 non-English-major freshmen who were randomly chosen from among 150 candidates. It was found that: 1) the subjects perform significantly better in summary writing task for the narrative text than the expository one of the same difficulty level while in multiple-choice task the difference between performances for two text types is not significant; 2) for the same narrative text, summary writing task tends to elicit significantly better general test performance than the multiple-choice one while for the same expository text, there is no significant difference between the test performances elicited by the two tasks; 3)scores in the summary writing tasks for both texts are more widely distributed than those in the multiple choice ones.展开更多

The data indicated that teachers were confident in their computer use and understood formative assessment notions and their role in technology-enhanced teaching and learning. However, concerns were raised on the writing rubrics interpretation, the pedagogy on integrating AWE into teaching, and the suitability of the whole English software to Chinese learners. Solutions and suggestions were discussed. Sample lesson plans, pedagogy training and technical support were considered necessary for the participating teachers.展开更多
