According to the first, learning difficulties are due to the intrinsic characteristics of the student. For supporters of the second perspective, those difficulties result from the interaction between the student and the school system. The objective of this study is to test the validity of these two perspectives in interpreting learning difficulties in mathematics among at-risk students. To this end, we collaborated with normally achieving (undiagnosed) and at-risk students. A conformal structure of a prion protein is thought to cause a prion disease by S.B. Prusiner's theory. Knot theory in mathematics is useful in studying a topological difference of topological objects. In this article, concerning this conjecture, a topological model of prion proteins (PrPc, PrPsc) called a prion-tangle is introduced to discuss a question of whether or not the prion proteins are easily entangled by an approach from the mathematical knot theory. It is noted that any prion-string with trivial loop which is a topological model of a prion protein can not be entangled topologically unless a certain restriction such as "Rotaxsane Property" is imposed on it. Nevertheless, it is shown that any two split prion-tangles can be changed by a one-crossing change into a non-split prion-tangle with the given prion-tangles contained while some attentions are paid to the loop systems. The proof is made by a mathematical argument on knot theory of spatial graphs. This means that the question above is answered affirmatively in this topological model of prion-tangles. Next, a question of what is the simplest topological situation of the non-split prion-tangles is considered. By a mathematical argument, it is determined for every n 〉 1 that the minimal crossing number of n-string non-split prion-tangles is 2n or 2n-2, respectively, according to whether or not the assumption that the loop system is a trivial link is counted. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)diagnosis is a unique disease diagnosis method with thousands of years of TCM theory and effective experience.Its thinking mode in the process is different from that of modern medicine,which includes the essence of TCM theory.From the perspective of clinical application,the four diagnostic methods of TCM,including inspection,auscultation and olfaction,inquiry,and palpation,have been widely accepted by TCM practitioners worldwide.With the rise of artificial intelligence(AI)over the past decades,AI based TCM diagnosis has also grown rapidly,marked by the emerging of a large number of data-driven deep learning models.In this paper,our aim is to simply but systematically review the development of the data-driven technologies applied to the four diagnostic approaches,i.e.the four examinations,in TCM,including data sets,digital signal acquisition devices,and learning based computational algorithms,to better analyze the development of AI-based TCM diagnosis,and provide references for new research and its applications in TCM settings in the future. 展开更多

This mini-review focuses on the question of how home numeracy experience (i.e.,number-related activities at home) may affect a child's numeracy development. Evidence from young children suggests that trajectories of number learning differ for children having different home numeracy experiences. Children involved in higher frequency of direct numeracy practice tend to have higher numeracy skills, but the result becomes more complicated when considering the types of home numeracy activities. The relationship between the home numeracy experience and preschool children's nurneracy development may shed light on how children acquire number skills and develop their mathematics competence. 展开更多

This paper is on the study of motivational changes of Chinese non-English major students in their first two years of college English learning. The current study was carried out through the quantitative research method. The research question to be addressed is:During the first two years of college English learning, does non-English majors' learning motivation (i.e. types of motivation and motivational intensity) change? The analyses of the data reveal that motivational changes do exist in the first two years of college English learning. Generally, most types of motivation (i.e. intrinsic interest motivation, information medium motivation, personal development motivation, and social responsibility motivation) decrease significantly except for the slight increase of immediate achievement motivation, and the decline of motivational intensity is also obvious. 展开更多
