This new definition presents an urgent need to acknowledge the gap between the types of reading experiences students come across at school and those they regularly practice outside the school. One way to bridge such gap is to expand the reading instruction to incorporate electronic reading device, like Kindle, to engage students in electronic reading. Many e-books feature multimodal functionalities, including audio, video, hyperlinks, and interactive tools. Research on this form of reading is still in its infancy in spite of some positive prospects for fostering literacy development and reading comprehension. Therefore, adopting a mixed method approach with 36 college freshmen in central Taiwan, the current study intended to fill in the void by investigating any difference in readers' reading comprehension and reading motivation, between the Kindle group and the print-based group. The results indicate that embedding aspects of technology into a traditional reading instruction boosted the participants' motivation to read. Nevertheless, the novelty-driven enthusiasm for electronic reading might not sustain students' reading motivation long enough to cultivate long-lasting reading habits. The results indicate that there was no significant difference in reading comprehension between two groups. Implications for utilizing electronic readers in EFL classes are also provided.展开更多

Such standards encourage independent and collaborative learning but may pose a challenge to the test-oriented English teaching in China. Pressed by the graduation and enrollment rates, do teachers still care for organizing extra-curricular reading If yes, are the methods they use effective and scientific To answer these questions, our research team conducted a two-year research in Beijing middle schools. The results show that extra-curricular reading has been implemented differently at different levels to different degrees. Some teachers have worked out feasible, successful methods in accord with international practices, some schools are just starting their experiments, and some have not made plans yet. By analyzing the favored organizing and monitoring methods, and evaluating their benefits and limits, this paper hopes to offer some implications to the researchers with the same endeavor.展开更多

From the 1990s on, however, it underwent a slow decline which has gained speed in the new century. The new media have played an important role in the process of its decline. Their influence is mainly seen in the reshaping of the receiver's perceptual structure because of the change from text to image and in the lack of stimulus to reflection and thought because of the change from page to screen. At the same time, the new media have broken down the "solitary" state of reading and lessened the depth of the reception model. From the perspective of media culture, the decline of literary reading is a result of the serious damage inflicted upon print culture by visual culture. The new generation is already living in an environment of visual culture; they will inevitably drift away from literary reading. This will have an impact on both production and research in literature. The private memory, perceptual structure and even bodily habits of those who preserve literary reading and resist the new media are precisely those established by print culture. Therefore, behind the clash between preserving and forsaking literary reading lies a clash between different media cultures.展开更多
