Methods: A retrospective investigation was conducted in 80 child patie... Objective: To investigate the time and postoperative binocular vision of strabismus surgery for children with intermittent exotropia (X(T)). Methods: A retrospective investigation was conducted in 80 child patients with intermittent exotropia. Pre- and postoperative angles of deviation fixating at near (33 cm) and distant targets (6 m) were measured with the prolonged alternate cover testing. The binocular function was assessed with synoptophore. Twenty-one patients took the postoperative synoptophore exercise. Results: (1) A week after surgery, 96.2% of the 80 patients had binocular normotopia, while a year after surgery, 91.3% of the 80 patients had binocular normotopia; (2) Preoperatively, 58 patients had near stereoacuity, while postoperatively, 72 patients achieved near stereoacuity (P〈0.05); (3) Preoperatively, 64 patients had Grade Ⅰ for the synoptophore evaluation and postoperatively, 76 patients achieved Grade Ⅰ. Meanwhile, 55 patients had Grade Ⅱ preoperatively and 72 achieved Grade Ⅱ postoperatively. For Grade Ⅲ, there were 49 patients preoperatively and 64 patients postoperatively (P〈0.05); (4) Patients of 5-8 years old had a significantly better recovery rate of binocular vision than those of 9-18 years old (P〈0.05); (5) Patients taking postoperative synoptophore exercise had a better binocular vision than those taking no exercise (P〈0.05). Conclusions: (1) Strabismus surgery can help to preserve or restore the binocular vision for intermittent exotropia; (2) Receiving the surgery at young ages may develop better postoperative binocular vision; (3) The postoperative synoptophore exercise can help to restore the binocular vision. 展开更多

Use of compressed mesh in parallel rendering architecture is still an unexplored area, the main challenge of which is to partition and sort the encoded mesh in compression-domain. This paper presents a mesh compression scheme PRMC (Parallel Rendering based Mesh Compression) supplying encoded meshes that can be partitioned and sorted in parallel rendering system even in encoded-domain. First, we segment the mesh into submeshes and clip the submeshes’ boundary into Runs, and then piecewise compress the submeshes and Runs respectively. With the help of several auxiliary index tables, compressed submeshes and Runs can serve as rendering primitives in parallel rendering system. Based on PRMC, we design and implement a parallel rendering architecture. Compared with uncompressed representation, experimental results showed that PRMC meshes applied in cluster parallel rendering system can dramatically reduce the communication requirement. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate tear film stability and tear secretion in patients with diabetes after phacoemulsification. Methods: Twenty-five diabetic cataract patients and 20 age-matched non-diabetic cataract patients as control underwent pha- coemulsification. Tear film break-up time (TFBUT), Schirmer I test (SIT), corneal fluorescein staining, and dry eye symptoms were measured pre- and postoperatively. Results: Diabetics had a decreased preoperative TFBUT and SIT. TFBUT was reduced on Day 1 and recovered on Day 180 postoperatively in both groups. SIT was increased after phacoemulsification, but returned to preoperative levels by Day 180 in non-diabetics, whereas it was lower than preoperative level in diabetics. Positive corneal fluo- rescein staining was elevated in both groups, and returned to preoperative levels only in controls. Dry eye symptoms were similar to fluorescein staining in both groups. Conclusion: Tear secretion was reduced in diabetic cataract patients after phacoe- mulsification, which worsened dry eye symptoms and predisposed those patients to ocular damage. 展开更多

Objective To study the effect of fundus pigment on the response of the retina to transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT). Methods The retina were irradiated with 810 nm diode laser in 16 eyes of 8 pigmented rabbits and 12 eyes of 6 albino rabbits. The spot size was 1.2 mm; the duration was 60 s; and powers were 50, 80, 150 and 300 mW for pigmented rabbits and 800, 1 200 and 1 500mW for albino rabbits. All of the eyes were followed up with ophthalmolscope. The fundus was photographed and examined histologically with optic microscope immediately and 1 month after TTT respectively. Results The changes of the fundus and the histological examination were not significant immediately and 1 month after TTT in 50 mW group of pigmented rabbit and 800 mW of albino rabbit. Grey spot on the retina was observed on the fundus in 80 mW group of pigmented rabbit and 1 200 mW of albino rabbit immediately after TTT. The structure of the retina remained intact and subretinal fluid was observed histologically. Grey spot was still visible on the fundus, though the fluid was absorbed after 1 month. As the power of diode laser was increased to 150 mW for pigmented rabbits and 1500 mW for albino rabbit, fundus white spots were observed and the outer retina was destroyed while photoreceptors existed immediately after TTT. Pigmentation was found in white lesions and the fibrous proliferation was found in choroid 1 month after TTT. Prominent white spot was seen on the fundus immediately after laser irradiation of 300 mW in pigmented rabbits and the structure of the retina was obscured. One month after TTT, dense pigmentation appeared at laser lesions. The retina was thinner. There was prominent fibrous proliferation in the choroid. Conclusion The fundus pigment seems to play an important role in the response of the retina to TTT. The reaction of the retina is in proportion to the intensity of laser. 展开更多

TREATMENT OF PRIMARY PALPEBRAL RETRACTION WITH ACUPOINT-INJECTION AND CHINESE MEDICINAL HERBS

In the present paper, the therapeutic effect of combined therapy of acupoint injection and Chinese medicinal herbs was observed in 59 cases of primary palpebral retraction patients. These 59 patients were divided into treatment group (n=38, treated with acupoint injection and Chinese medicinal herbs) and control group (n=21, treated with Chinese medicinal herbs alone). After 3 courses of treatment, of the 38 cases in treatment group, 25 (65.8%) were cured, 8 (21.1%) had marked improvement and 5 (13.2%) had improvement; of the 21 cases in control group, 8 (38.1%) were cured, 9 (42.9%) had marked improvement, 2 (9.5%) had improvement and 2 (9.5%) were ineffective. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the two groups in the therapeutic effect. The cure rate of experimental group was apparently higher than that of the control group, i.e. the therapeutic effect of the combined therapy of acupoint injection and Chinese medicinal herbs was superior to that of Chinese medicinal herbs alone. 展开更多

Retinoblastoma and treatment: A current evaluation of advanced therapy

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary childhood ocular tumor, affecting nearly 3.5 per million children worldwide. A mutation in the RB1 gene, which presents as either germline or sporadic, along with additional mutational events, promote neoplastic growth in the retina. Fortunately, current treatment protocols result in success rates approaching 99% at specialized centers, with many children maintaining useful vision. Overall, treatment is guided by aggressiveness and size, and is classified by systems such as the ReeseEllsworth System and the International Classification of Retinoblastoma. Due to advances in chemotherapy protocols combined with use of focal laser consolidation, treatment paradigms have shifted from enucleation to external beam radiation therapy to chemotherapy as globe-salvaging therapies. Smaller, less complex tumors may be controlled by plaque radiotherapy or focal laser ablative therapy. However, larger and more complex tumors, such as those that have vitreous or subretinal seeding, require methods of chemoreduction combined with focal consolidation to yield better outcomes. Standard chemotherapy protocols utilize vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin with or withoutcyclophosphamide. Finally, there has been a recent push in local treatments for retinoblastoma to minimize systemic toxicities. These modalities include intravitreal or subconjunctival injections and more recently, direct chemotherapy administration into the ophthalmic artery. As a result, enucleation is used less often, but remains an important treatment for the most aggressive, refractory cases. The advancement of retinoblastoma treatment looks promising; however, worldwide access to these treatments and the lack of long-term followup of new local treatment modalities constitute current and future challenges. 展开更多

It is well known that the ocular contour was characterized by its skin structure relevant to fillings of soft tissue and concave-convex bones. With aging, it changed a lot due to the volume loss of soft tissue. In recent studies, the aging process of the Asians whose eyelids flled with more soft tissue had signifcant impacts on the ocular contour. The aim of our work was to investigate the changes of the ocular contour of Asian people and establish a curve to describe it. In this study, it was demonstrated that the aging was not only linked to the distance between the inferior border of palpebral bag and the midpoint of palpebral fissure, but also correlated with the angle between palpebral fissure and the facial midline. Therefore, “Youthful Curve of Ocular Region” was established with measurements based on mentioned two areas. This curve went through the regions of upper and lower eyelid area and palpebral bags area. In addition, by using multivariate linear regression, a mathematical model to analyze this curve was obtained. The mathematical model was a crucial supplement to evaluate appearance age of ocular region in Asian people. Moreover, it had great potential in developments of anti-aging effects of eye cosmetics. 展开更多

The eye is a highly protected organ, and designing an effective therapy is often considered a challenging task. The anatomical and physiological barriers result in low ocular bioavailability of drugs. Due to these constraints, less than 5% of the administered dose is absorbed from the conventional ophthalmic dosage forms. Further, physicochemical properties such as lipophilicity, molecular weight and charge modulate the permeability of drug molecules. Vision-threatening diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic macular edema, cataract, wet and dry age-related macular degeneration, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, uveitis, and cytomegalovirus retinitis alter the pathophysiological and molecular mechanisms. Understanding these mechanisms may result in the development of novel treatment modalities. Recently, transporter/receptor targeted prodrug approach has generated significant interest in ocular drug delivery. These transporters and receptors are involved in the transport of essential nutrients, vitamins, and xenobiotics across biological membranes. Several influx transporters(peptides, amino acids, glucose, lac-tate and nucleosides/nucleobases) and receptors(folate and biotin) have been identified on conjunctiva, cornea, and retina. Structural and functional delineation of these transporters will enable more drugs targeting the posterior segment to be successfully delivered topically. Prodrug derivatization targeting transporters and receptors expressed on ocular tissues has been the subject of intense research. Several prodrugs have been designed to target these transporters and enhance the absorption of poorly permeating parent drug. Moreover, this approach might be used in gene delivery to modify cellular function and membrane receptors. This review provides comprehensive information on ocular drug delivery, with special emphasis on the use of transporters and receptors to improve drug bioavailability. 展开更多

Vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR) is an important biological reflex that controls eye movement to ensure clear vision while the head is in motion.Nowadays,VOR measurement is commonly done with a video head impulse test based on a velocity gain algorithm or a position gain algorithm,in which velocity gain is a VOR calculation on head and eye velocity,whereas position gain is calculated from head and eye position.The aim of this work is first to compare the two algorithms' performance and to detect covert catch-up saccade,then to propose a stand-alone recommendation application for the patient's diagnosis.In the first experiment,for ipsilesional and contralesional sides,the calculated position gain(0.94±0.17) is higher than velocity gain(0.84±0.19).Moreover,gain asymmetry of both lesion and intact sides using velocity gain is mostly higher than that from using position gain(four out of five subjects).Consequently,for subjects who have unilateral vestibular neuritis diagnosed from clinical symptoms and a vestibular function test,vestibular weakness is depicted by velocity gain much better than by position gain.Covert catch-up saccade and position gain then are used as inputs for recommendation applications. 展开更多

Despite the fact that progress in face recognition algorithms over the last decades has been made, changing lighting conditions and different face orientation still remain as a challenging problem. A standard face recognition system identifies the person by comparing the input picture against pictures of all faces in a database and finding the best match. Usually face matching is carried out in two steps: during the first step detection of a face is done by finding exact position of it in a complex background (various lightning condition), and in the second step face identification is performed using gathered databases. In reality detected faces can appear in different position and they can be rotated, so these disturbances reduce quality of the recognition algorithms dramatically. In this paper to increase the identification accuracy we propose original geometric normalization of the face, based on extracted facial feature position such as eyes. For the eyes localization lbllowing methods has been used: color based method, mean eye template and SVM (Support Vector Machine) technique. Experimental investigation has shown that the best results for eye center detection can be achieved using SVM technique. The recognition rate increases statistically by 28% using face orientation normalization based on the eyes position. 展开更多

Objective To observe the analgesic effect on herpes zoster treated by the comprehensive therapy of blocking, surrounding needling, pricking and cupping combined with bloodletting at Longyan (龙眼, Extra) acupoint. Methods According to the random mumber table, 104 cases of herpes zoster were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 52 cases in each one. In the observation group, the blocking method was used at the starting site and the ending site of herpetic zone, the surrounding needling method was applied toward the center of the painful zone, with horizontal needling technique; and the local pricking and cupping methods as well as the bloodletting at Longyan (Extra) acupoint were adopted. In the control group, Jiáj (夹脊 EX-B 2) at the corresponding affected nerve segments and the local Ashi points were selected and stimulated with electroacupuncture. The visual analogue scale (VAS) was adopted to determine the analgesic effect 20 min, 1, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after treatment separately in each group. Results The onset time of analgesic effect in the observation group was shorter than that in the control group and the efficacy time of duration was longer than that in the control group (all P0.05). The analgesic effect and the result of comprehensive efficacy assessment were superior to those of the control group (both P0.05). Conclusion The comprehensive therapy of blocking, surrounding needling, pricking and cupping method combined with bloodletting at Longyan (Extra) achieves the significant analgesic effect on herpes zoster. 展开更多

Objective To observe the effects of eye acupuncture on expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus of rats after ischemia- reperfusion injury in order to study the mechanisms of eye acupuncture in improving ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods SD rats were randomly divided into a normal group, a sham-operation group, a model group and an eye acupuncture group, with 8 rats in each. The cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury model was established by thread occlusion method. Acupuncture at "liver", "upper-jiao", "lower-jiao", and "kidney" was performed for 20 min in the eye acupuncture group immediateness, 12 h and 23.5 h after the reperfusion. After 24 h of the reperfusion, the neurophysical behaviors were evaluated by Zea Longa neurophysical impairment score; the expression of ischemic hippocampus BDNF mRNA was measured by RT-PCR; the expression of ischemic hippocampus BDNF protein was detected by Western blot technique. Results After reperfusion 24 h, compared with the model group, the neurologic impairment score of the eye acupuncture group decreased significantly (P〈0.01); the expressions of BDNF mRNA and protein in rat hippocampi after the eye acupuncture therapy were both obviously increased (P〈0.01). Conclusion The eye acupuncture therapy is beneficial for neurofunctional rehabilitation by promoting the repair of the nerve cell which is induced by increasing hippocampus BDNF expression. 展开更多

Objective To observe the effects of eye-acupuncture therapy and bodyacupuncture therapy on the expression of brain-deprived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in rats with cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (CIRI). Methods According to random number table, 48 SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups, including normal control group (group A), sham operation group (group B), model group (group C), eye-acupuncture group (group D), non-acupoint of eye-acupuncture group (group E) and body-acupuncture group (group F), eight rats in each group. Artery infarction reperfusion model were prepared by using suture-occluded method. Liver region, upper energizer area, lower energizer area and kidney region were selected in the group D. Acupuncture was carried out at the point located at 3 mm from the acupoint areas in the group E. Qūchí (曲池 LI 11), Zúsānl (足三里 ST 36) and other acupoints were selected in the group F. Zea Longa scoring method was utilized for scoring the neural functions of rats; real-time PCR was carried out to examine the expression level of BDNF mRNA in the brain 72 h after ischemia reperfusion; western blot was carried out to examine the expression level of BDNF protein in the brain 72 h after ischemia reperfusion. Results The symptoms of neurologic impairments in the rats of the group D were alleviated in comparison to those in the group C (P0.01), and the difference between the group D and the group F was not statistically significant (P0.05); Compared with the group C, the mRNA and protein expression levels of BDNF in the brain of rats in the group D and the group F both increased (P0.01), but the difference between the group D and the group F was not statistically significant (P0.05). Conclusion The functions of eye-acupuncture and body-acupuncture in improving cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury are similar, and the functional mechanisms for the two different therapies may be related to the up-regulation of BDNF expression in brain and thus promote the repairing of brain tissues. 展开更多

Objective To observe the clinical curative effect of eye acupuncture therapy on primary dysmenorrhea and the effect on content of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) in peripheral blood of menstrual periods. Methods One hundred and ten cases of primary dysmenorrhea were randomly divided into an eye acupuncture group (60 cases) and a medication group (50 cases). In the eye acupuncture group, lower-jiao area, liver area, kidney area, heart area and spleen area, etc. were selected according to syndrome differentiation, and the eye acupuncture therapy was applied. In the medication group, 300 mg Ibuprofen sustained release capsule was orally administrated 1–2 days before menstrual onset or when the symptoms appeared, once every 12 hours, for 3–5 days totally, 3 menstrual periods constituting one therapeutic course. The content of PGF2α in peripheral blood, and the curative effects and recurrence 3 and 6 months after treatment were observed. Results Three months after treatment, the cured rate was 55.0% (33/60) and the total effective rate was 95.0% (57/60) in the eye acupuncture group, which were superior to those of 34.0% (17/50) and 82.0% (41/50) in the medication group (both P0.05). According to the following-up after 6 menstrual cycles, the recurrence rate of 9.1% (3/33) in the acupuncture group was significantly lower than that of 35.3% (6/11) in medication group. The contents of PGF2α in peripheral blood of menstrual periods were reduced after treatment in the two groups (both P0.01). Conclusion The curative effect of eye acupuncture on primary dysmenorrhea is significant, with the level of PGF2α in peripheral blood of menstrual periods reduced. 展开更多

Objective:To observe the clinical effect of tuina combine with needling distal points for pseudo-myopia in adolescents. Methods:A total of 64 adolescents with pseudo-myopia were allocated into a treatment group and a control group by the random number table, 32 cases in each group (64 eyes). Cases in the treatment group were treated with tuina combined with needling distal points, whereas cases in the control group were treated with the same tuina method (manipulations, treatment area and time) as those in the treatment group. The treatment was done once a day for 10 d as a treatment course. They were treated for 3 courses and there was a 2-day interval between two courses. After 3 treatment courses, all cases were re-examined for the short-term effect on uncorrected eyesight using the logarithmic visual acuity chart and on diopter using retinophotoscopy. Results:After 3 treatment courses, the visual acuity in both groups was improved. The total effective rate was 92.2% in the treatment group, versus 82.8% in the control group, showing a statistical significance (P〈0.05) and indicating a better effect in the treatment group than that in the control group. Conclusion:Tuina combined with needling distal points is remarkably effective for pseudo-myopia in adolescents. Since it doesn’t cause fear (from needling local points around the eyes), it’s easy to be accepted by adolescents and worthy of further clinical application. 展开更多

Cartographic animation has been developed and widely used in geo-visualisation and many other areas in recent years.The usability of animated maps is a key characteristic affecting map users’effectiveness and efficiency in accomplishing tasks.In this paper,an eye tracking approach was proposed as a visual analytics method to evaluate the usability of animated maps by capturing participants’eye movement data and quantitatively analysing the accuracy(effectiveness)and response time(efficiency)of users’task completion.In the study,a set of animated traffic maps represented by three important visual variables(colour hue,size and frequency)was used for the usability evaluation.The experimental results showed that the usability of these three visual variables for cartographic animation affects the usability of animated maps.Red,yellow,and aqua were found to convey map information more effectively than other colour hues.Size was found to be more usable than colour hues for both animated maps and static maps.Usability was not found to be proportional to the playback rate of animated maps.Furthermore,the usability of the frequency,colour hue,and size was found to be related to the display’s size.We hope that the analysis approach presented in this paper and the results of this study will be of help in the design of cartographic animation displays with better usability. 展开更多
