A novel type nano TiN/Ti composite grain refiner (TiN/Ti refiner) was prepared by high energy ball milling, and its effect on as-cast and hot-working microstructure of commercial purity aluminum (pure Al) was investigated. The results show that TiN/Ti refiner exhibits excellent grain refining performances on pure Al. With an addition of 0.2% TiN/Ti refiner, the average grain size of pure Al decreases to 82 μm, which is smaller than that of pure Ti and Al 5Ti 1B master alloy as refiners. The microstructure of weld joint of pure Al with 0.1% TiN/Ti refiner is fine equiaxed grains and the hardness of weld joint is higher than that of the base metal. For pure Al with 40% cold deformation and recrystallization at 250 °C for 1.0 h, the grains of the sample added 0.1% Ti powder have an obvious grain growth behavior. In contrast, oriented grains caused by deformation have been eliminated, and there is no obvious grain growth in pure Al refined with 0.1% TiN/Ti refiner, indicating that nano TiN in the refiner inhibits the growth of grain during recrystallization. 展开更多

Striving for cleaner production is a sought-after manufacturing philosophy.Friction stir welding(FSW)is a joiningtechnique with par excellence and far less invasive to the environment than even best conventional welding processes. It is energyefficient and free from consumables, affluent and radiations. It is,thus, accepted as a clean welding process that can produceacceptable quality joints. It suffers from some major challenges of defects of its own kind that subject the process open toimprovements so as to prove itself a reliable production process. This study presents a holistic characterization of defects commonlyfound in FSW joints. The finding of the present study reveals that most defects are caused by inadequate heat generation, impropermaterial movement around the pin and inadequate material consolidation behind the pin.The amount of heat generation andmaterial stirring depends on several FSW parameters which may lead to the defect formation,if not selected properly. The resultsreported in this work are derived from sound literature support and experimentation.Prescriptions are made in the form ofcharacteristics of defects such as likelihood of their location, main responsible parameters along with the recommendations forminimizing them. 展开更多

The influence of friction stir welding processing parameters on dissimilar joints conducted between aluminium alloy (AA5754) and commercially pure copper (C11000) was studied. The welds were produced by varying the rotational speed from 600 to 1200 r/min and the feed rate from 50 to 300 mm/min. The resulting microstructure and the corrosion properties of the welds produced were studied. It was found that the joint interfacial regions of the welds were characterized by interlayers of aluminium and copper. The corrosion tests revealed that the corrosion resistance of the welds was improved as the rotational speed was increased. The corrosion rates of the welds compared to the base metals were improved compared with Cu and decreased slightly compared with the aluminium alloy. The lowest corrosion rate was obtained at welds produced at rotational speed of 950 r/min and feed rate of 300 mm/min which corresponds to a weld produced at a low heat input. 展开更多

A356 is a high strength aluminium-silicon cast alloy used in food, chemical, marine, electrical and automotive industries.Fusion welding of this cast alloy will lead to many problems such as porosity,micro-fissuring,and hot cracking. However, friction stir welding(FSW) can be used to weld this cast alloy without above mentioned defects. An attempt was made to study the effect of FSW process parameters on the tensile strength of cast A356 aluminium alloy.Joints were made using different combinations of tool rotation speed, welding speed and axial force. The quality of weld zone was analyzed by macrostructure and microstructure analyses.Tensile strengths of the joints were evaluated and correlated with the weld zone hardness and microstructure. The joint fabricated using a rotational speed of 1000 r/min,a welding speed of 75 mm/min and an axial force of 5 kN showed a higher tensile strength compared to the other joints. 展开更多

The dissimilar joining of CP-copper to 304 stainless steel was performed by gas tungsten arc welding process using different filler materials. The results indicated the formation of defect free joint by using copper filler material. But, the presence of some defects like solidification crack and lack of fusion caused decreasing tensile strength of other joints. In the optimum conditions, the tensile strength of the joint was 96% of the weaker material. Also, this joint was bent till to 180° without any macroscopic defects like separation, tearing or fracture. It was concluded that copper is a new and good candidate for gas tungsten arc welding of copper to 304 stainless steel. 展开更多

Joints were fabricated using different combination of process parameters such as rotational speed and welding speed. Based on macrostructural analysis, the friction stir welding window was constructed. The strength values of joints at different regions of friction stir welding window were analyzed using tensile properties, microstructural studies, and the fracture location of joints was correlated with the lowest hardness distribution profiles. In many circumstances, dissimilar metals have to be bonded together and the resulting joint interfaces must typically sustain mechanical and/or electrical forces without failure, which is not possible by fusion welding processes. The melting points of magnesium(Mg)and copper(Cu)have a significant difference(nearly 400℃)and this may lead to a large difference in the microstructure and joint performance of Mg-Cu joints. However, diffusion bonding can be used to join these alloys without much difficulty. This work analyses the effect of parameters on diffusion layer thickness, hardness and strength of magnesium-copper dissimilar joints. The experiments were conducted using three-factor,five-level,central composite rotatable design matrix.Empirical relationships were developed to predict diffusion layer thickness, hardness and strength using response surface methodology. It is found that bonding temperature has predominant effect on bond characteristics.Joints fabricated at a bonding temperature of 450℃, bonding pressure of 12 MPa and bonding time of 30 min exhibited maximum shear strength and bonding strength of 66 and 81 MPa, respectively. 展开更多

Because of the relativity among the parameters, partial least square regression(PLSR)was applied to build the model and get the regression equation. The improved algorithm simplified the calculating process greatly because of the reduction of calculation. The orthogonal design was adopted in this experiment. Every sample had strong representation, which could reduce the experimental time and obtain the overall test data. Combined with the formation problem of gas metal arc weld with big current, the auxiliary analysis technique of PLSR was discussed and the regression equation of form factors (i.e. surface width, weld penetration and weld reinforcement) to process parameters(i.e. wire feed rate, wire extension, welding speed, gas flow, welding voltage and welding current)was given. The correlativity structure among variables was analyzed and there was certain correlation between independent variables matrix X and dependent variables matrix Y. The regression analysis shows that the welding speed mainly influences the weld formation while the variation of gas flow in certain range has little influence on formation of weld. The fitting plot of regression accuracy is given. The fitting quality of regression equation is basically satisfactory. 展开更多

In this paper, the spot welding technology of a new kind of 22MnMoB hot stamping quenched steel sheet was systematically studied by power frequency spot welder. Through a series of technology and test experiments, we have obtained the optimal spot welding technological parameter condition. According to the results, the relations among spot welding technological parameter, welding nugget, mechanical property and fracture mode were discussed. The effects of all the welding parameters such as welding current, welding time and electrode force on the quality of joint can be boiled down to one thing--the diameter of welding nugget. The experimental results showed that welding nugget diameter determines the mechanical property of spot welding joint and the relation between welding nugget diameter and the mechanical property of joint presents a kind of linear mathematic representation. There are two typical fracture models of 22MnMoB hot stamping quenched steel sheet, i.e., interracial fracture and nugget pullout. Other than mild steel or normal high strength steel, in the shearing tensile test, hot stamping quenched steel has a great tendency to fail in interfacial mode due to the effects of high strength matrix structure, welding soft zone and the porosity level of fusion zone. 展开更多

Aluminium alloys generally present low weldability by traditional fusion welding process. Development of the friction stir welding (FSW) has provided an alternative improved way of producing aluminium joints in a faster and reliable manner. The quality of a weld joint is stalwartly influenced by process parameter used during welding. An approach to develop a mathematical model was studied for predicting and optimizing the process parameters of dissimilar aluminum alloy (AA6351 T6-AA5083 Hlll)joints by incorporating the FSW process parameters such as tool pin profile, tool rotational speed welding speed and axial force. The effects of the FSW process parameters on the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of friction welded dissimilar joints were discussed. Optimization was carried out to maximize the UTS using response surface methodology (RSM) and the identified optimum FSW welding parameters were reported. 展开更多
