(S. chamaejasme for short) is one of the most noxious unpalatable weeds in China, which has been frequently reported its negative interaction (i.e. competition and allelopathy) with other herbaceous species in grasslands. This study compared species diversity, biomass and sexual reproduction of herbaceous plants in meadows with S. chamaejasme and in open meadows without S. ehamaejasme in overgrazing meadows on the Tibetan Plateau in China to determine whether positive facilitation exist between S. chamaejasme and other herbaceous species under livestock's overgrazing. The results showed that there are more herbaceous species in meadows with S. chamaejasme than those in open meadows (35s and30s, respectively). Diversity index and above-ground biomass were also significantly higher in meadows with S. charnaejasme. There were 39% (11/28) of all species with sexual reproduction found in meadows with S. charnaejasme, which was 7 times more than those in open meadows. Our study showed that S. charnaejasme could provide biotic refuge for neighboring plants and preserve plant diversity from livestock's overgrazing in alpine meadows on the Tibetan Plateau. It also suggested that inter-specific facilitation between S. charnaejasme and other herbaceous species may play a key role in overgrazing alpine meadows.展开更多

A correlation between interferon based treatment and autoimmune diseases or the development of autoantibodies is well established in non-transplanted patients, but few data are available about transplanted patients. It is unclear whether interferon may increase the incidence of acute cellular rejection and there are few reports on the development of atypical autoimmune manifestations during post-liver transplantation interferon or pegylated interferon treatment. We describe a case of systemic lupus erythematosus following treatment with pegylated interferon alfa-2b in a transplanted patient with recurrence of chronic hepatitis C. Our experience suggest that pegylated interferon may induce autoimmune diseases in the immunosuppressed host, different from acute cellular rejection and call for a great attention to possible autoimmune disorders development during interferon based treatments in liver transplanted patients.展开更多

Methods: The expressions of Akt and PTEN of B16 cells treated with different concentrations of chamaejasme extract were detected with immunohistochemical method, cell apoptosis index(AI) was calculated with in situ labeling method. Results: Akt expressions of B16 cells treated with different concentrations of chamaejasme extract were significantly lower than the control group, while the PTEN expressions significantly up-regulated, and the effects appeared to be dose-related(P < 0.05). The Akt/AI of B16 cells treated with different concentrations of chamaejasme extract was significantly lower than the control group, all the parameters had extremely difference(F = 24.58, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Chamaejasme extract can inhibit proliferation and induce apoptosis of malignant melanoma B16 cells by down-regulating the expression of Akt and up-regulating the expression of PTEN.展开更多

This was a distinctly unusual site of infection which clinically mimicked Crohn's ileitis. We note that reports of terminal ileal CMV infection have been infrequent. Despite a complicated hospital course, ganciclovir therapy was effective in resolving his symptoms and normalizing his ileal mucosa. This report highlights the importance of accurate histological diagnosis and clinical follow-up of lupus patients with GI symptoms undergoing intense immunosuppression.展开更多

Methods Twenty-one SLE children undergoing immunosuppressive therapy were enrolled in this study. Immunofluorescence assay, PCR and serology tests were used to determine HCMV pp65 and p72 antigens in leukocytes, HCMV DNA in sera, and HCMV specific IgM and IgG antibodies, respectively. As a control group, twenty-one immunocompetent children with skeletal malformation were involved in this study. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test (Systat, USA), P values less than 0.05 were considered significant. Results Active HCMV infection was diagnosed in 28.6% (6/21) of SLE patients, with none in the control group; the difference between the two groups was significant (P=0.027). Two out of 6 SLE patients developed active HCMV infection before immunosuppressive therapy and the remaining 4 patients developed SLE after immunosuppressive therapy. Among the 21 SLE children, HCMV pp65 antigenemia was detected in 5 patients, p72 antigenemia in 3 patients, serum HCMV DNA in 9 patients, serum HCMV-specific IgM in 2 patients, and IgG in 19 patients. The sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis of active HCMV infection were 83.3% and 100%, respectively for pp65 antigenemia; 50% and 100% for p72 antigenemia; 100% and 80% for serum PCR; 33.3% and 100% for HCMV IgM serology; 50% and 100% for HCMV IgG serology. Conclusions Compared with the control group, active HCMV infection is much more frequent in SLE children, and can occur before treatment with immunosuppressive agents, but most often occur after immunosuppressive therapy. In comparison with the other techniques used in this study, the pp65 antigenemia assay seems to be a better method for the early diagnosis and monitoring of active HCMV infection in children with SLE.展开更多
