In this paper, the reliability test method of the over-load protective relay is studied, and the reliability tests of the typical products are carried out on a reliability tester developed by authors. A novel integrated protection scheme based on overcurrent protection technique for distribution system is described, in which a specially designed protection relay is installed at each substation of a network and responsible for the protection of every line sections connected to the substation busbar The conventional directional overcurrent and the new adaptive accelerated protection algorithms with multiple settings are implemented into the relay to cover all the protected line sections. The paper includes studies of a typical multi section distribution network to demonstrate the principle of the scheme. Studies show that the new scheme not only offer the new protection features for individual power line section, but also provide the characteristics of integrated protection. 展开更多

Referring to the theoretical analyses and operating experiences of extra high voltage (EHV) transmission lines in China and UHV transmission lines in Russia and Japan, the methods to suppress the internal overvoltage in UHV transmission lines by protection and control strategies are discussed. Through the cooperation among the recloser, shunt reactor, tripping and closing resistance, and metal oxide varistor(MOV), the overvoltage can be restrained within an acceptable level. 展开更多

Cascaded events can be attributed to improper operations of protective relays. The most challenging problem for the design and implementation of a defense system is the performance in accuracy and speed in a real time environment. Protective devices are normally designed to operate fast in order to isolate the fault(s). This paper proposes a new methodology to distinguish line overloads from actual faults for distance relays. In order to distinguish between line flow transfers from a line outage and an actual fault, the line outage distribution factor (LQDF) and generation shift factor (GSF) based power flow estimation method, and a secure peer to peer (P2P) communication structure are adopted. Computer simulations of cascaded events for a 6-bus system and the Korean power grid have been performed to establish the feasibility of the proposed scheme. 展开更多

As the smart grid concepts are emphasized lately, the need to modernize the power engineering education is also well recognized. This paper presents a set of newly developed modeling, simulation and testing tools aimed at better understanding of the design concept and related applications for protective relaying and substation automation solutions for the smart grid. Since the smart grid applications require integration of data from multiple IEDs (intelligent electronic devices), understanding properties of each IED type in detail, as well as their responses to the power system events is needed. In addition, understanding the communication requirements to perform data integration is also important. To illustrate how the mentioned smart grid issues may be taught, the following advanced teaching approaches are presented: (1) Use of modeling and simulation means to better understand interaction between the relays and power system; (2) Use of IED test facilities to better understand performance of physical devices used for protection, monitoring and control; (3) Utilization of communication network modeling tools to simulate the communication network within SAS (substation automation system). Examples showing the use of proposed techniques for teaching the fundamentals and applications are presented. The examples demonstrate the adequacy and efficiency of the proposed techniques. 展开更多

The present paper describes modelling methodology on the basis of Siemens SIPROTEC 4 7SD522/610. In this paper, the relationship between the protection and control of asynchronous motor and all sorts of protection devices for asynchronous motor are briefly expounded. The protection of motor has mainly developed in three stages: thermal relay, electronic integrated protector, and microcomputer protector. In terms of sampling methods, the protection can be divided into two types: (1) the sampling current detection, which is implemented using a thermal relay with circuit breaker for the thermomagnetic tripping motor protection, and an electronic and solid state relay with circuit breaker and sof~ starter for the thermomagnetic tripping motor protection; (2) the sampling temperature detection, which is to directly detect electromotor winding temperature using bimetallic strip temperature relay, thermal protector, detecting coil, and heat resistance temperature relay. However, the second method is very expensive and difficult to maintain because a motor winding is necessary to directly bury, so it is used only in the cases requiring some frequent operations. Finally, the harmonious cooperation between overload protection device and motor or between overload protection device and short circuit protection device must be considered regardless of the protection device model. 展开更多

The protection of distribution networks is facing new challenges from an increasing amount of DG (distributed generation). Even though current technology provides satisfactory solutions to manage this new situation, LOM (loss-of-mains protection) is still considered problematic. The solution proposed in this paper focuses on the use of a line differential protection relay. It inherently contains a suitable communication channel and provides absolutely selective protection for the feeder. Furthermore, it prevents the feeder relays from false tripping for faults on the neighboring feeder. The present trend in protection communication points towards the use of fiber optics. For line differential protection, this means a fast and high-capacity communication link which enables the implementation of many advanced protection functions. In addition, a solid foundation for such a communication link is offered by the new IEC 61850 standard and Ethernet technologies. The basic functionality of the line differential protection enables the operation of both the feeder protection and the DG protection for any fault on the feeder. Furthermore, basic LOM protection methods can be applied as backup protection for failures on the communication link. 展开更多

This paper analyzes a DFIG (doubly fed induction generator) WT (wind turbine) fault current after a symmetrical network voltage dip. The goal is to identify the factors determining how fast the first zero crossings of the fault current occur. This is an important subject because the ftmdamental property of the CB (circuit breaker) is that it breaks the current when the current is very near zero. The study was conducted using a hardware-in-the-loop test environment constructed using two real time simulators (dSPACE and RTDS) and a commercial protection relay. It is found that the reactive current injection during a voltage dip demanded by the grid codes enhances the operation of the WT protection because the zero crossings of the currents through CB are attained earlier. In addition, the size of the crowbar resistance has a significant influence on the zero crossings. 展开更多
