[Method] Test materials were 35 eggplant... [Objective] Aimed to lay a scientific foundation for eggplant resistant breeding, the resistant field identification of eggplant resources to Verticillium wilt was carried out. [Method] Test materials were 35 eggplant resources, which were collected from various places in Sichuan province since 2001. These eggplant resources were made resistance evaluation to Verticillium wilt by watering injured roots with Verticillium dahliae spore suspension. [Result] The eggplant resources had good resistance to Verticillium wilt. Among 35 evaluated resources, 10 resources like 242-9OP, 41-1,35-R5, etc. were resistant, while 23 resources like 68 ×47, Zizaoqie, 32-1, etc. were tolerant. Some resistant resources like 41-1,35-R5, 47-R1, etc. had been transferred into new resistant varieties like EF9910, etc. by breeding institutes. [Conclusion] The resistant level and future resistance breeding direction of eggplant resources in Sichuan were clarified by the resistance evaluation of eggplant resources so as to provide a technical guidance for eggplant resistance breeding. 展开更多

Luba 2.[Method] The seeds of Luba 2 were separately soaked in 20%,40%,60% and 80% hydrogen peroxide solution for 2,5 and 10 min before seed germination.The germination rate and days to reach the maximum germination rate were calculated.[Result] Treatment with low concentrations (20%) of hydrogen peroxide for 2 and 5 min made eggplant Luba 2 germinate in advance,and shortened the time to reach the maximum germination rate.Treatment with high concentrations (60% and 80%) of hydrogen peroxide solution for longer time (10 min) caused significant damage to the seeds,delayed seed germination,and reduced the germination rate.[Conclusion] This study will provide theoretical references for the production practices of eggplant. 展开更多

[ Objective] The aim was to provide evidence and countermeasures for study on allelopathy of eggplant and supply a scientific basis for ecological management of allelopathy and establishment of a reasonable, effective intercropping and continuous cropping system. [ Method] Allelopathy of aerial part extracts from grafted eggplants was studied by bioassay. [ Result] The results showed that aerial part extracts of eggplants have autotoxiclty which inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of eggplants. Aerial part extracts of grafted eggplants inhibited seed germination and seedling growth of tomato, pepper and cu cumber at different level. Inhibition intensity of extracts was in order of tomato 〉 pepper 〉 cucumber. The inhibition effect was higher at 0.2 g/ml concentration than 0.1 g/ml concentration. There wasn't significance between ownrooted treatments and grafted treatments. [ Conclusion] Eggplant is not suitable for round of inter-cropping with tomato, pepper and cucumber. 展开更多

[Objective] The aim of this article is to establish a cell suspension culture system for eggplant. [Method] Using orthogonal design, appropriate media were screened for callus induction, subculture and cell suspension culture. [Result] The appropriate medium for callus induction was MS supplemented with 0.2 mg/L 6-BA and 0.2 mg/L NAA; the appropriate subculture medium was MS supplemented with0.2 mg/L 6-BA, 0.2 mg/L NAA, and 0.1 mg/L KT; the suitable medium for cell suspension culture was liquid MS medium supplemented with 0.4 mg/L NAA and 0.2mg/L. Cell growth curve was similar to "S" shape in the above suspension medium.The cell growth included four phases, the initial phase(1-3 d), the logarithmic phase(3-7 d), the steady phase(7-8 d), and the decline phase(8-11 d). With the increasing culture time, the number of suspension cells increased, and it reached the maximum value at the 7thd, about 3.8 ×105cells/ml. Then the number of cells began to decline rapidly. The cell vigor was the highest at the initial phase. Suspension cells grew best in the liquid MS medium supplemented with NAA(0.4 mg/L)and 6-BA(0.2 mg/L). The mitotic index reached the maximum, about 4.1% in the above medium, which suggested that this medium was suitable for cell suspension culture of eggplant. [Conclusion] Cell suspension culture system of eggplant provides a significant method for eggplant biotechnology. Genetic transformation and mutants screening can be carried out with this system. 展开更多

[Objective] This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on the biological characteristics of tomatoes.[Method] The growth traits such as plant height,stem diameter,leaf shape index of tomato plants grown under different environmental conditions(temperature,light and soil moisture content)were measured and compared.[Result] The effect of light on tomatoes was higher than that of soil moisture in high-temperature environment(30 ℃ or higher);while the speed of tomato plant growth and fruit development were improved by low light.The synthesis of chlorophyll was influenced by soil moisture and light,and greater impact of soil water content on the synthesis of chlorophyll was observed.Among the three treatments,the chlorophyll content of all the three tomato cultivars was in a descending order as follows:control〉 shading treatment〉 drought treatment.[Conclusion] This study will provide references for the control of temperature,light and soil water in tomato cultivation. 展开更多

[Method] Serial dilution concentrations of liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer were prepared for seed soaking and pot incubation of cucumber, tomato and chili, to ob- serve the effects of liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer on seed germination and seedling growth of vegetables. [Result] Compared with the control, germination rate of cucumber and tomato seeds applied with 600-fold liquid seaweed bio-organic fer- tilizer varied significantly; germination rate of chili seeds applied with 400-fold liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer varied significantly; germination energy and germination index of chili seeds applied with different dilution concentrations of liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer presented no significant differences. In addition, 200-fold and 400-fold liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer significantly improved the root length, plant height, plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, chlorophyll content and leaf area of cucumber, tomato and chili seedlings; after treated with 600-fold liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer, root length, chlorophyll content and leaf area of cucumber seedlings varied significantly compared with the control, but no significant differences were observed in plant height, plant fresh weight and plant dry weight; after treated with 600-fold liquid seaweed bio-organic fertilizer, root length, chlorophyll content, plant height, plant fresh weight and plant dry weight of chili and tomato varied sig- nificantly compared with the control, but no significant differences were observed in leaf area. [Conclusion] Soaking vegetable seeds with liquid seaweed bio-organic fer- tilizer can significantly improve seed generation rate and seedling growth. 展开更多

A cDNA Library was constructed with the heat shocked tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) flowers and then was screened with the probes of mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum conservative regions that were cloned by using RT-PCR. The complete cDNAs of mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum small heat shock protein ( shsp) were selected out from the cDNA library. Furthermore, the temperature responses of these shsp genes were determined. Northern hybridization showed that the heat response temperatures of both genes in tomato flower were lower than that in leaf and that mitochondria shsp in leaf was cold-inducible. In this paper, the molecular features of the cloned genes, the causes of the uncommon heat response temperatures of sHSP in newer and the cold inducible character of mitochondria shsp gene in leaf were discussed. 展开更多

Floral organogenesis and development of Przewalskia tangutica Maxim. endemic to China and Hyoscyamus niger L., which belong to the tribe Hyoscyameae (Solanaceae), were studied using scanning electron microscope. They have three common characters of floral organ initiation and development: 1) initiation of the floral organs in the two species follows Hofmeister's rule; 2) the mode of corolla tube development belongs to the 'late sympetaly' type; 3) primordia of the floral appendages initiated in a pentamerous pattern and acropetal order. But initiation of the calyx-lobe primordia showed different modes in these two species. The calyx-lobe primordia of H. niger have simultaneously whorled initiation, while those of P. tangutica have helical initiation, but the five calyx-lobe primordia form a ring after all five calyx-lobe primordia occur. The systematic significance of the present results in the genera Hyoscyamus and Przewalskia is discussed in this paper. 展开更多

Products of plant resistance ( R ) genes Pto and Cf contain distinct domains, and have different cellular localization. It is intriguing to compare the development mechanisms of resistance conferred by the two R genes. In the present report, two hypersensitive response (HR) initiation systems were employed to study the time_course expression induced by Avr / Cf interaction of the genes encoding Pti4, Pti5 and Pti6 which interact directly with Pto: (1) Seeds of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) containing complementary gene pairs Avr 4/ Cf _4 and Avr 9/ Cf _9 were obtained through crossing. Their seedlings developed HR under room temperature. (2) Avr / Cf seedlings grew normally at 33 ℃. When the temperature was shifted down to 25 ℃, HR occurred within hours in the seedlings. Results of both experiments showed that expression of Pti4, Pti5 and Pti6 was induced upon development of hypersensitive necrosis in Avr / Cf seedlings. However, the expression levels and patterns of these Pti s differed. This finding indicated that these Pti s function complementarily, and might be involved in regulation of both Pto and Cf _conferred resistance. 展开更多

[Objective] This study aimed to reveal the expression pattern of foreign genes regulated by tomato rbcS3A promoter in transgenic tomato. [Method] Rubisco small subunit promoter rbcS3A was cloned by PCR, fused to the upstream of Gus coding region in a binary vector, and transformed into tomato plants mediated by Agrobacterium. Histochemical staining on PCR positive plants was performed to ana- lyze the expression pattern of the foreign gene regulated by the tomato rbcS3A pro- moter in transgenic tomato. [Result] A total of 15 positive plants were obtained, ac- counting for 33.3%. Histochemical staining showed that the expression level of Gus fusion gene was highest in mature leaf, lower in reproductive organs such as fruit, and not detected in seed. [Conclusion] More positive seedlings were obtained using the modified tissue culture method. Under the control of tomato rbcS3A promoter, exogenous gene highly expressed in transgenic plant leaves, but did not express in seeds and tomato pulp. 展开更多

The eggplant (Solanummelongena L.) is widely cultivated across the world.Technology regarding the in vitro germination and preservation of eggplant pollen is important for the production of hybrid seeds.In this work,the suitable cultural medium and time for the germination of fresh and dried pollen was investigated.The results showed that a suitable medium for eggplant pollen germination was 0.5% agar+5% sucrose+0.01% boric acid+0.01% GA3,the suitable culture time was 2 h for fresh pollen and 4 h for dried pollen stored at low temperature.GA3 could induce the germination of dried and stored pollen. The better way to dry anthers was 4 h in a desiccator at 25~30℃.We also found that pollen from the second to the fourth branch has the highest germination rate. Furthermore,there were no significant differences in the seed setting rates among the different storage temperatures and storage times,whereas the number of viable seeds formed per fruit differed significantly,which was 87.3% more for pollen stored at -80℃ and fresh pollen than that stored at 4℃.This work optimized pollen storage conditions and is helpful to eggplant hybrid seed production. 展开更多

And a factorial Randomized complete block design (F-RCBD). The experiment consisted of two factors, the first was inoculations with and without humic acid, and the second factor was three levels of dry bread yeast (0.5, 10 gm/L). The results revealed that the growth was significantly increased in term of plant height, branches number%, total chlorophyll and mineral content in leaves (N.P.K) and the yield in term of fruit number/plant, fruit weight (gm), plant yield (gm/plant), total yield (ton/hectare), fruit length and fruit diameter. The interaction between humic acid and bread yeast was highly improved the growth and yield traits. 展开更多

Systematic characterization of available crop varieties using morphological traits is needed to fuel breeders' efforts in African eggplant. Twenty-eight accessions of African eggplant from three species of Solanum aethiopicum (16), Solanum macrocarpon (9) and Solanum anguivi (3) were characterized using standard morphological descriptors. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results indicated distinct and wide variations between the three Solanum species studied. There were however a lot of similarities between the S. aethiopicum and S. anguivi lines. This suggests the two materials being closer to each other than they are to the S. macrocarpon. 展开更多

GM Crops Controversy: Stakeholder Analysis of the Case of Bt Brinjal (Eggplant) in India

Bt cotton a genetically modified (GM) crop has provided higher yields and profits for the farmers in India since its introduction in 2002. The environmentalists across the globe have however expressed the concern on the use of GM crops as they feel that they would cause environmental damage and they are not safe for human consumption. In the meantime, the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (the regulatory body for GM crops in India) evaluated the development process of Bt brinjal (eggplant) and has given its approval for commercial cultivation. This further aggravated the GM controversy; while the farmers are interested in cultivating Bt brinjal, the activists against GM crops have been protesting against the introduction of these hybrids stating that adequate tests have not been done to check on the safety of Bt brinjal. This controversy prompted the Minister of Environment of India Government to hold public consultations across India to access the views of the stakeholders. Based on the public consultations, the minister "put on hold the commercial introduction of Bt brinjal" on February 9, 2010. This paper analyses the view points of stakeholders collected at the public consultation held at Hyderabad on January 31, 2010. The analysis shows that the stakeholders develop different orientation based on the "stage of need hierarchy they are in" and the attributes they use to evaluate the outcome. The paper concludes that the views of the activist groups based on their limited understanding could get the introduction of Bt brinjal stalled as the companies failed in public communication and education. Pasteuria penetrans will build-up faster where there is a high initial nematode density and can suppress root-knot nematode populations in the roots of tomato plants. The effect of different initial densities of nematode (Meloidogyne javanica)(150, 750, 1500, 3000) and P. penetrans infected females (F1, F3) densities (F0=control and AC=absolute control without nematode or P. penetrans inoculum) on the build-up of Pasteuria population was investigated over four crop cycles. Two major points of interest were highlighted. First, that within a confined soil volume, densities of P. penetrans can increase >100 times within 2 or 3 crop cycles. Second, from a relatively small amount of spore inoculum, infection of the host is very high. There were more infected females in the higher P. penetrans doses. The root growth data confirms the greater number of females in the controls particularly at the higher inoculum densities in the third and fourth crops. P. penetrans generally caused the fresh root weights to be higher than those in the control. P. penetrans has shown greater reduction of egg masses per plant at most densities.The effects of different initial densities of M. javanica and P. penetrans on the development of the pest and parasite populations were monitored. And no attempt was made to return the P. penetrans spores to the pots after each crop so the build-up in actual numbers of infected females and spores under natural conditions may be underestimated. 展开更多
