This study was carried out in the Lower Jordan Valley (LJV) under greenhouse field condition, where an area of 0.12 ha was irrigated with 3.5 dS/m magnetic treated water during the growing season 2012/2013. The results of this pilot project show that there are significant increases in the yield of red and yellow bell pepper of about 20% and 18% on fresh weight basis, respectively. Water use efficiency increased by 15% and an increase in shelf time of 7 d were also recorded. The chlorophyll content raised significantly in the leaves of treated plants compared to the controlled one by 2.5 mg/g. Bell pepper irrigated with magnetic water produces 37% more four champers than that of the controlled one. On the other hand, there were no clear significant effects on the height of the plant, number of fruits, distance between nods, size of fruits, number and thickness of walls and sugar contents. Applying visible/near infrared (VIS/N|R) spectroscopy test shows that it is possible to distinguish between treated and controlled bell pepper fruits. Multivariate data analysis (MVDA) method was used to test the classification of chemical elements in the fruit and it was found that treated and controlled fruit samples are divided into two groups according to their water treatment. An increase in all nutrient concentrations was found in fruits irrigated with magnetic treated water compared with the controlled one. Further testing is needed especially by involving other variables such as decreasing the volume of irrigated water and fertilizers.展开更多

The catch rate varied from 0.69 to 6.99kg·h^-1. It was low during monsoon (July to October), which could be due to the freshwater-flow-induced salinity reduction in all the sites. Among 38 species recorded, 5 were shellfish and 33 were finfish. The spawning period of fishes was found to be during summer and early monsoon period (May to August). Surface water temperatures varied from 17℃ to 37 ℃. Salinity values varied from 34 to 44 and the pH ranged between 7 and 8.9. Variation in dissolved oxygen content was from 3.42 to 5.85 mL L^-1. The high fishery densities in these semi arid mangrove creek areas were recorded during monsoon and early winter season.展开更多

Evaluation is carried out based on comparisons of day-3 forecasts of surface wind with in situ and remote-sensing data. The results show that the model predicts the surface wind fields fairly accurately over the west coast of India, with high skill in predicting the surface wind during the pre-monsoon season. The model predicts the diurnal variability of the surface wind with reasonable accuracy. The model simulates the land-sea breeze cycle in the coastal region realistically, which is very clearly observed during the northeast monsoon and pre-monsoon season and is less prominent during the southwest monsoon season.展开更多

This limiting factor can be overcome by increasing and diversifying the population of bee forage plant species throughout man made plantations. In this survey, a combination of literature and field surveys were used in order to identify and compile a list of plant species, which are of importance for fulfilling the honeybee's needs of nectar and pollen. The study was conducted through bi-weekly visit to a numbers of randomly selected sites located in some nature reserves and agricultural fields, within the West Bank Governorates. A total of 143 nectariferous and polleniferous plant species, belonging to 37 families, were identified through direct observation of foraging bees, and/or through literature survey. The dominant families are Compositae with 27 (18.8%) belonging species, followed by Lamiaceae family with 24 (16.7%) belonging species, then followed by Boraginaceae family with 8 (5.5%) belonging species and then followed by other families. The identified plant species was grouped into pollen, nectar and both pollen and nectar sources plant species. The polleniferous plant species group counted 17 which is equivalent to 11.8%; the nectariferous plant species group counted 29 which is equivalent to 20.2%; and the third groups of plant species that have been visited by bees for collecting both pollen and nectar counted 97, which is equivalent to 68%. The chronologies of the blooming plant species were also recorded. It was concluded that any of the studied locations can be profitably utilized for commercial and or large scale beekeeping, if the important limiting factor can be overcome by increasing and diversifying the population of bee forage plant species throughout man made plantations. The paper provides information on the wild and cultivated nectariferous and polleniferous plants that are important for the bees in the West Bank Governorates, Palestine.展开更多

This study attempts to analyze the shoreline and topographic changes around the inlet through analysis of GPS (global position system) measurements and digitized shoreline from aerial photographs. In addition, the DoC (depth of closure) is determined by examining datasets of cross-shore profiles and by calculations using the Hallermeier equation (1981) based on the offshore wave height and period. The results obtained by GPS indicate coastal erosion caused by waves generated by typhoons. The gradual recovery of the shoreline position after the typhoons struck was also captured by the GPS survey. However, analysis of the aerial photographs reveals that the shoreline on the west side of the jetty fluctuated widely. The cross-shore profile datasets reveal that closure depth far from the inlet was deeper than that near the inlet.展开更多

The existence and evolution of this kind of economic disparity is concerned with social stability, sustainable development and the construction of harmonious society, which has gradually become the hotspot in social economic development. The West Coast of the Strait (WCS) located in southeast littoral areas is adjacent to the Pearl and Yangtze River Delta in the south and north and faces Taiwan Province in the east. The stability and development of this region has vital political and economic meaning in the social eco-nomic development of our country. It has important theoretical meaning and practical value to research the form, characteristics and evolution of regional economic disparity in the WCS. Based on insightful analysis on existing study results on the WCS, the paper defines the connotation and extension. By a series of abso-lute and comparative relative evaluation indexes and taking the WCS since 1992 as the study object, the paper makes analysis on different scales including three regions, four regions, 20 cities and 152 counties, quantitatively evaluates the level, characteristics and evolution of the regional economic disparity and compares the regional economic disparity on different scales. The main conclu-sions are as follows: the variation trend of the absolute disparity of the whole region is obvious and stable, which has presented an inflating trend; the comparative variation trend on a large scale has waved, The comparative disparity of the three regions in-creased annually from 1992 to around 2000, which had a decreas-ing trend from around 2000 to 2005; the comparative variation trend on a small scale was not stable, which showed an annual increase of four regions, 20 cities and 152 counties from 1992 to around 2003 and a decrease from around 2003 to 2005; there were some correlations between the regional disparity and scale. In other words, the smaller the scale was, the bigger the disparity was.展开更多

This study provides a better knowledge regarding to the current status of one major component of the bycatches Otolithes argenteus (O. argenteus) caught in the shrimp fishery area along the West coast of Madagascar using the morphometric analysis. Individual body weight and body measurement were carried out on 565 specimens collected from the sale's society of seafood (SOPROMER) in the Capital city. Results show a high proportion of small fishes like as immature young individuals. A "negative allometry" growth type within the juveniles to become "isometric allometry" for the adult, large size was observed. Marine environment is favorable to the development for the whole population of the O. argenteus species. The morphometry approach helped to better understanding of the characteristics and the operating status of the O. argenteus population thus constitute as a tool in establishing a sustainable fisheries management strategy in Madagascar.展开更多

Idukki district, the western Ghats of India was chosen as test area, because of frequent destructive mass wasting processes. Western Ghats is a prominent orographic feature that runs parallel to the south west coast of India. Predicting landslide hazard on a regional scale, namely the assessment of actual and potential mass movement over large area is carried out using Remote Sensing and GIS. A numerical weightage to the causative factors of slope instability such as slope, relative relief, aspect, curvature, drainage density, drainage frequency, land use, road buffer and drainage buffer are assigned as per earlier workers for the purpose of landslide susceptibility zonation. A high degree of match is found between observed and predicted landslide hazard by the procedure employed in the study.展开更多

Factor analysis of the data segregated over high and low tides indicated a total of 6 factors each explaining 91% of variance during high tide and 84% of variance during low tide in Mandovi River. In Zuari River, a total of 6 factors explained 83% of variance during high tide and 4 factors explained 78% of variance during low tide. Factor analyses showed the dominance of nitrite and nitrate in Mandovi and of lead and mercury in Zuari. Higher inputs of anthropogenic ammonia and phenols associated with some phosphate were found in both these rivers. Water quality index (WQI) studies showed increasing overall index of pollution (OIP) values especially in the upstream of Zuari River, suggesting slightly polluted water. Increasing developmental activities along the banks of these rivers introduce domestic and anthropogenic nutrients and trace metals in their estuarine region, which flush out to the sea as per tidal currents, which otherwise can hamper the natural environments of these two rivers.展开更多

The Tsunami Warning Center in Mexico recently created (September 19, 2011) monitors earthquakes and sea level change caused by these same. Sea level on the west coast of the Mexican Pacific was analyzed after the occurrence of local, regional and distant earthquakes, in order to determine the existence of an anomaly due to the quake itself. Variations in sea level due to local registered earthquakes Mw 6.0 to 7.4 range was from 0.10 to 0.30 m; for regional earthquakes of Mw 7.3 and 8.2 were 0.12 and 0.22 m respectively and to the distant earthquake of Mw 8.0 recorded in Solomon Islands, the change in sea level of the maximum recorded was 0.20 m in Manzanillo, Colima. It is important to know that earthquakes whether local, regional or distant whose magnitudes are in the range specified here, did not present a risk to the Mexican coast, but do not rely, having to monitor variations in sea level that earthquakes can produce and be aware that you may perhaps occur as a tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 or Japan in 2011.展开更多

Samples were collected from the Post-Barreiras sediments, a quartzose sandy unit that is extensive along the entire northeast and northern Brazilian coast, where they occur overlying early to middle Miocene Barreiras Formation. A great part of the Post-Barreiras sediments is massive, which precludes its depositional setting interpretation. However, this unit consists of three successions, the lowermost one including highly bioturbated deposits suggestive of marine influence, and the two uppermost ones displaying dune dissipative structures related to eolian processes along coastal areas. The study aimed to compare MAR (multiple aliquot regeneration) and SAR (single aliquot regeneration) protocols for dating these deposits. Discussion involving origins of depositions will also include single aliquot measurements. The ages obtained by OSL (optical stimulated luminescence)-SAR protocol range from (0.5 ± 0.1) ka to (84 ± 6) ka.展开更多

In other words, the smaller the scale was, the bigger the disparity was.
文摘An increasing interest of the economic operators on the bycatch of shrimp fishery endangers bycatch species to over-exploitation risks. The morphometry approach helped to better understanding of the characteristics and the operating status of the O. argenteus population thus constitute as a tool in establishing a sustainable fisheries management strategy in Madagascar.
文摘Length-weight relationships (LWRs) were determined for fish species Diplodus vulgaris from the Benghazi coast along the eastern Mediterranean Sea coast of Libya. Samples were collected using trammel nets. The parameters a and b from the LWR formula W = aLb were estimated. The values of the exponent b of the length-weight relationships in all categories range between 2.295 in September to 3.208 in August. The total number of fish samples investigated were 290, from which 179 were males, 41 females and 70 fishes immature. The sex ratio male to female were 4.3:1. In January, August and Females the slope "b" close to equal 3, were the categories exhibited isometric relationship, in September, October and November were slope "b" not equal 3, which the categories exhibited negative allometric relationship. The mean observed length of male was 18.29 cm at mean observed weight 114.8 g, and mean observed length of female was 19.15 cm at mean observed weight 133.97 g.The general equation for the length-weight relationship for both sex was: W = 0.03835L277, for male was: W = 0.036 L274, for female, W = 0.016 L302.
文摘The aim of the study is to monitor and assess landslide hazards by remote sensing data processing and GIS (Geographic Information Service) spatial analysis. A high degree of match is found between observed and predicted landslide hazard by the procedure employed in the study.
文摘This paper aims to study the architectural design and planning of the Egyptian nuclear research centers. Three Egyptian nuclear research centers and the proposed nuclear research center have been studied. These centers are the Nuclear Research Center in Inshas, the Hot laboratories and Waste Management Center in Inshas, the National Center for Radiation Research and Technology in Nasr City and the proposed Nuclear Research Center in North Western Coast of Egypt. Also, the paper aims to study the functions of these centers, as well as the types of their existing facilities. The paper investigates the principles and standards used in design and planning of these nuclear research centers. A comparative study has been conducted to those four nuclear research centers to evaluate the centers according to the site characteristics and the basic safety factors. The results were compared to determine the best design and planning. The proposed Nuclear Research Center in North Western Coast of Egypt proved to be the best among all with regard to design and planning, taking into consideration the radiation safety requirements. The architects are recommended to design and plan the nuclear research centers, taking into consideration the radial planning concept because it is the best with regard to radiation safety requirements.
文摘Physico-chemical and biological data on water and sediments were collected from Mandovi and Zuari Rivers of Goa along the central west coast of India from 2007 to 2008 to understand the impact of developmental activities on the riverine environments. Increasing developmental activities along the banks of these rivers introduce domestic and anthropogenic nutrients and trace metals in their estuarine region, which flush out to the sea as per tidal currents, which otherwise can hamper the natural environments of these two rivers.
文摘Tsunamis in Mexico are a real threat, still unknown to many, mainly by people living in or visiting the coast. It is important to know that earthquakes whether local, regional or distant whose magnitudes are in the range specified here, did not present a risk to the Mexican coast, but do not rely, having to monitor variations in sea level that earthquakes can produce and be aware that you may perhaps occur as a tsunami in Indonesia in 2004 or Japan in 2011.
文摘The geochemical properties of sediment in the nearby seawater areas of Hailing Bay of the western Guangdong province were first time investigated in the dry period of 2001 and the flood period of 2002, respectively. The temporal and spatial characteristics of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Hg concentrations, organic carbon and total sulfides contents, and granulometric distribution in the surface sediment from the Hailing Bay were analyzed. Results demonstrated that there were no remarkable changes in the composition of sediment between the dry period and the flood period; the average concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and Hg were 32.1 ± 17.5, 36.1 ± 10.0, 107.0 ± 37.4, 0.26± 0.15 and 0.109 ± 0.073 mg·kg-1, respectively; the organic carbon and total sulfides contents were 1.33 ± 0.53 % and 140.13 ± 136.42 mg·kg-1, respectively; surface sediments were dominated by clayey silt and sand, and their mean grain size was 4.62 ± 2.36 φ and in the range 0.52-7.55 φ; there existed obvious correlation between the concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg, and among Cu, Pb, Zn and Hg concentrations, organic carbon contents and grain size of sediments.
文摘It has been classed 856 species of the mollusks which belong to 120 families and five classes living in western coast of the Tonkin Gulf. The class Gastropod was the most abundant, with 449 species, the Bivalve with 368 species, the Scaphopoda with 10 species, the Cephalopods with 19 species and the Amphineura with eight species. Standing stock was estimated about 366,749 tons, that annually caught 80,000 tons. The causes of the resource depletion were human and natural, but the human factors played a key role. The fundamental orientations for developing the resources include: exploiting during harvest seasons, planning suitable aquaculture, moderate exploitation so the resources can restore themselves, combining exploitation and conservation.
文摘In the present work, luminescence dating of sedimentary deposits, from the coast of the State of Maranh^o, in northeast Brazil, was done. The ages obtained by OSL (optical stimulated luminescence)-SAR protocol range from (0.5 ± 0.1) ka to (84 ± 6) ka.
文摘The key aspect in planning and management of water resources is to analyze the runoff potential and erosion status of the river basin. For the detailed investigation of hydrological response freely available Cartosat-1(IRS-P5) data was used for the preparation of digital elevation model(DEM).The runoff potential and type of erosive process of 22 river basins originating in the global biodiversity hotspot of Western Ghats, was inferred through hypsometric analysis.Several parameters like Hypsometric integral(HI),maximum concavity(Eh),coordinates of slope inflection point(I) given by a* and h* and normalized height of hypsometric curve(h) were extracted from the hypsometric curves and used for understanding the hydrological responses. From the hypsometric curves, the landform evolution processes were inferred.Contribution of diffusive and fluvial processes in slope degradation of the river basins was understood.Basins with lesser area(<100 km^2) were found to have a positive correlation between hypsometric integral and basin area, whereas for large basins no such correlation exists.Based on the study, river basins can be prioritized for the appropriate conservation measures.
