Impacts of Park Landscape Structure on Thermal Environment Using QuickBird and Landsat Images

Urban parks composed mostly of vegetation and water bodies can effectively mitigate the urban heat island effect. Many studies have investigated the cooling effects of urban parks; however, little attention has been given to park landscape structure. Based on landscape metrics, this study has explored the influences of the park landscape structure on its inner thermal environment, taking heavily urbanized Beijing Municipality in China as the study area. Three indices, including the percentage of landscape （PLAND）, landscape shape index （LSI） and aggregation index （AI）, were used to measure the composition and configuration characteristics of the landscape components inside the parks. The indices were calculated for five landscape types being interpreted from Quickbird images. Urban thermal conditions were measured using the land surface temperature （LST） derived from Landsat TM images. The results showed that the park LST had a negative relationship with the park size, but no significant relationship was found with park shape. For the park＇s interior landscape, however, the configuration and composition characteristics of the landscape components inside the park explained 70% of the park LST variance. The area percentage of water bodies and the aggregation index of woodland were identified as the key influencing characteristics. In addition, when the composition and configuration characteristics of the park landscape components were separately considered, the configuration characteristics （LSI and A1） explained approximately 54% of the variance in park LST, which was comparable with that explained by the composition characteristics （PLAND）. Thus, this study suggested that an effective and practical way for urban cooling park design is the optimization of spatial configuration of landscape components inside the park.

Workshops of the Paulista Company in Jundiai, Sao Paulo： A Threatened Railway Heritage

The workshops built by the Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro in Jundiai can be considered among the most significant Brazilian railway assets, both for their aesthetic and deployment qualities, and for the industrial activities carried out on the premises, since their spaces preserve the memory of the work of generations of railway personnel who performed their various functions there between 1893--the year they opened, and 1990 when they were permanently decommissioned. This complex, during its almost 100 years of operation, has undergone significant modifications and enhancements mainly due to technological changes driven by the replacement of steam traction by electric traction, and then by diesel-electric traction. Despite this, the complex maintained an impressive architectural consistency. Unfortunately, most of the buildings of this complex are unused and in disrepair, being the target of invasions, vandalism and theft of materials that if not stopped will cause irreparable damage to its structure and to the local ambience. The question that appears most urgent, therefore, is to seek ways to repossess this group of workshops in order to meet the current demands of urban development without losing the characteristics which form its architectural and urban identity in a city in accelerated mutation.

Public Diplomacy and Beijing City Image Research From Major International Sporting Events Perspective

This paper focuses on Beijing as the host city for the major international sporting events and its influence on the city image building of Beijing. Major international sporting events are the key channels for the exchange and dissemination of information among athletes from various countries, media coverages, national and international audiences which involves interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and mass communication at all levels. At the same time, the volunteers, especially young volunteers （mostly college student volunteers） considered as the Beijing city spokesperson and also as a group of ＂public diplomacy ambassadors＂, transfer positive energy in international communication during major international sporting events. Therefore, major international sporting events held in Beijing play an irreplaceable role in the image building of the capital city of China, Beijing.

High-resolution Hyper-spectral Image Classification with Parts-based Feature and Morphology Profile in Urban Area

High-resolution hyper-spectral image (HHR) provides both detailed structural and spectral information for urban study. However, due to the inherent correlation between spectral bands and within-class variability in the data, the data processing of HHR is a challenging work. In this paper, based on spectral mixture analysis theory, a new stack of parts description features were extracted, and then incorporated with a stack of morphology based spatial features. Partially supervised constrained energy minimization (CEM) and unsupervised nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) were used to extract the part-features. The joint features were then integrated by SVM classifier. The advantages of this method are the representation of physical composition of the urban area by the parts-features and the show of multi-scale structure information by morphology profiles. Experiments with an airborne hyper-spectral data flightline over the Washington DC Mall were performed, and the performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated in comparison with well-known nonparametric weighted feature extraction (NWFE) and feature selection method. The results shown that the proposed features-joint scheme consistently outperforms the traditional methods, and so can provide an effective option for processing HHR data in urban area.
