Creative Imitation: An Answer to the Fundamental Issue of L2 Learning 被引量:4

This paper reports on a study on the effects of reading-writing integrated tasks on vocabulary learning and explored the differential roles of creative construction and non-creative construction in promoting lexical learning. Participants were 90 first-year English majors, randomly assigned to two experimental groups(continuation and retelling) and one control group, with 30 students in each group. Results showed that the continuation group generated a substantial amount of creative construction and produced significantly more instances of creative imitation than the retelling group. The continuation group outperformed the retelling group for both receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge gain and retention, but differences were only significant in terms of productive vocabulary retention. Finally, productive vocabulary knowledge retention among the continuation group was significantly and positively correlated with creative imitation(meaning creation coupled with language imitation), but not with linguistic alignment per se. As productive vocabulary knowledge constitutes the learner ’s ability to use lexical knowledge to express ideas in dynamic contexts, the findings afforded evidence that creative imitation could be the answer to the fundamental issue of L2 learning(i.e., mapping static language onto dynamic idea expression). The pedagogical implications as well as future research directions are also discussed. 展开更多

Although the middle construction has attracted significant attention from syntacticians, its identity still remains controversial and it is not treated as a separate grammatical category in any English learner's dict... Although the middle construction has attracted significant attention from syntacticians, its identity still remains controversial and it is not treated as a separate grammatical category in any English learner's dictionary. This article, based on the data collected from three English learner's dictionaries, investigates the middle construction in terms of its syntactic and semantic properties and the constraints on its use. It shows that the three learner's dictionaries treat the middle construction in inconsistent and problematic manners. The middle use of a verb is not distinguished from either transitive verbs with an implicit object or intransitive verbs, which may hinder English learners' acquisition of the construction. The article proposes that middle verbs should be treated as a separate subcategory of verbs on a par with transitive and intransitive verbs so that learners will become more aware of them and learn to use them correctly. 展开更多

Objective:In order to achieve accurate implantation of the acetabular prosthesis in total hip arthroplasty(THA),we designed individual templates based on a three-dimensional(3D) model generated from computed tomography(CT) scans.Methods:Individual templates were designed for 12 patients who underwent THA.A physical template was designed to conform to the contours of the patient's acetabulum and to confirm the rotation of the acetabular center.This guided the acetabular component orientation.Results:The preoperative and postoperative X-ray and CT scans were obtained to assess the location with respect to the accuracy of the acetabular component.For all patients,the abduction angle of the acetabular component was 46.7°to 54.3°and the anteversion angle was 11.3°to 18.5°Conclusions:The assessment of postoperative CT scans demonstrated higher accuracy of the acetabular component bore when used with the individual template.Therefore,the individual template can be an alternative to the computer-assisted navigation systems,with a good cost-performance ratio. 展开更多
