The bonding stress development of bars adhered to grout concrete was analyzed. The local bonding stress—slip curve was obtained. Based on the test results,a new bonding stress— slip constitutive model between bars and grout concrete was proposed. The results show that the maximum bonding stress is not influenced by the bar bond length, but it is strengthened when the splitting strength of grout concrete is increased. The model matches the experimental results well, and the regressing coefficient equals 1.7.展开更多

The first original point to be investigated, tackled in a previous experiment (Kambakis-Vougiouklis, 2012), concerns users' confidence whether their choice of a specific strategy is effective while the second point concerns the use of the bar as an alternative statistical tool. More specifically, in this particular experiment the bar is not divided only into five equal length spaces as in the first experiment but also into five equal area spaces according to Gauss distribution, giving the researcher the chance to investigate possible differences between two ways of data processing--an advantage only the use of the bar could provide in the analysis stage. Additionally, there are advantages concerning results collection, as subjects and researcher will have a completely free choice among infinite points on a line rather than a limited 3, 4, 5, and 6 of a Likert scale, avoiding at the same time fine verbal differences between different subdivisions. Although the two different methods of processing performed homogeneous behaviour with not statistically considerable differences, it needs further applications in order to reach safe conclusions展开更多

With this proposal a discrete situation is replaced by a fuzzy one. There are identified certain advantages concerning the use of the bar as compared to that of a scale during both the stages of filling-in as well as processing a questionnaire. The main advantage associated with business research requirements is the fact that it is expected to be much quicker to fill in and much easier to explain to participants. The bar provides the potential for different types of processing Likert scales cannot. Therefore the researchers are allowed to ascertain that the given answers follow not only the already suggested and used Gauss distribution but also a parabola distribution as it will be suggested in present paper, and which is expected to give the researcher the opportunity to "correct" this tendency. Therefore, a possibility of choosing amongst a number of alternatives is offered, by utilizing fuzzy logic in the same way as it has already been done in industry and combining mathematical models with multivalued operations.展开更多

General hypotheses are formulated, which are the qualitative results of the asymptotic method of integration of the stated initial-boundary value problem. On the basis of the accepted hypotheses general applied one-dimensional models of dynamics of bending deformation of micropolar orthotropic elastic thin bars with free fields of displacements and rotations are constructed with and without consideration of shear deformations. With the help of the constructed models different dynamic problems of micropolar bars can be studied. Here concrete problems of free and forced vibrations of hinged supported micropolar orthotropic elastic thin bar are studied. Numerical analysis is done and specific features of dynamic characteristics of micropolar material are revealed. Particularly, it is shown that there is a frequency of vibrations of the micropolar bar that does not depend on bar sizes.展开更多

In particular, there are plans to use them in constellations of small spacecraft for remote sensing of various regions of the magnetosphere. They require a payload with specific size, weight and power consumption. In order to respond to this demand, new instruments have to be developed. Those instruments should exhibit at least the same performances as those used in larger satellites while fulfilling the specific requirements imposed by the satellites size. For this reason, the authors currently develop a xylophone bar magnetometer (XBM) based on micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) with integrated detector electronics. The principle of this magnetometer is based on a classical resonating xylophone bar. A sinnsoidal current oscillating at the fundamental bending resonant frequency of the bar is applied through the device, and when an external magnetic field is present, the resulting Lorentz force yields the bar to vibrate at its fundamental mode with a displacement directly proportional to the amplitude in one direction of the ambient magnetic field. When designing a MEMS XBM, the detection method is a crucial aspect. The measurement method largely influences the geometry of the magnetometer as well as the manufacturing technology. Due to the constraints in terms of size, weight and power consumption, the two most promising measurement methods are capacitive and piezoelectric ones. Several designs including these measurement techniques are presented and simulated under realistic conditions. First, designs including lateral electrodes for capacitive measurement are tackled based on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) process. For the piezoelectric detection, a new configuration based on Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT)/Pt structure is introduced and leads to much better sensitivity than the traditional Pt/PZT/Pt sandwich structure. Finally, the principle of electronic circuits enabling high sensitivity and low power consumption are proposed.展开更多

Different from the traditional analysis method, FPM is based on the combination of the vector mechanics and numerical calculations. It models the analyzed domain composed of finite particles. Newton's second law is adopted to describe the motions of all particles. A convected material flame and explicit time integration for the solution procedure is also adopted in this method. By using the FPM, there is no need to solve any nonlinear equations, to calculate the stiffness matrix or equilibrium matrix, which is very helpful in the analysis of kinematically indeterminate structures. The basic formulations for the space bar are derived, following its solution procedures for bar assemblies. Three numerical examples are analyzed using the FPM. Results obtained from both the straight pretension cable and the suspension cable assembly show that the FPM can produce a more accurate analysis result. The motion simulation of the four-bar space assembly demonstrates the capability of this method in the analysis ofkinematically indeterminate structures.展开更多

The ultimate bearing capacity of the existing bridge after retrofit was discussed on the basis of concrete structures theory. The flexural strengths of RC beams strengthened with CFRP bars were controlled by the failure of concrete in compression and a prestressing method was applied in the retrofit. The field construction processes of strengthening with CFRP bars-including grouting cracks, cutting groove, grouting epoxy and embedding CFRP bars, surface treating, banding with the U-type CFRP sheets, releasing external prestressed steel tendons-were introduced in detail. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this strengthening method, field tests using vehicles as live load were applied before and after the retrofit. The test results of deflection and concrete strain of the T-shaped beams with and without strengthening show that the capacity of the repaired bridge, including the bending strength and stiffness, is enhanced. The measurements of crack width also indicate that this strengthening method can enhance the durability of bridges. Therefore, the proposed strengthening technology is feasible and effective.展开更多

Different crack aspect ratios, a/b, ranging from 0.0 to 1.2 and relative crack depths, a/D, ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 were considered. Since the loading was non-symmetrical for torsion loadings, a whole finite element model was constructed. Then, the individual and combined bending and torsion loadings were remotely applied to the model. The equivalent SIF method, F*EQ, was then used explicitly to combine the individual SIFs from the bending and torsion loadings. A comparison was then carried out with the combined SIF, F*FE, obtained using the finite element analysis (FEA) under similar loadings. It was found that the equivalent SIF method successfully predicted the combined SIF for Mode I. However, discrepancies between the results determined from the different approaches occurred when Fm was involved. It was also noted that the predicted F* EE using FEA was higher than the F*EQ predicted through the equivalent SIF method due to the difference in crack face interactions.展开更多
