Objective: To explore the possible mechanisms of "JIN San Zhen" (JIN’s 3 acupoints groups) in treatment of mental retardation. Methods: A total of 38 female mice were randomly divided into normal control (n=10), sham operation (n=10), model (n=8) and acupuncture (n=10) groups. "Si Shen Zhen" [4 points around "Baihui" (GV 20): 0.3 cm anterior, posterior, left and right to GV 20 respectively], and "Zhi San Zhen" ["Shenting" (GV 24) and bilateral "Benshen" (GB 13)] of "JIN San Zhen" series are used. The memory ability, AChE positive fiber density and mono amines transmitters of the brain are used as the indexes. Results: After 8 days’ treatment, cerebral ischemia induced mental retardation (decline of learning memory ability) was improved significantly shown by Y maze test (P<0.05-0.01), simultaneously, AChE positive fiber density of the frontal cerebral cortex and hippocampus, serotonie (5 HT), noradrenaline (NA) and dopamine (DA) contents of the brain increased significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupuncture induced increase of AChE, 5 HT, NA and DA in the brain may contribute to the effect of acupuncture in improving the memory capability of the RD mice. 展开更多

In the present paper, the clinical therapeutic effect of acupuncture therapy for treatment of primary prosopalgia was observed and its influencing factors were analyzed in 2656 patients. Yuyao (EX HN 4), Touwei (ST 8), Sibai (ST 2), Quanliao (SI 18), Xiaguan (ST 7) and Jiachengjiang were punctured selectively according to the involvement of different branches of the trigeminal nerve. After treatment, of the 2656 cases, the trigeminal neuralgia disappeared in 1469 (55.31%), 727 (27.37%) had marked improvement, 430 (16.19%) had improvement and 30 (1.13%) had no any significant effect. The three years’ follow up visit in 245 cases showed a relapse in 187 cases (76.3%). We think that the therapeutic effect is closely related to the needling manipulations. Only when an electric shock like needling sensation appeared (i.e. “qi reaching the affected area") after inserting the acupuncture needle into the chief acupoints, a better therapeutic effect would be achieved. 展开更多

In the present paper, 126 patients with neuralgia involving the mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve were treated mainly by puncturing the mental foramen and the mandibular foramen. The two foramina are both located in the focus through which the Stomach Channel of Foot Yangming passes. Among the 126 patients, 42 were attributed to the light type, 61 to the moderate type one and the other 23 to serious type. Acupuncture treatment was given once daily, 30 min every time, with 10 days being a therapeutic course. After 3 courses of treatment, results showed that 29 (69.1%) light type cases, 35(57.4%) moderate type cases and 6 (26.1%) serious type cases were cured. It displays that the less serious the symptom, the higher is the cure rate, and the shorter the duration of disease, the better is the therapeutic effect. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of "Zusanli"(ST 36) and "Weishu"(BL 21)on the experimental gastric ulcer in Xu period of a day for analyzing the best opportunity of acupuncture treatment of gastric ulcer. Methods:49 Wistar rats were randomly divided into ① control group, ② ST 36 Xu group, ③ BL 21 Xu group, ④ ST 36 Chen group, ⑤ BL 21 Chen group, ⑥ ST 36 IT group, and ⑦ BL 21 IT group, with 7 rats in each group. Rat gastric ulcer model was established using intra gastric administration of glacial acetic acid. Gastric mucosal thickness, mucosal muscular defect width, superficial mucosal mucus index (MI),intramucosal MI ,Total MI,plasma 6 keto PGF1α ,serum NO and gastric tissue CGRP concentrations were used as the indexes. The EA treatment was conducted once daily at Xu period (7-9 o’clock in the evening), Chen period (8-10 o’clock in the morning) and irregular time (IT) with 6 days being a therapeutic course, two courses altogether. Results:After EA treatment,①the regenerated mucosal thickness values of the aforementioned 6 EA groups, particularly ST 36 Xu group and BL 21 Xu group, were all apparently higher than that of control group (P<0.05-0.01), while the mucosal muscle layer defect width values of different EA groups, particularly ST 36 Xu group and BL 21 Xu group, were strikingly lower than that of control group (P<0.05-0.01); ②the 3 MI of the 6 EA groups, particularly those of ST 36 Xu group were all significantly higher than those of control group (P<0.05-0.01); ③plasma 6 keto PGF1α contents of the 6 EA groups, particularly those of ST 36 Xu and BL 21 Xu groups, were all significantly higher than that of control group (P<0.05-0.01); ④serum NO and gastric tissue CGRP concentrations of the 6 EA groups, particularly those of ST 36 Xu and BL 21 Xu groups and CGRP concentration of ST 36 Chen group, were all significantly higher than those of control group (P<0.05-0.01);and ⑤there were positive correlation between superficial MI or total MI and NO level (r=0.858, 0.987, P<0.05,and 0.01),and between the superficial mucus index and CGRP concentration (r=0.9051, t=4.68, P<0.01), suggesting that the increase of the secretion function of the regenerated mucosal mucus is related to acupuncture induced increase of release of both NO and CGRP.Conclusion:The therapeutic effect of EA of ST 36 and BL 21 in Xu period is better in the treatment of gastric ulcer, and that of EA of ST 36 is the best. 展开更多

Dr.He's bloodletting therapy utilizing three edged needles is one of his "three adjusting methods of acupuncture". During his 70 years of clinical practice, he developed the theory that most diseases are caused by qi stagnation, and in order to restore qi circulation one needs to improve the blood circulation first. Based on this theory, in combination with empirical insights from clinical practice, he has developed a unique technique for using three-edged needles. He has also categorized and extended the application of bloodletting therapy with three edged needles to cover over 150 diseases. In addition, Dr. He's bloodletting therapy with three edged needles is an innovation that may inspire other physicians to develope and expand the use of acupuncture-related therapies to treat disease. 展开更多

Objective: To explore the clinical effects of electroacupuncture(EA) at Zusanli(ST 36) and Fenglong(ST 40) in treating senile dementia. Methods: A total of 74 patients were randomly divided into an EA group and a medication group based upon the random digital table, 37 cases in each group. EA at Zusanli(ST 36) and Fenglong(ST 40) was given in the EA group, once every day, for six treatments per week. Donepezil Hydrochloride Tablets were given to the medication group, 5 mg per time and once a day in the former four weeks, 10 mg per time and once a day after 4 weeks, oral administration before sleep at night. The courses of the treatment were 12 weeks in both groups. The scores of mini-mental state examination(MMSE) and Barthel index(BI) were observed before and after the treatment, for processing the comparative analysis of the clinical effects after the course of the treatment. Results: The total effective rate was 86.5% in the EA group and 70.3% in the medication group. The therapeutic effect was better in the EA group than that in the medication group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P〈0.05). MMSE and BI scores after the treatment in the two groups were all elevated than those of the same groups before the treatment(P〈0.05, P〈0.01). The improving situation was obviously better in the EA group than that in the medication group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant(P〈0.05). Conclusion: EA at Zusanli(ST 36) and Fenglong(ST 40) is affirmative in the therapeutic effect for senile dementia and can also improve the cognitive function and enhance the patients' quality of life. 展开更多

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy and action mechanism of Jin's three-needle acupuncture plus Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in treating cervical vertigo. Methods: By adopting a randomized controlled method, 80 eligible patients were randomized into an observation group of 41 cases and a control group of 39 cases. The control group was intervened by Jin's cervical three-needle acupuncture plus acupuncture at the vertigo-pain points and Fengchi (GB 20); the observation group was by Long's chiropractic tuina manipulations in addition to the treatment given to the control. For both groups, the intervention was given once a day, 7 sessions as a treatment course, with a 1-day interval after a course, for 2 courses in total. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated after the first session and the second treatment course, at the 3-month and 6-month follow-ups. Results: After the first session, the recovery plus markedly effective rate of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P〈0.01); the rate was markedly higher in the observation group than that in the control group after 2 treatment courses (P〈0.01); at the 3-month follow-up, the relapse rate was 2.5% in the observation group versus 23.5% in the control, and the between-group difference was statistically insignificant (P〉0.05); the 6-month follow-up study showed that the relapse rate was 5.0% in the observation group versus 21.6% in the control group, and the between-group difference was statistically significant (P〈0.05); at the 6-month follow-up, the total relapse rate was 7.5% in the observation group versus 35.1% in the control group, and the inter-group difference was statistically significant (P〈O.01). Conclusion: The two treatment protocols are both effective in treating cervical vertigo. However, due to its more significant efficacy, more efficient action and lower relapse rate compared to acupuncture alone, acupuncture plus tuina can be regarded as a verified protocol for cervical vertigo. 展开更多

The contents about the central action mechanisms of needling Zusanli(ST 36) were sorted by summarizing the relevant literatures published in the past 10 years, and it was found that: by comparing acupuncture at Zusanli(ST 36), other acupoints or sham points, most studies showed that Zusanli(ST 36) had relatively specific characteristics in the brain function response; studies on the central action mechanisms of Zusanli(ST 36) were mainly focused on sequelae of cerebral apoplexy, pain, gastrointestinal diseases, weight loss and drug addiction withdrawal and so on; acupuncture manipulations, stimulation methods, individual differences, stimulation quantity, and stimulation duration, etc. could also induce different brain function responses; acupuncture at Zusanli(ST 36) had an after-working effect, also called long-term effect, but with poor repeatability. So, it was suggested that the future studies should focus on the factors that affect the clinical efficacies and experimental results, including the compatibility effects of the acupoints, reproducibility of research results, sample size, acupuncture methods, long-term effects and disease entities. 展开更多

Objective: To explore and analyze the points-selection rules in acupuncture treatment of mammary gland hyperplasia (MGH) by data mining and statistical method. Methods: Clinical literatures about the treatment of MGH with acupuncture published in the recent 16 years were retrieved from Chinese Journal Full-text Database (CJFD) and established into a database by Excel. The SPSS 20 version software and Clementine 12.0 version software were adopted to analyze the frequency and association rules of points-selection in the treatment of MGH with acupuncture. Results: The top 3 points used most frequently in acupuncture treatment of MGH were Danzhon8 (CV 17), Taichong (LR 3) and Zusanli (ST 36); points from the Stomach Meridian of Foot Yangming and Liver Meridian of Foot Jueyin were most commonly used; the commonly selected points were predominantly distributed in thoracic and abdominal regions and lower limbs; emphasis on the combination use of local and distal points; of the specific points, the five Shu-Transmitting points were mostly used; association analysis showed that the associations among Taichong (LR 3), Danzhong (CV 27) and Zusanli (ST 36) were the most significant. Conclusion: The data mining results substantially accord with the general rules of acupuncture-moxibustion theories in traditional Chinese medicine, able to reflect the points-selection principles and features in acupuncture treatment of MGH and provide evidence for the points selection in the treatment of MGH in acupuncture clinic. 展开更多
