The cost and safety of geotechnical engineering are highly depending on the accuracy of soil shear strength parameters.There are three methods often used to estimate soil shear strength parameters,i.e.,moment method,3-sigma rule and linear regression method.In this study,the accuracy of these three methods is compared.Traditional linear regression method(LRM)can only offer the mean of shear strength parameters.Some engineers misuse the standard error of shear strength indexes as the standard deviations.Such misuse may highly underestimate the uncertainty and induce high risk to the geotechnical design.A modified LRM is proposed to determine both the mean and variance of shear strength parameters.The moment method,three-sigma rule and LRM are used to analyze the tri-axial test data in Xiaolangdi Hydraulic Project and three numerical shear strength tests.The results demonstrate that:1)The modified LRM can offer the most accurate estimation to shear strength parameters;2)A dimensionless formula is much preferred in LRM rather than a dimensional formula.The stress ratio formula is much better than stress relation in the shear strength parameter analysis.The proposed method is applicable to shear strength parameter analysis for tri-axial test data,direct shear test and the un-drained shear strength test of stratified clay. 展开更多

Strain rate effects on the stress-strain behavior of sand were investigated by performing special plane strain and triaxial compression tests on saturated and air-dried sand specimens. In these tests, the loading strain rate was changed many times by a factor of up to 1 000 during otherwise monotonous loading at a constant axial strain rate. Test results show that the stress jump upon a stepwise change in the strain rate decays with an increase in the irreversible strain when monotonous loading continues at the changed strain rate and the amount of stress jump is essentially proportional to the instantaneous stress. Based on the amount of these stress jumps, a parameter fl called the rate-sensitivity coefficient is introduced to represent the quantity of the observed viscous properties of sand, which equals 0.021 3 and 0.024 2 respectively for Hostun and Toyoura sands. Further analyses on the results indicate that the effect of the presence of pore water is deemed to be negligible with sand and the fl value is rather independent of loading method, wet condition and confining pressure. 展开更多

The dynamic errors of gyros are the important error sources of a strapdown inertial navigation system. In order to identify the dynamic error model coefficients accurately, the static error model coefficients which lay a foundation for compensating while identifying the dynamic error model are identified in the gravity acceleration fields by using angular position function of the three-axis turntable. The angular acceleration and angular velocity are excited on the input, output and spin axis of the gyros when the outer axis and the middle axis of a three-axis turntable are in the uniform angular velocity state simultaneously, while the inner axis of the turntable is in different static angular positions. 8 groups of data are sampled when the inner axis is in 8 different angular positions. These data are the function of the middle axis positions and the inner axis positions. For these data, harmonic analysis method is applied two times versus the middle axis positions and inner axis positions respectively so that the dynamic error model coefficients are finally identified through the least square method. In the meantime the optimal angular velocity of the outer axis and the middle axis are selected by computing the determination value of the information matrix. 展开更多

A data processing method was proposed for eliminating the end restraint in triaxial tests of soil. A digital image processing method was used to calculate the local deformations and local stresses for any region on the surface of triaxial soil specimens. The principle and implementation of this digital image processing method were introduced as well as the calculation method for local mechanical properties of soil specimens. Comparisons were made between the test results calculated by the data from both the entire specimen and local regions, and it was found that the deformations were more uniform in the middle region compared with the entire specimen. In order to quantify the nonuniform characteristic of deformation, the non-uniformity coefficients of strain were defined and calculated. Traditional and end-lubricated triaxial tests were conducted under the same condition to investigate the effects of using local region data for deformation calculation on eliminating the end restraint of specimens. After the statistical analysis of all test results, it was concluded that for the tested soil specimen with the size of 39.1 mm × 80 ram, the utilization of the middle 35 mm region of traditional specimens in data processing had a better effect on eliminating end restraint compared with end lubrication. Furthermore, the local data analysis in this paper was validated through the comparisons with the test results from other researchers. 展开更多

The treatment of clamped boundary conditions was the same as that adopted by Timoshenko and Goodier (1970). The pinion bracket-assembly(PBA) is a major part of three gorges project(TGP) ship lift drive system. The static strength,fatigue strength and stress distribution of hinge pin of PBA were analyzed by ANSYS, and the structure of PBA was optimized. The results show that after the optimization, the maximum comprehensive stress is 259.59 MPa, the maximum fatigue cumulative damage of weld joints is 0.94 and the maximum vertical deformation of hinge pin is 0.14 mm. The elastic deformation, hydropneumatic spring cylinder(HSC) load response and the vibration characteristics of PBA were studied by the bearing test when PBA bore the load caused by different water level errors. The results indicate that when the water level of ship chamber ranges from 3.4 m to 3.6 m,the vertical elastic deformation of the pinion shaft is between-8.58 and 10.50 mm. When upward outage-load(1580 k N) is imposed by the test-rack, the vertical elastic deformation of the pinion shaft is 13.42 and 14.07 mm and HSC load response is 795.80-800.80 k N. In the process of imposing load on the pinion by the test-rack, the maximum vibration amplitude and acceleration of PBA internal components are 0.37° and 2.67 rad/s2, respectively; the maximum impact on the pin caused by vibration is 19.89 k N; the pinion shaft vertical displacement and HSC load response do not fluctuate. There is a great difference between the frequency of meshing force of the pinion and the rack(1.06 Hz) and first-order natural frequency of PBA(8.41 Hz), thus PBA will not resonate.From all above, PBA meets the static strength and fatigue strength requirements. The vibration of PBA internal components has no effect on the vertical displacement of the pinion shaft, HSC load response and smooth operation of PBA. There is a liner relationship in the ratio of 2:1 between the thrust imposed by the test-rack and HSC load, thus HSC can limit the load imposed on the pinion. 展开更多
