This paper presents an original interpretation of the Upanishads that the inner self is located in the embryo brain region of the brain. This is the part of the brain already present in the embryo and consists of the brainstem, hypothalamus, thalamus, and midbrain. It is also the part of the brain that operates during dreaming and deep sleep and causes the transition from sleeping to waking states, and the Upanishads state unequivocally that the self is responsible for these mental states. With the self located in the embryo brain region, an entirely new interpretation of Aristotle's De Anima is presented which parallels the Upanishads in every respect; the inner self and Aristotle's "soul" have identical functions and attributes. An Aristotelian First Principle is presented: Biology is the source of Consciousness; DNA is the source of Biology; Ergo DNA is the source of Consciousness. 展开更多

In evaluating Plutarch's contacts with other cultures of his era, scholars have not reached consensus so far regarding the relationship between the Chaironean and Early Christian writers. A good example of this lacks of consensus rises when we come to the views of the creation of human soul. As a matter of fact, following the first approaches on this issue by Brenk in his "The Origin and the Return of the Soul in Plutarch", it is possible to understand that "Plutarch desecularizes and repersonalizes the master (i.e., Plato) (...) suggesting that the soul enters our miserable world without having had a previous vision of the forms to assure its reborn". Even if the researcher plausibly demonstrates this assert, we must accept from his conclusions that we should also move some steps forward by placing Plutarch's conceptions regarding the origin of human soul in his proper historical, philosophical, and religious context. Therefore, the aim of the following paper is to deal with those contacts in order to highlight their similitudes and/or differences about the motif of the soul's birth. 展开更多

The results revealed that the context-clue group yielded signi... This study compared two learning strategies (word-part method and context-clue method) for Chinese EFL learners' vocabulary acquisition and retention. The results revealed that the context-clue group yielded significantly higher scores on the immediate posttests than the word-part group. The context-clue group outperformed on the immediate and delayed fill-in-the-blank posttests than the word-part group. As regards gender effects, no overall differences were found between male and female students. Additionally, the pretest had positive effects on two posttests for the female students, but negative effects for the male students. In educational settings, the context-clue method is highly suggested for explicit vocabulary instruction. 展开更多

Mainstream research at the time highlighted the inherent rationality of a "low center of gravity" and multiple sour... In the 1980s and 1990s, China was an important part of the worldwide decentralization of education. Mainstream research at the time highlighted the inherent rationality of a "low center of gravity" and multiple sources of educational funding and stressed decentralization as an irreversible trend. Since 2001, however, China has readjusted its system of administration of rural compulsory education. Our empirical analysis suggests that this reform is not an extension and refinement of the previous decentralization reform; rather, it represents a renewed effort to reestablish government responsibility for compulsory education. The 200t reform has led to a rapid increase in government investment in education and a considerable improvement in educational equity, especially in primary education. It therefore provides not just a valuable reference for educational reform around the world, but also an opportunity to reflect upon a series of propositions and assumptions in mainstream research. 展开更多

Since the turn of the century, higher education policy in China has highlighted the importance of cultivating students' intercultural competences, particularly in the context of English language teaching. In spite of this, studies show that to this day Chinese ELT classrooms in higher education have rarely taken a cultural turn and teachers' understanding of interculturalism remains insufficient. This paper reports an action research study on how intercultural awareness was developed in the context of an English reading course at an independent college of a major Chinese university. The study followed a teaching flow that integrates intercultural learning with critical thinking by challenging students to select, analyze, and raise questions about English texts on aspects of Chinese culture. Mapping the outputs of a cohort of 77 second-year undergraduate students onto Baker's (2012; 2015) model of intercultural awareness, the study shows that a majority of participants demonstrated a level beyond basic awareness. The paper concludes that reading courses can be used to help foster intercultural awareness among Chinese students, and it offers some pedagogical and theoretical reflections on integrating intercultural learning with ELT, and formulates a number of suggestions for further studies. 展开更多

In this process, narration in drama has undergone a series of transformations in terms of significance, appeal and functionality. It has turned, from a suppressed intrusion into dramatic verisimilitude, to a subordinate attendant on plays of reason and passion and then to an epic element in a modernistic turn, and has contemporarily come onto central stage and assumed a particular theatricality of its own. Such an evolving framework corresponds to philosophical and aesthetical developments over time and integrates into an ever-renewing semiotics of drama. Recent developments in Narratology of the theatre provide an inspiring context for understanding this evolution, as they shed light on the generic nature, communi- cational facets and discursive power of dramatic narratives. 展开更多
