Intronic deletions in the WNK1 gene result in i...The WNK kinases are a recently discovered family of serine-threonine kinases that have been shown to play an essential role in the regulation of electrolyte homeostasis. Intronic deletions in the WNK1 gene result in its overexpression and lead to pseudohypoaldosteronism type II, a disease with salt-sensitive hypertension and hyperkalemia. This review focuses on the recent evidence elucidating the structure of the kinase domain of WNK1 and functions of these kinases in normal and disease physiology. Their functions have implications for understanding the biochemical mechanism that could lead to the retention or insertion of proteins in the plasma membrane. To determine the interdependence of intracranial pressure(ICP) and intraocular pressure(IOP) and how it affects optic nerve pressures, eight normal dogs were examined using pressure-sensing probes implanted into the l...To determine the interdependence of intracranial pressure(ICP) and intraocular pressure(IOP) and how it affects optic nerve pressures, eight normal dogs were examined using pressure-sensing probes implanted into the left ventricle, lumbar cistern, optic nerve subarachnoid space in the left eye, and anterior chamber in the left eye. This allowed ICP, lumbar cistern pressure(LCP), optic nerve subarachnoid space pressure(ONSP) and IOP to be simultaneously recorded. After establishing baseline pressure levels, pressure changes that resulted from lowering ICP(via shunting cerebrospinal fluid(CSF) from the ventricle) were recorded. At baseline, all examined pressures were different(ICP>LCP>ONSP), but correlated(P<0.001). As ICP was lowered during CSF shunting, IOP also dropped in a parallel time course so that the trans-lamina cribrosa gradient(TLPG) remained stable(ICP-IOP dependent zone). However, once ICP fell below a critical breakpoint, ICP and IOP became uncoupled and TLPG changed as ICP declined(ICP-IOP independent zone). The optic nerve pressure gradient(ONPG) and trans-optic nerve pressure gradient(TOPG) increased linearly as ICP decreased through both the ICP-IOP dependent and independent zones. We conclude that ICP and IOP are coupled in a specific pressure range, but when ICP drops below a critical point, IOP and ICP become uncoupled and TLPG increases. When ICP drops, a rise in the ONPG and TOPG creates more pressure and reduces CSF flow around the optic nerve. This change may play a role in the development and progression of various ophthalmic and neurological diseases, including glaucoma.展开更多
The irrigated areas in the northern region of China are important food production areas. Therefore, studies on the variability of the carbon balance in these agro-ecosystems are fundamental for the management of carbo...The irrigated areas in the northern region of China are important food production areas. Therefore, studies on the variability of the carbon balance in these agro-ecosystems are fundamental for the management of carbon sequestration. This paper simulated the long-term variability of the carbon balance in a typical irrigated area along the lower Yellow River from 1984 to 2006, using a process-based ecosystem model called the Simple Biosphere Model, version 2. The mean annual gross primary production (GPP), mean annual net assimilation rate (NAR), mean annual soil respiration (Rs ), and mean annual net ecosystem exchange (NEE) were 1733, 1642, 1304, and 338g C m-2 a-1 , respectively. A significant increasing trend in the seasonal total NAR during the wheat growing season, and a significant decreasing trend in the seasonal total NAR during the maize growing season were detected. However, no significant trend was found in the annual NAR, R s , and NEE. The average carbon sequestration was 1.93 Tg C a-1 when the grain harvest was not taken into account, and the carbon sequestration amount during the maize season was higher than that during the wheat season. However, the agro-ecosystem was a weak carbon source with a value of 0.23 Tg C a-1 , when the carbon in the grain was assumed emitted into the atmosphere.展开更多
Water-sediment regulation of the Yellow River is to regulate and control the flow and sediment transport relationship of the lower reaches through reservoirs on the main streams and tributaries to create balance betwe...Water-sediment regulation of the Yellow River is to regulate and control the flow and sediment transport relationship of the lower reaches through reservoirs on the main streams and tributaries to create balance between water and sediment so that sediment transport capacity of the downstream channels can be maximized,shrinking of channels be contained,and medium flood channel be restored and maintained.Many years' research by the Yellow River Conservancy Commission(YRCC) reveals the water and sediment transport relationship that will prevent sedimentation at the downstream river channels.Based on this relationship and coming sediment and water conditions in the Yellow River basin,the YRCC,with maximized use of reservoirs on the main streams and tributaries,has developed three models of water-sediment regulation:single Xiaolangdi Reservoir-dominated regulation,space scale water-sediment match,and mainstream reservoirs joint operation.Ten water-sediment regulations based on these three models have resulted in an average drop of 1.5 m in the main channel of the downstream 800 km river and an increase of carrying capacity from 1800 to 4000 m3/s.Besides,the wetland ecosystems of estuarine delta has also been improved and restored significantly.展开更多
