Arsenic contamination of groundwater is an emerging issue in Mekong Basin including Cambodia, Vietnam, and Thailand. In Thailand, information about arsenic contamination in drinking water resources are quite rare due to that arsenic is not the main element in water qualification assay. The objective of this study is to determine groundwater quality and arsenic contamination in rural Mekong Basin, Ubon Ratchathani. Groundwater samples were collected from 20 different sampling points, between August 2009 and February 2010 in Amphoe Khemmarat, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand. Physical and chemical characteristics of groundwater were determined. It was observed that the groundwater was 27.9-30.3 ~C, pH 5.7-6.9. The conductivity was 707-767 p.S.cm". Dissolved oxygen was 2.04-5.12 mg.L-1 and TDS was 352-384 mg.L~. The samples showed soft- to very hardness-water properties. In some area, few parameters like CI, Fe, Mn, and As exceeded the WHO guideline limits. This result represents basic information for quality of groundwater and the arsenic contamination in rural Mekong Basin, Ubon Ratchathani. Thus, it is probably useful for arsenic standard level assignment and public health authorities. Rice productivity depends greatly on sufficient water to meet evaporative demand and soil moisture. It is certain thalL rice, the most important crop of Thailand and Vietnam, is vulnerable to climate change. This paper proposes an analysis on the impact of climate on rice water requirement and food security in Thailand and Vietnam. Water demand, yield and production of rice were computed under the changed surface air temperature for three time slices, namely 2020s, 2050s and 2080s. Food security was analyzed from rice supply (calculated milled-rice product, rice stock, and imports) and demand (domestic uses from population growth, exports to world market, domestic seed and other uses). The result showed that, under the higher surface air temperature scenario, water requirement office in Thailand and Vietnam could increase by 1.8 times in the end of the 21 st century. Production of rice dropped by declined yield. Thailand and Vietnam which is the world largest rice exporter in last decades will face the rice shortage in 2080s and 2030s respectively.展开更多

In this study, a paleomagnetic investigation was carried out on the Late Cretaceous volcanic rocks (-88 Ma) of the Shimaoshan Group in Yongtai County, Fujian Province. Rock magnetic experiments showed that magnetite in pseudo-single-domain and multi-domain grain and hematite were predominant magnetic phases. Stepwise thermal demagnetization successfully isolated characteristic directional components at high-temperature interval (〉 500℃) from 383 specimens in 19 sites, which yielded a paleomagnetic pole for the studied section at 83.1°N, 152.6°E (N = 19, A95 = 3.9°), and the scatter SB = 9.0. The Fisher distri- bution of virtual geomagnetic poles (VGPs) and the consistence of S8 with the expected value at the 95% confidence level in- dicate that the yielded paleomagnetic pole is free of paleomagnetic secular variation influence. The new pole, which is well consistent with that from the Eurasian apparent polar wander path (APWP) curve, suggests no obvious southward movement of the sampling site during the Cretaceous.展开更多
