Support is found for the basic tenet of cultivation theory, namely, that media use shapes people's perceptions and beliefs. Print media use predicts one's worldview, both of which predict attitudes toward science. By examining attitudes toward science before television became a dominant medium, this study extends the theory beyond the field's primary research focus on the relationship between television and violence.展开更多

The research delineates the term thesaurus and its connection with the formation of youth's outlook. The central focus of the research is social and cultural value orientations of the young Russian. The study presents a detailed analysis of impact that mass media plays in socialization of youth, its generations, its influence on public opinion formation and priority directions of national policy of regulation of mutual relations between youth and mass media. It attempts to examine the presence of mass media in youth's everyday life. The research provides a detailed analysis of contemporary state of the youth's trust to the mass media and degree of dependence on it. The study also presents a detailed analysis of the traces of mass media's influence on young Russians. The completed research is fundamental for the sociological and the philosophical generalisations that underline comparative research on the youth problems in Russia, its social and cultural value orientations and the influence on public opinion formation and priority directions of national policy of regulation of mutual relations between youth and mass media.展开更多

The Uprising shows that the war was not a simple fight of good against evil (as it often perceived in Western Europe) but that in fact three sides, each with different goals, were involved--two totalitarian systems and the world of Western democracies. Memory is a phenomenon that is directly related to the present; our perception of the past is always influenced by the present. The aim of the author's presentation is to examine how the collective memory of Polish people about the Warsaw Rising was changing. The author would argue that the remembrance of this event is situated between the communicative memory and cultural memory. To prove it, the author will examine two movies: Sewer (1956) by Andrzej Wajda, Eroica (1956) by Andrzej Munk, and the narrative exhibition of the Warsaw Rising Museum.展开更多

However, as China is one of initiated countries of the BRIC nations, domestic mainstream media witnessed widespread coverage to justify Bank's roles. Therefore, this paper, based on Halliday's Meta-language Function theory, intends to explore the significance of BRIC Banks from the perspective of domestic mainstream media. Meanwhile, the thesis, combining with corpus research tools and VRIN standard theory (namely Valuable, Rare, Imperfectly, Imitable, Non-Substitutable), probes into image construction and interprets roles of BRIC Bank in mainstream reports.展开更多

In fact, reading and writing are no longer limited exclusively to books, rather they are associated with diversified digital media integrating text, sound, image, and video. In this context, we developed an exploratory study in a kindergarten with the children and their family members. Data were collected through participant observation, children conversational interviews, and digital narratives produced by children. Data analysis is based on content analysis with NVivo software support. The emergence of literacy is evident in verbal interactions in peer-group work, in contact with the written text, in "writing" in various media, and in sharing knowledge, discoveries, and digital narratives produced in an online community (http://janelajardim.ning.com). This paper presents: (1) a systematic literature review in the field of digital narrative and emergent literacy; (2) the description of children's activities concerning interactive multimodal narrative; (3) the results of this work; and (4) the conclusion about contribution of multimodal narratives to the emergence of reading, writing, and digital skills展开更多

In "neutrosophy" of renowed American professor F. Smarandache's terms, the interwar period was, in Romania, a "neutral" period. As mediating operators, professional journals reflected the atmosphere of relative tranquility and social peace. From the qualitative analysis of their media discourse, we can see three elements that: (1) the professional journals of Oltenia, as media tools for teachers, priests and folklore (folklorist), or music enthusiasts (music lovers), were loyal to their financial supporters; (2) although they served oblique and opposition interests, the communication professional operators have generally not emphasized, perpetuated or generated conflicts, disputes and misunderstandings; and (3) social attitudes promoted by professional magazines in Oltenia was a beneficial, objective one of better understanding and neutrality. The conclusion is that, despite the axiom that progress is generated by contradiction, it shows that professional journals in Oltenia, during 1920-1939, even in the absence of contradictions, namely under neutrality, there have been major advances.展开更多

He has become a global publishing phenomenon: His books have been translated worldwide, film adaptations of his novels have been produced, and the author is the subject of a million-euro publishing deals and successive media scandals in France. The novels depict surprising forms of imaginary resources, a radiating end of the world, a post-nuclear anxiety, and depressive characters. Houellebecq shocks us leaving us in a world where the feelings of love, tenderness and goodwill have disappeared. The purpose of Houellebecq's novels is to alert about the real problems of the human society in the twenty-first century. Indeed, in the books we can easily recognize the essential features of contemporary society and the fact that the individual assumes a dehumanization process in which one has to cope with his solitude in a world of emptiness. This socio-cultural dimension is indeed the background of Houellebecq's novels, novels in which the protagonists seem to be wedged in a mechanism from which it is difficult to escape: reification and dehumanization on the one hand, "robotization" of love on the other. This article focuses on the analysis of the texts revealing the poignant characteristics of"L'Ere du vide" ("The Era of Emptiness") as described by Gilles Lipovetsky: Loneliness, the lack of love and its replacement by sexual relations.展开更多

The strain incorporated two segments of the genome of porcine origin and was officially designated as A/CaliforniaJ4/2009/H1N1. In June 2009, alarmed by the infection's progress, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the "level six" of the geographical progression scale for epidemics and kept it at that level until August of the following year. The Portuguese media activated the public health alarm and integrated it into its agenda, but the volume and severity indicators of the news coverage did not correspond to the epidemiological indicators of progression. This paper describes how two narratives with different rhythms for the swine flu pandemic de facto emerged.展开更多
