We found that with increasing altitude, the GW potential energy (Ep) values in the stratosphere caused by convection decreases. The importance of GWs that are stimulated by topography is enhanced in this area. In the TP, which was considered to lack strong topographical GW activity, clear activity existed in the spring and winter of all studied years. Based on the latitudinal zone of the TP, the distribution of GW potential energy is highly consistent with the elevation of the local topography. The activities of topographical GWs are strongly filtered as they propagate upward to the area of zero speed wind. The analysis indicates that in the TP, clear orographic GW excitation exists and propagates upward to the upper stratosphere, where it is greatly influenced by the wind.展开更多

The impacts of lattice parameters on the diffracted transmission are calculated in the ranges for lattice pitch from 100 nm to 2000 nm, fill factor from 0.1 to 0.9 and grat- ing height from 100 nm to 1000 rim, respectively. Our simulation results confirm that the lattice pitch is the dominant factor of the diffraction. It determines how many orders of diffraction occur by the 2PhCs. The larger the lattice pitch, the higher the diffraction orders come into play. Moreover, besides the first-order Bragg diffraction, higher diffraction orders from large pitches of PhCs are also beneficial to the light extraction improvement. The higher enhancement factors of the integrated transmission were obtained from a wide range of pitches with micro-scale GaN 2PhCs. Three different diffraction mechanisms through wave vector analysis were used to discuss the simulation results.展开更多

This filter has great potential for real-life applications, especially as bio- and environmental sensors. The structure of the proposed sensor is compact, and all of its layers can be grown in a single process. In this paper, we present results on the design of a water pollution sensor in the violet region of the visible spectrum. The spectral and angular sensitivities of the sensor for both the transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization modes were estimated and compared for various regions in the violet spectrum. A spectral response characterized with a narrow bandwidth and low reflection side bands was realized by carrying out extensive parameter search and optimization. Optimal spectral and angular sensitivities were found for the sensor with a grating thickness of 100nm in the TM polarized mode where we found them to be 100nm and 40 degrees, per index refraction unit, respectively.展开更多

The device consists of metal gate, anU-refleetlon coatings, liquid crystal and mirror. By changing the refractive index of liquid crystal in the interface between the metal gate and the mirror, the phase difference between two beams with orthogonal polarization is varied and a continuous phase sliift is achieved. The phase shift of the device is calculated by using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, and the transmittance and reflectance are calculated by using the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method. The results reveal that the structure can realize continuously tunable phase shift for THz wave at 1 THz.展开更多

The strong light diffraction effect is achieved by applying a proper external voltage. We can observe reversed domain pattern and employ the detected diffraction intensity to optimally fit the result of RCWA based on least square method. Compared with conventional scalar diffraction theory, more accurate domain structure parameters with accuracies of 0.05 μm and 0.005 for the period and duty cycle are obtained respectively. It is proved that accurate, real-time and nondestructive characterization can be realized via this method.展开更多

In this contribution, three retracking methods (threshold, improved threshold and Beta-5) are investigated with the aim of improving the altimeter data over a shallow water area. Comparison indicates that the improved threshold is the best retracking method over China Sea. Two ocean tide models, NAO99b and CSR4.0, are analyzed. Results show that different tide models used in the processing of altimeter data may result in differences more than 10 mGal in recovered coastal gravity anomalies. Also, NAO99b is more suitable than CSR4.0 over the shallow water area of China Sea. Finally, gravity anomalies over China Sea are calculated from retracked Geosat/GM and ERS-1/GM data by least squares collocation. Comparison with shipborne gravimetry data demonstrates that gravity anomalies from retracked data are significantly superior to those from non-retracked data. Our results have the same order as the other two altimeter-derived gravity models: Sandwell&Smith(V16) and DNSC08.展开更多
