Recently some methods of exploratory spatial data analysis such as spatial autocorrelation have provided effective tools to analyze spatial agglomeration and cluster, which can reveal the pattern of regional inequality. This article attempts to use spatial autocorrelation at county level to get refined spatial pattern of regional disparity in Chinese northeast economic region over 2000-2006 (2001 absent). The result indicates that the basic trend of regional economy is an increasing concentration of growth among counties in northeast economic region, and there are two geographical clusters of poorer counties including the counties in western Liaoning Province and adjacent counties in Inner Mongolia, poorer counties of Heihe, Qiqihar and Suihua in Heilongjiang Province. This article also reveals that we can use the methods of exploratory spatial data analysis as the supplementary analysis methods in regional economic analysis.展开更多

In this paper, the impact of urban agglomeration on labor productivity is explored by making comparisons among these four cities. The model used for analysis is a classical model derived from previous studies. Some indicators, such as population density and economic density, were selected to examine the impact of urban agglomeration on the labor productivity based on the time-series data for the four cities from 1990 to 2007. The four main conclusions are: l) The promotion from the growth rate of population density on the growth rate of labor productivity is limited. 2) The negative relationship exists between the growth rate of employment density and the growth rate of labor productivity. 3) Agglomeration effect exists in the four cities, the highest one is Dalian, Shenyang takes the second place, followed by Changchun and Harbin, and the predominant promotion exerted on the labor productivity is the output density.展开更多

Nineteen resource-based cities in Northeast China were analyzed using the indicator system. The results showed that Liaoning and Jilin provinces had higher economic resilience than Heilongjiang Province. Panjin, Benxi, and Anshan in Liaoning Province were the top three cities, while Shuangyashan and other coal-based cities in Heilongjiang Province ranked last. Metals-and petroleum-based cities had significantly higher resilience than coal-based cities. The differences in persistence, adaptability, transformation, and resilience among resource-based cities decreased since the introduction of the Northeast Revitalization Strategy in 2003. Forestry-based cities improved the most in terms of resilience, followed by metals-based and multiple-resource cities; however, resilience dropped for coal-based cities, and petroleum-based cities falling the most. The findings illustrate the importance and the way to develop a differentiated approach to improve resilience among resource-based cities.展开更多

The distribution and recession rates of knickpoints contain information that provides a fundamental understanding of geomorphic processes. In the Yalu River-Wangtian'e volcanic region of northeastern China, broadly distributed fiat lava terrain provides an ideal site to study the recession of fluvial knickpoints because knickpoints and waterfalls are well preserved here. Here we describe the distribution of knickpoints in the Yalu River-Wangtian'e volcanic region by combining DEM analysis and numerical modeling Furthermore, we present a knickpoint celerity model, derived from stream-power incision model, to relate knickpoint recession rate to drainage area. We calibrate important empirical coefficients with our knickpoint celerity model; the best fit erosion coefficient (K) is 1.32×10^-8, and the best fit drainage area exponent (m) is 0.69. Error analysis indicates a close correspondence between synthetic and real knickpoints. Finally, we show that knickpoint recession rates in the Yalu River-Wangtian'e volcanic region are -1-10 mm/a during the early stages of transient incision, and that the present rates are -1-6 mm/a. Our recession rate results are in good agreement with previous findings from the Aso Volcano and volcanoes near Boso Peninsula (Japan), which have a similar geologic history to the Yalu River-Wangtian'e volcanic region. Our present effort provides new insight into landscape evolution in the Yalu River-Wangtian'e volcanic region in northeastern China.展开更多
New moves seek to spur economic vigor The sluggish economic performance of the northeastern region in the first three quarters of 2016 has once again sounded alarms for the Chinese Government.
